Dalit icon Mayawati becomes focus of scholars research

Deoria (Uttar Pradesh): Apart from being an icon for millions of Indias Dalits, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has now also become a topic of research for doctorate in philosophy (PhD).Nagendra Kumar, 31, a teacher at a college here, has completed his PhD that was centred on Mayawati.It took me over three years to complete my research work, Nagendra Kumar, who has been awarded the PhD for his research on Role of Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh politics, told reporters Monday in Deoria, some 350 km from Lucknow.The teacher, who prefers not to share information about his research work, said: I can only tell you that my research work that runs into 881 pages covers most of the aspects of Mayawatis life.A major part of my work concentrates on the meteoric rise of Mayawati due to her much-talked about social engineering that helped her regain power in 2007, and that too with an absolute majority, he said.

In the research I have tried to focus on Mayawatis strategy for not limiting herself as a leader of the Dalits… By her social remix that involved Brahmins and others from upper castes, she managed to project herself as a leader of the masses, said the teacher.

Nagendra Kumar, who teaches civics in Deorias Krishi Inter College, has completed his PhD from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University in Gorakhpur. He was awarded the PhD in the first week of this month.For his research work, the teacher, who himself is a Dalit, tried his best to meet Mayawati but could not.I came to Lucknow three times with the desire of meeting the chief minister… I even had a questionnaire ready every time. But, citing her (Mayawatis) hectic schedule, the officials did not allow me to meet the chief minister.Several leaders and ministers of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government led by Mayawati helped Nagendra Kumar by providing him information that he required.I will not name the ministers, but its true that they helped me a lot in my research work… Through them I came to know many interesting facts about Mayawati, he said.

About University

The University of Gorakhpur is a teaching and residential-cum-affiliating University. It is situated at a distance of about 2 kilometers form the downtown to the east and almost walking distance from railway station to the south. Although the idea of residential University at Gorakhpur was first mooted by Dr. C.J. Chako, the then Principal of St. Andrews College, then under Agra University, who initiated post-graduate and undergraduate science teaching in his college, the idea got crystallized and took concrete shape by the untiring efforts of Late Pt. S.N.M. Tripathi. The proposal was accepted in principle by the first Chief Minister of U.P., Late Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant, but it was only in 1965 that the University came into existence by an act passed by the U.P. Legislature. It actually started functioning since September 1, 1957, when the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law and Education were started. In the following year, 1958, the faculty of science came into being. Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Agriculture came into existence in later years. Late Mahant Digvijay Nath also made valuable contribution in the formation of the University. At one stage the federal jurisdiction of the University was spread over colleges in Gorakhpur and the adjoining erstwhile twelve districts with about 125 affiliated colleges. In 1973, when the Gorakhpur University Act was replaced by uniform piece of legislation called the U.P. Universities Act, about two dozed colleges located in five districts were transferred to the newly created Avadh University with headquarters at Faizabad. The jurisdiction of the Gorakhpur University was drastically curtailed further in its headquarters at Jaunpur. At present, with the establishment of new colleges and the creation of new districts, there are 123 colleges located in five districts of Gorakhpur Division.

In the beginning the University had its own teething troubles. But due to the zeal, untiring efforts and foresight of its founding fathers and the then faculty members, it has come of age having completed more than forty years of a most meaningful existence. It now has neat and attractive campus spread over an area of about 300 acres with well-planned teaching and residential campuses. In the beginning the University was housed in two buildings the Pant Block (inaugurated by late Pt. Pant) and the Majithia Block (named after Sir Surendra Singh Majithia, who made a significant donation to the building through his family trust). Several other buildings came up during the following decades : they include the Central Library, the Arts Block, the Administrative Block, the Law Faculty, a Student's Union building, a Gymnasium hall, a Health Centre, a Computer Centre and Research Buildings for Chemistry, Zoology, and Botany. Besides, there are separated Buildings for Commerce and Education Faculties and also for Home, Science, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Hindi, Ancient History, Fine Arts and Music, Political Science and Adult Education. A huge building comprising several big rooms besides and imposing auditorium, referred to as Deeksha Bhavan, presently houses the separate girls' wing for the undergraduate classes along with its use as an examination centre. Two separate building housing a branch of Allahabad Bank and a sub-Post Office are also part of the University. Samajiki Manviki Bhawan - was built about seven years ago. Besides the general maintenance and repair work, and the general beautification of the campus on a large scale, some hectic construction activities are also currently going on in the University. Buildings of Department of Business Management and of Biotechnology have been constructed. Additional lecture halls have been added in the Arts Faculty Building.

In the residential zone, we have more than 125 quarters for teachers and officials of the University and about the same number of the non-teaching staff. There are several hostels - four boys and one complex with three wings for the girls' - which have facilities of reading-cum-TV room, games, etc. The students living in the city are attached to the Delegacy which looks after their interests and provides facilities to them in extra-curricular activities.

The academic culture of the University evolved out the cross fertilization of diverse traditions of teaching and research. The seniors who gave a start to the institution came from varying University backgrounds. What has thus been delivered to us is a most liberal tradition of academic pursuit, a tradition rich in content and intellectual stimulating. True to our motto, we have always believed in the free quest of knowledge and have consistently refused to live under anything like an inbred orthodoxy. Among the illustrious faculty members who distinguished themselves in their own fields were elevated as Vice Chancellor and served more than once are.

We feel proud to mention that Prof. Hiralal Singh ,Dr. G. Rasul, Prof. R.P. Bahadur, Prof. H.S. Srivastava, Prof. R.B. Tiwari, Prof. V. Chatterjee, Prof. K.B. Lal, Prof. U.R. Rai, Prof. L.B. Tripathi, Prof. Kamal, have been the torch-bearers of our University in the earlier days. Prof. Pratap Singh, Prof. N.K. Sanyal and Prof. R.A. Singh and Prof. L.N. Tripathi were offered the prestigious position of the Chairman of U.P. Higher Education Services Commission (Allahabad), which they served with distinction.

Among the present generation of the university teachers there is a distinguished band of scholars many of whom have received national and international recognition. Many of our alumni have also brought laurels to the University in various areas, both in the country and abroad. They are holding important positions in academic, administrative, legal, professional, military and political fields as well as in sports and games. Late V.B. Singh (Ex Chief Minister of U.P) and Late Kalp Nath Rai (Central Minister) were the alumni of this university. Ex Chief Minister of U.P. Sri Raj Nath Singh is also the alumni of the Physics Department of Gorakhpur University.

Besides the conventional courses, the University offers several other courses in Business management, Computer Science, M.Sc. in Electronics, Diplomas in Photography, PG Diploma in Computer Science, diplomas in public administration, labour law, journalism are some of the more prominent ones. A few courses of topical interest where introduced :

Industrial Microbiology (1999), Industrial Chemistry and Home Science at the Under Graduate level, and Biotechnology at the Post Graduate level.

Remedial courses for SC and ST are also being organized. There is also an Employment Guidance Bureau to help and advice students in seeking employment. Study centres of the Indira Gandhi National Open University and of UPRT open University also function in the University and for those who, for one reason or the other, are unable to pursue higher studies in the conventional set up. The university has National Service Schemes besides having the Army, Air and Naval Wings of the N.C.C. Sports activities are organized by the Athletic Association headed by a university teacher who is helped by a team of teachers, students and staff appointed for this purpose. It is doing very well in some of the games and sports. Recently the University has been credited with B++ level by the NAAC team of UGC, New Delhi.

Thus, by any reckoning the performance of the University during the last fifty years has been quite good, justifiable the University community can speak today of its own tradition and its own identity. However, one should not loose sight of the fact that institution building is a difficult and painful exercise and perhaps it is even more difficult to maintain and advance the standards already once achieved. A lot of hard work had to be done by the Founding Society before persuading the Government to bring forward a legislation to establish a University at Gorakhpur. The untiring efforts and the devotion of all those grand men, who mooted the idea of the university and saw through its foundation, bringing higher education within easy reach of millions of people of his region, is gratefully acknowledge.

History

The present form of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University has been attained by the untiring efforts of Dr CJ Chako, the then Principal of St Andrews College. Firstly, it had been established as a college under Agra University with post-graduate and undergraduate science teaching courses in 1957. In the beginning the University was housed in two buildings the Pant Block (inaugurated by late Pt. Pant) and the Majithia Block (named after Sir Surendra Singh Majithia, who made a significant donation to the building through his family trust). Several other buildings came up during the following decades.

Deendayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University was established in 1965 under an act passed by the UP government. An NAAC accredited B++ university, it takes care of the higher education needs of the people of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The academic culture of the University has evolved out the cross fertilization of diverse traditions of teaching and research.

His Excelency Shri. B. L. Joshi
His Excelency born in a small Rajasthan village, Shri B. L. Joshi began his career in 1957 with the police service in Rajasthan and moved to the Govt. of India in 1962. During a long service career, Shri Joshi worked in different administrative positions including in the Ministry of Home Affairs, with Prime Ministers - Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri and Smt. Indira Gandhi, with the High Commissions of India at Islamabad and London, and with the Embassy of India at Washington D.C. He took voluntary retirement from the I.P.S. in 1991 and got involved in social work.

Shri Joshi moved to the United States of America in 1993, where he was Director with two large American Companies and also as Executive Director of an NGO located in California, which awards scholarships to bright and needy students in India. On his return from the U.S. in March 2000, Shri Joshi was appointed as 'Member' of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission, a position equivalent to a High Court Judge, where he worked for four years. He assumed the post of the Lt. Governor of Delhi on 09 June, 2004 and relinquished this responsibility on being appointed the Governor of Meghalaya in April 2007. In October 2007, he was appointed Governor of the State of Uttarakhand. Shri Joshi has travelled< strong> extensively in India and abroad. He takes keen interest in social work and is also associated with several social service groups and agencies.

Research Areas

Department Of Physics
In the beginning research facilities in the field of molecular spectroscopy and the luminescence were developed and a number beginning in the field of semiconductor devices, polymer studies and theoretical studies in the field of exact solutions of Einstein field equations were also carried out. With growing numbers of teaching staff, studies in the field of crystal structure using X-ray techniques, investigations in the field of liquid crystals and biomolecules, experimental studies in solar physics and categorization of stars, studies of stellar matter particularly black holes and galactic clusters were undertaken. A strong group in the field of supersonic conductors, dielectric polarization, absorption and dispersion studies and rare earth oxides were also developed in the mid seventies. Studies in the field of thin-film solar energy conversion devices, Organic semiconductors and currently multilayer and nanostructure materials and devices have been developed.

FOCO Pendulam in Department Of Physics for Astro Physics Research

A group in Biophysics is studying transcription in DNA molecules and junction of these molecules. This group is also carrying out conformal mapping of biomolecules using X-ray techniques and NMR investigations. Another group in the field of Particle Physics is also active and is engaged in collaborative programme with CERN, Germany. Most of the faculty members after having their training in the country have worked in renowned research laboratories and centres of theoretical studies abroad. There are many Humboldt and DAAD fellows, post doctoral fellows is SIDA, Sweden and ICTP, Italy and others have either worked under academic exchange programmes or invitation programmes.

Department Of Mathematics & Statistics
At present research is being done in the field of Theory of Relativity, Differential Geometry, Fluid Dynamics, Special Functions, Summability Theory, Functional Analysis, Differentiable Manifolds, Number Theory, and Graph Theory and in Statistics - Bayesian inference, Life Testing, Reliability Theory Demography etc. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has made great strides. In the last few years the number of students from undergraduate to research level has considerably increased.

The Department of Chemistry, D.D.U. Gorakhpur University, since its inception, has been recognized at the National and International level for its quality teaching & research. Joshi was Reader, Head of the department for a short period (August, 1962 - Sept. 1962) after which Prof. R. P. Rastogi (Oct. 1962 to April 1985) took over the leadership of the department. In subsequent years, the department got the leadership of Late Prof. S.C. Tripathi (April, 1985 to Feb. 1987), Prof. S. Giri (Feb.,1987 to March 1996), Prof. R.R. Yadav (March 1996 to Jan. 1998 ), Prof. Kehar Singh (Jan. 1998 to Sept. 1998), Prof. J. Nath, (Sept. 1998 to March, 1999), Prof. B.L. Dubey (March 1999 to April, 1999), Prof. N. B. Singh (April 1999 to July 2003) , Prof. M. L. Srivastava (july2003 to septemer2007)and currently Prof. K.D.S.Yadav is heading the department.

Educational Streams

Comprehending needs of learners, the university provides appropriate faculty and ample infrastructure to its learners in different area of higher education. Courses are available on different levels with the unique strategy of teaching-learning process. Under Graduate Admission is based on Entrance Test. Reservation is available as per UP State Government norms. The Electronic Data Processing Cell (EDP) helps to implement an efficient and transparent system. The curriculum is updated at regular intervals, keeping it at sync with needs of the modern times.

Facilities
Hostels are provided separately to male and female students. Guest house, Library, Laboratories and workshops are also provided to students. Central Library has large number of books in its stock, thus taking care of the educational needs of the students. Facilities like Gymnasium hall, Health Centre, and Computer Centre add to readiness of the university in providing the students proper infrastructure for education.
