Introduction
Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science & Technology (PRIST) University in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, has invited application for admission into the following program offered in the new academic session 2009.

The PRIST University Thanjavur Tamil Nadu was establishment of Ponnaiyah Ramajayam College in 1994. Since it is Managed by an academician, its Philosophy along with its derivatives - Vision, Mission and Goal were predetermined under the umbrella of quality and discipline. Rest is history. The Prist University a temple of learning disseminating knowledge in a meaningful way to the nook and corner of this country, and shower on everyone the light of wisdom and the gift of knowledge.The Centre for Distance Education has been established to translate the above mentioned factors into reality.
History
Prof.P.Murugesan founded RICST(Ram Institute of Computer Science & Technology) in 1985, way ahead of the IT-wave of the 90's. This pioneering effort in the agricultural district of Thanjavur gained quick recognition by its affiliation to the Bharathidasan University in 1989 for PGDCA course.

This led to the establishment of Ponnaiyah Ramajayam College in 1994. Since it is Managed by an academician, its PHILOSOPHY along with its derivatives - VISION, MISSION and GOAL - were predetermined under the umbrella of QUALITY and DISCIPLINE. Rest is HISTORY.

From the Desk of Founder & Chancellor : I am greatly rejoiced and proudly place on record the fact that Ponnaiyah Ramajayam College has become PRIST - the visionary dream of this humble servent of education-whose little mission, a decade ago to transform a small college into a big one has gradually unfolded into a glorified tangible reality becoming PRIST. This blossoming of PRIST testifies to countless, sleepless nights of contemplation and planning coursing through my pursuit and progress with sweat and labour. "PRIST is my dream come true".

I have always stood in reverence to any kind or form of Education. Education is the manifestation of love and my most cherished possession. Education drives away ignorance and through illumination it emboldens a man to a righteous thought and action. It empowers a woman and enlarges the horizon of her mind. It energises a society and enables a man to earn his living with respect and praise. Hence my love for it. PRIST therefore is the fruit of my labour and love.

Several of my friends, well wishers and all my teachers here have stood shoulder to shoulder with me throughout my arduous journey to realise the fruition of a small dream of mine set in motion some years ago - when I founded the Ponnaiyah Ramajayam College in 1994.

PRIST aims at carrying ahead the torch of learning further ahead, with added strength, courseware, qualitative dissemination of knowledge, virtue and morality. In to a state of perfect maturation may it become a brilliant morning star in the firmament of higher education, Research and an unending contribution to man and his society.

I whole heartedly thank the parents who in their faith have been patronising the initiatives in my endless drive of making PRIST an ideal place for their children to learn and to become worthy citizens.

I wish the best of fortune, peace and prosperity to all those who contribute to the noble task of spreading education and its manifest qualities, aims and objectives.
Library
The well-stacked libraries at the two campuses provide conducive learning atmosphere. The inventory is enhanced on a daily basis. An ERP package for PRIST includes Library Information System. PRIST is a member of British Council Library. Delnet service provides internet-based access facility to libraries across the world.

The East Campus Library
The library has an area of 8,000 sq.ft. There are 20,300 volumes, 6,600 titles, 55 journals and 700 reference titles. The library subscribes to 51 Magazines, besides having 800 CD-ROMs, 39 Back Volumes.

The West Campus Library
The library has an area of 8,000 sq.ft. There are 29,000 volumes, 9,282 titles, DEL, e-texts, e-journals and 2000 reference titles. The library subscribes to 50 journals, contains 980 CD-ROMs and 131 Back Volumes, AICTE Indest consortium for Electronics Journals, Digital Library for Text and reference and IEEE online for e-journals with 700 documents and 132 journals.
Sports
The Physical Education Department of PRIST coordinates the sports activities. The management's commitment to look after the students' flair for sports got additional fillip by Government of India's grant for augmenting sports equipment.

At the East Campus, a Volley Ball Court and a Basket Ball Court already exist. Courts for Ball Badminton, Shuttle Badminton (separately for boys and girls) and Tennikoit (for girls) are coming up. In West Campus 400 mt. Running Track, Cricket, Volley Ball, Foot Ball, Shuttle Badminton, Long Jump, High Jump, Parallel Bar, Weight Lifting facilities, etc. are provided.

Students create amphibian car

Engineering students of a university in Thanjavur have designed two types of light-weight, eco-friendly and low-cost cars, including an amphibian one capable of travelling on road and floating on water.

While one type of car runs on petrol and LPG, the other one is an electric car operated using a battery tapping solar energy, capable of travelling on road and water.

Two groups of final year engineering students of PRIST University, Thanjavur, have designed the cars in collaboration with Hi-Tech Project Industries, a private engineering services company at Tarangambadi in Nagapattinam district.

Both the cars have been fabricated using steel, Aluminium alloys, plastics and other locally available material and cost below Rs 35,000, researchers at Hi-Tech Project Industries, Tarangambadi said.

The electric car was designed by Rajendra Kumar, Nitesh Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Abhishek Raj, Roopak Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Yadav and Chandrakanth.

The car was capable of running on road as well as on water with a slight modification and could carry two persons, researchers said.When it runs on water, it will act more like a boat.

The car can run at a top speed of 30 kmph on road and at 15 kmph on water and is totally eco-friendly.

The 110-CC petrol- LPG car weighing just 135-kg was designed by Alok Kumar, Amith Kumar, Ananth Kumar and Ajay Kumar.

The car runs at a top speed of 50 kmph and is very fuel efficient at 65 km per litre of petrol, they claimed. When running on LPG, it gives a mileage of 110 km per kg.

Gear system and suspension mechanism in both the vehicles, had been meticulously designed, said Jayaraj, Murali and Balasundaram, researchers at Hi-Tech Project Industries.

District collector T. Munusamy visited Tarangambadi on Tuesday and witnessed a demonstration of the cars.

TN engineering students design nano bike

A group of final year mechanical engineering students of a private university in Tamil Nadu claimed to have designed a 25-kg single-seater nanomotorcycle that could give a mileage of 97 km per litre of petrol.

The students of PRIST University, Thanjavur, have designed the motorcycle under the guidance of their professors and in collaboration with Hi-Tech Project Industries, a private engineering services company at Porayar in the district.

Demonstrating the motorcycle, named Nano Bike at the Hi-Tech Project Industries campus yesterday in the presence of the companys research wing staff, the students claimed the vehicle can touch a maximum speed of 45 kmph and carry one person.

The main frame of the motorbike is made of steel while the wheels are made of aluminium alloy and the petrol tank is made of plastic. To reduce noise, belt drive has been used instead of the traditional chain drive mechanism, the students said.

The students claimed that commercial production of the motorcycle was viable and would cost only about Rs 8,000 per unit.
