Law college waits for principal

Chennai Law College, which is highly short-staffed, has been waiting for a principal for quite some time now.

It may be noted that the Madras high court recently set aside the orders of the state government appointing Balaji Naidu as principal of Dr Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai.

Several positions in teaching and non-teaching departments are vacant for several months and if the situation continues, it may have a serious impact on the academics of the law college students, admitted government sources.

The vacant positions have to be filled at the earliest and a request will be made to the state government, D. Selvam, chairman, Bar Council of Tamil Nadu, said.

According to law university syndicate member R.S. Bharathi, there are several vacancies to be filled at government law institutions in the state and the issue has been taken up with the vice-chancellor and other legal authorities.

Dr V. Vijayakumar, vice chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, meanwhile said the government had taken effective steps to fill the existing vacancies.through directorate of legal studies.
When contacted, M. Mohammad Iqbal, director of legal studies, said, The selection interviews for lecturers are underway and soon the vacancies will be filled. Regarding the position of the high court order on principal, he said the orders were yet to be received and the government would take subsequent action.
