Profile of Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya

profile
The Institution was founded on March 4, 1902 by Swami Shraddhanand (1856-1926), a member of the Arya Samaj, with the sole aim of reviving the ancient Hindu educational system of residential schools or gurukuls imparting esoteric knowledge under the direct guidance of a guru or adept as an alternative to the Western-oriented system of Education imposed on India by Lord Macaulay. The impetus for the foundation was found in the teachings and activities of Dayananda Saraswati, founder of the Arya Samaj. The original campus situated on the banks of River Ganga, at Kangri village, Bijnor district, was flooded when the river changed course in 1924, the new (present) campus was built subsequently.

The campus has also been visited by British Trade Union leader Charles Freer Andrews and British Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald , to study the unique Gurukul based education system. Mahatma Gandhi visited the campus three times during his lifetime, and stayed for extended periods of time, most notably during the 1915 Kumbh mela, followed by a visit in 1916, when on March 20, he spoke at Gurukul Anniversary. In 1917, Swami Shraddhanand, till now know as Mahatma Munshiram took sanyas, left Gurukul to jump full fleged into Hindu reform movement and Indian Independence movement. In 1962, it was accorded a Deemed University Status by University Grants Commission.

In 1922, a sister-institution, the Kanya Gurukul Mahavidyalaya, was founded at Dehradun to cater to the needs of girls, which shifted to its new campus alongside the Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar in 1993.

Its Archaeological Museum , (estb. 1945) houses some rare statues, coins, paintings, manuscripts and artefacts, starting from Harappa culture (c.2500-1500 BC). The institution now is legally styled as a Mahavidyalaya (university) rather than a Vidyalaya (school). The present Vice-Chancellor of the university, is Prof. Swatantra Kumar.

Among its noted alumni is the late Rama P. Coomaraswamy, third son of the Indologist Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy

Vice-Chancellors Messages
Prof. Swatantra Kumar
At a time when the spell of Western system of education was at its strongest in India and the educated people were discarding the ideal and values of their own ancient heritage, Mahatama Munshi Ram, who later achieved immortality as Swami Shradhanand, established Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidhalya in 1902 to introduce a synthesis of the best of the ancient and modern scientific education. Still today this premier institute is engaged in educational experiments and innovations to make education meaningful and fruitful in the present context.

Moving towards its aim, Vishwavidyalaya launched its website on May 7,2004 so that not only the family of Gurukula can know about the Vedic Culture, Traditions, Modern Information Technology and Management but also the whole world.

DR RAM AVTAR SHARMA Versus SUBHASH SHARMA AND OTHERS Criminal Misc. No.36380-M of 2007

IN THE HIGH COURT OF PUNJAB AND HARYANA AT CHANDIGARH

Dr. Ram Avtar Sharma … Petitioner
Versus
Subhash Sharma and others … Respondents

CORAM: HONBLE MR. JUSTICE KANWALJIT SINGH AHLUWALIA
Present:
Mr. B.M. Singh, Advocate for the petitioner.
Ms. Alka Chatrath, Advocate for respondent No.1.
None for respondents No.2 and 3.

KANWALJIT SINGH AHLUWALIA, J. (ORAL)
This is a case where the academicians, instead of devoting their time in the class-rooms and rearing good students, are in litigation over a very frivolous issue. Grievance of the petitioner is that he had obtained a degree of Ph.D. from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidalaya, Haridwar, which was equivalent to the degree of Ph.D. in Hindi. Respondent No.1-Principal of the, where the petitioner was Head of the Department of DAV College Hindi, entertained some doubt regarding the degree of Ph.D. obtained by the petitioner being equivalent to the degree of Ph.D. in Hindi. However, respondent No.1 has retired. Both, the petitioner and respondent No.1, intend to bury their old hatchet in a graceful manner. Counsel for the petitioner states that in case his Principal respondent No.1 admits that as on today he has no doubt that the Ph.D.degree obtained by the petitioner is equivalent to the degree of Ph.D. in Hindi, he, in the spirit of forget and forgive, will forgo this litigation. After going through the contents of the pleadings made in the present petition, counsel for respondent No.1 states that the Ph.D. degree obtained by the petitioner is equivalent to the degree of Ph.D. in Hindi. Counsel for the petitioner accepts the statement made by counsel for respondent No.1. In view of this, nothing survives in the present petition and the same stands disposed of.

[KANWALJIT SINGH AHLUWALIA]
JUDGE
