The Hon. Chancellor

Thiru Surjit Singh Barnala, His Excellency the Governor of Tamilnadu is the Chancellor of Mother Teresa Women’s University.

Sardar Surjit Singh Barnala was born on 21st October 1925 at Ateli Begpur in Haryana. He passed matriculation at Nabha and then went to Lucknow for higher studies and passed Law from Lucknow University in 1946. During his stay at Lucknow he participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942. He started practicing law in District Courts at Barnala in 1967 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Barnala constituency.

He represented this constituency till 1999. In 1969, he became the Education Minister of Punjab. During his tenure, he was instrumental in establishing Guru Nanak Dev University at Amritsar. In 1977 he was elected to the Parliament and was inducted as Cabinet Minister in the Janata Government headed by Shri Morarji Desai with Agriculture, Food, Irrigation and Rural Development as his portfolios. In 1985 he was elected as President of Shiromani Akali Dal and became the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1985. In 1990 he was appointed as Governor of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and again in 1998 and was appointed as Cabinet Minister with Chemical & Fertilizers and Food & Civil Supplies departments. He was also the first Governor of Uttaranchal state.

He has represented India in the United Nations, FAO, SARC and other international organizations. He has traveled extensively. He is a nature lover, fond of painting, reading and writing. He has painted scores of paintings and an exhibition of his paintings was held in 1998 in the Art Gallery of Patiala University. He has also authored the book “Story of An Escape”. Assumed Office of the Governor of Tamil Nadu on 3rd November 2004.

Dr. K. Ponmudi, Hon ble Minister for Education, Govt of Tamil Nadu and Pro-Chancellor of Mother Teresa Women’s University.

Pro-Chancellor and Honourable Minister for Higher Education Thiru Dr. K. Ponmudi was born on 19.08.1950.

Honourable Minister for Education was elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly from Villupuram.

As the Higher Education Minister, under the able and benevolent leadership of our Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, he has initiated several reformations for the improvement of Higher Education in Tamilnadu.

Academic and Administrative Profile

Prof. Aruna Sivakami served as Professor & Head of Department of Politics and Public Administration, University of Madras with 32 years of Teaching and Research experience in the field of State and Society. She has received the honorary award of Fellow of Society of Environmental Science of India for her contribution on Water Pollution by University of Jharkhand.

Her memberships in professional bodies include Advisory Board for Professional Women, North Carolina, U.S.A since 1997 to the present. She is a member of International Bioethics Association, Asian Bioethics Association and All India Bioethics Association, Indian Political Science Association, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Indian Institute of Public Administration Regional Branch - Tamil Nadu.

She has contributed more than 65 research papers in various National and International Conferences. Her important publications are 21 in reputed Journals and Books. (Sterling Publishers, ABD Publishers, Mittal Publishers, Radha Publishers, Journal of Ecological and Environmental Studies and Journal of Current Sciences). Her Publications mostly focus on Civil Service, Administration and Water Pollution and Gender issues (Health)

Her publication on Paradoxes on Issues of Water Governance by TR publishers Chennai , June 2005 was a research publication. She was Guest Faculty on Cross Cultural Issues of Bioethics in Tsukuba Science University, Japan 1998-2000 and 2004. She has given guest lectures in The Tamil Nadu Ambedkar Law University and Department of Genetics, Department of Philosophy, University of Madras.

Dr. S. Mani , M.A.,B.Ed.,M.Phil., MTM(Tourism)Ph.D an eminent scholar was the Reader of the Department of History ,Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College for Women, Palani. She has assumed charges as Registrar of Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal on 22.11.2007 forenoon.

She started her career as an Assistant Professor in VVV College for Women Virudhu nagar for one year . Later she joined in Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College for Women,Palani as a Lecturer in History and served as a Senior Lecturer in History , Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College for Women,Palani for ten years then was promoted as Reader.

She has more than 23 Years of academic / research experience. She was awarded Ph.D. in 1997 from Madurai Kamaraj University for the thesis titled, “Harijan in Tamilnadu-A study of their Socio-Economic and Political Development (1967-1987) with special reference to Madurai distinct”

She has published number of articles and research papers in National and International Journals, presented 15papers in National and International Seminars and Conferences. She has organized and facilitated a number of training programme and orientation programmes on India/Abroad.. She has conducted research projects funded by National agencies like UGC,CO- HSSIP.

She has been associated with so many national associations with Tamil nadu History Congress – Life Member , Tamil nadu History Congress from 2001-2005-Excutive Member, South Indian History Congress – Life Member .She had served as a Academic Council Member and Member of Board of Studies of Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College for Women,Palani. Distance Education

The School of Distance Education of Mother Teresa Women s University was started in 1988 at Kodaikanal.

Mission: It s Mission is to empower women through education, especially women who for some reason are deprived of studying through the regular mode.
Goal: Our goal is higher education for every women who desires it. We aim to extend on only equal but equitable opportunities of education to women who desire the privilege of higher education, to be pursed at their own pace and time, simultaneously with the demand of a job or domestic commitments.

The School of Distance Education and the Open University Scheme seeks to break the boundaries which block women from pursing higher education by taking education to the homes who cannot go to regular colleges.

The School of Distance Education is a boon, to career women who aspire to enhance their personal and professional competence to home bound women who wish to profitably use their time and resource to satisfy their deferred academic aspirations
to the rural girls who have no access to the mainline educational system


Further the Open University Scheme seeks to open the avenues of education to school dropouts, women entrepreneurs and artists, among others, who wish to enhance their natural expertise and aptitudes through formal learning.

The School Of Distance Education now functions from Kodaikanal and has also many study centers in major cities and towns to reach out to more women and to offer more academic support to them. Mother Teresa Women’s University Library was started in 1984. The university library is virtually a “Mecca” for researchers in Women’s Studies. Its unique and rare collection of books. Reports, and journals on women makes the library for excellence and competence in Women’s Studies. The university Library maintains a comprehensive collection of volumes numbering 52,000 and 3500 volumes of complementary books from various sources. The Thrust area of library is Women’s Studies pertaining to various discipline. Documentation work has been carried out on women related issues.

Membership is open to students, scholars, university faculties and registered part-time scholars. The library is being equipped with INFLIBNET and INTERNET for wide reference and information

Established in 1984, Mother Teresa Women's University was founded by the enactment of Tamil Nadu Act 15. It has been given the responsibility of monitoring, offering consultancy services and research in the areas of Women's Studies.

Mother Teresa Women's University is a state university established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1984 by the enactment of TN State Act 15.
