NAAC report of Shirpur Education Societys HR Patel Arts, Science and Commerce Mahila Mahavidyalaya

SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
The Shirpur Education Societys HR Patel Arts, Science and Commerce Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Shirpur, Maharashtra, a registered public Trust and multidimensional educational organization has established Smt. Hemantben Rasiklal Patel Arts Mahila College at Shirpur in Maharashtra in July 1990 with an aim to give educational opportunities to the Women of Shirpur and surrounding rural area. The goal of the institution is 'SA VIDYA VIMUKTAYA'

The college volunteered to be assessed by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and submitted the self-study report to NAAC in September 2003. A peer team was constituted by the Council to visit the institution and validate the self study report. The peer team consists of Prof. Bharat C. Chhaparwal Former Vice-Chancellor, Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalaya, Indore (M.P) as chairperson, Dr. D. M. Basavaraja, Professor of Commerce, Acharya Tulsi National College of Commerce, Shimoga (Karnataka) as member and Sri. B.Raghavendra Rao, Former Principal, Hindu College, Guntur (A.P) as member Co-ordinator. The peer team visited the college on 7th and 8th July 2004.

The college is affiliated to North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon. It is a grant-in-aid mahila college. The college offers undergraduate courses in Arts and self finance course in computer knowledge and application. It also started during 2003-2004, Post graduate course in M.A (English) on self financing basis. The college has 11 departments in Arts and runs 12 programmes. The U.G.C has given recognition to the college under 2 (f) in April 2003. But the college has not yet obtained recognition under 12 (B).

There are 12 permanent, 2 part time and 3 C.H.B teachers. Four teachers are qualified in SLET, one qualified in NET. Two teachers are Ph. D. holders and two are M. Phil. Holders, one registered for D.Litt. and three for Ph.D. There are eight administrative staff in the college. The college is located in a rural region in an area of 4.30 acres. There were 365 U.G students and 22 P.G students during 2003-04. The success rates in U.G classes during 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 were 60% and 45% respectively. The drop rates are small during those years. The unit cost of education including salary for the year 2003 - 2004 was Rs:8800/- and excluding salary component during the same year was Rs: 1185/-

The college has Central library, Computer Centre, Badminton Hall with wooden floor, canteen, Sports facilities and non-resident centre. It shares facilities like assembly hall, gymkhana, play ground, LCD with sister institutions. The peer team carefully analysed the self study report submitted by the college. The team went through all the relevant documents and visited the various departments, supporting services and the facilities. It also interacted at length with the Principal, Governing body, teaching staff, non-teaching staff, students, parents and alumni of the college. Based on the above visit and taking into consideration the various criteria identified by NAAC, the commendable features of the college as well as the issues of concern are given hereunder.

SECTION 2: CRITERION -WISE ANALYSIS
CRITERION I : CURRICULAR ASPECTS
Smt. Hemantben Rasiklal Patel Arts Mahila College, Shirpur follows the syllabi prescribed by North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon. The college follows the annual examination pattern for all the programmes. The college has 12 departments in Arts and Computer application. It is offering courses in English, Marathi, Hindi, Geography, History, Defence studies, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, education for the Arts students. It also has started self financing computer knowledge and application course for B.A students from the academic year 2002-2003 and P.G. course in English from June 2003 on permanent non-grant basis. The college offers for B.A students English, Marathi, Hindi, History, Geography and Defence studies at special level. All the courses offered are career oriented. The duration of the programme is fixed by the concerned university. It has no flexibility in time frame. The college can introduce any new programme within an year. A number of guest lectures are arranged for the benefit of the students. Y.C.M Open University, Nasik has a study centre in the college for the boys and girls who are not able to attend the regular college.

CRITERION II : TEACHING - LEARNING AND EVALUATION
The admissions for the three year degree course B.A are made in accordance with North Maharashtra University norms. The admissions to the B. C. students are given according to reservation policies. The admissions are given on first come first served basis. The college does not hold any remedial classes for academically backward students. But the teachers hold extra classes for weak students. The advanced learners are provided textbooks free of cost. The teachers submit their teaching plans for the two terms. They follow the plan and complete the syllabus accordingly.

The college examination committee conducts unit tests at the end of each term. Two tutorials in the first term and two in the second term are also held. The university conducts the annual examination. The students are assessed through the unit tests, tutorials and annual examinations.

The recruitment of the teachers is made as per rules and regulations of U.G.C, North Maharashtra University and Govt. of Maharashtra. The candidates are selected through selection committee. The college can make temporary appointments of teachers on temporary basis for six months. The college working days were 235 and teaching days were 180 during 2003-04.

The teachers performance is evaluated through self-appraisal and meetings. The feedback is collected from students about teacher's performance. Several teachers attended refresher/orientation courses to update their knowledge. During the last two years nine teachers attended orientation programmes and eight teachers attended seminars. The teachers are also encouraged to attend workshops/conferences. Monthly tutorial system and seminars of students are introduced from the academic year 2002-2003. A number of eminent people in their own fields are invited to give lectures in the college. The classroom teaching is supplemented by O.H.P. sometimes.
