About Us

The Maha Swamiji of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam had cherished a desire to revive Kanchipuram to its pristine glory as a center of learning. The Viswa Mahavidyalaya at Kanchi was established with the benign Blessings of Their Holiness Pujyasri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamiji and Pujyasri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji and it attained the status of Deemed University in 1993.

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya, formed under the aegis of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Charitable Trust in 1993, is located in a sprawling complex of 50 acres at Enathur, at a distance of about 4 Kilometres from Kanchipuram.

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya at Kanchi was started with the blessings of Pujyasri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamiji and Pujyasri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji. The Mahavidyalaya attained the status of a Deemed University in the year 1993.

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya was established in 1956 under Section 3 of UGC Act. It is a deemed university and located in Kanchipuram city of Tamil Nadu. Situated in a sprawling complex at Enathur, at the distance of about 4 Kilometres from Kanchipuram, the university functions under the aegis of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Charitable Trust. The University has established another campus in Poonamalle, Chennai which houses an Ayurveda College, research centre and hospital. Vission And Mission

Vision : The true purpose of education is to prepare student mind to find harmony with the culture of the land and mould students into noble human beings with strong character, warmth and compassion. Enabling students to acquire knowledge in class rooms and technical skills in laboratory is just a necessary but not sufficient condition for student development. What is more important is to identify the innate talents of students and bring out their hidden potentialities to purpose for all around personality development, which will stand by them, in serving the society with responsibility and commitment later in their career. Accent is on the fusion of Eastern thought and Western methodology in education. This is the vision of our Mahavidyalaya, which bears a unique stamp of identity.

Mission : The mission is a holistic approach to higher education with academic standards consistent with an embedded value system, enabled by a dynamic process of synergy. The Mantra is Educational Delight of students engaged in study and faculty engaged in teaching and research in their journey and destination of Excellence with Creativity. The Mahavidyalaya offers presently programmes in Sanskrit and Traditional Sastras. In modern education, it offers UG and PG courses in various branches of Engineering, and PG courses in Computer Application and Management Studies. Bachelor.s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine, keeping with the original Ayurvedic tradition is offered in a constituent unit of the Mahavidyalaya. It offers Ph.D programmes in all disciplines.

In keeping with the above vision, the emphasis in planning and development of the Mahavidyalaya is the blending of traditional wisdom of our land with modern science (technology) towards an integrated programme of higher education.

Objectives

1. To discover, preserve and transmit the vast knowledge of Vedas, Sastras, Agamas and other ancient traditional arts connected with our hoary Indian culture and Civlisation.

2. To bring Vedic learning to the status of an University system with a code of syllabus, offering Degree Programmes leading to Ph.D., to graduate the students of Sanskrit in the contemporary education as well, so at to enable them to fit into contemporary work situation, should they choose to do so.

3. To conduct research in the Vedic System and to relate the same to the present day scientific developments and needs of humanity and spread the universality and catholicity of the Vedic knowledge and its integrating solution to the problems of disintegration of the modern times.

4. To make special provisions for offering integrated courses in Vedas, Humanities, Applied Sciences, Applied Social Sciences and Technology in the educational programmes of the Mahavidyalaya.

5. To take special measures to facilitate students and teachers from all over India and from other countries as well as to join the Mahavidyalaya and participate in its academic programmes, and to provide for instruction and training in such branches of learning as it may deem fit.

6. To offer unique educational programmes combining teaching of traditional Sanskrit courses and integrating them with modern science courses; Like Ayurveda and conventional Medicine; Vastu Sastra and Architecture, Computer Technology, Astronomy, Physics and Mathematics; Rare Sanskrit works of scientific nature like Vimana Sastra, Sulba Sastra, Krishi, Vriksha, and Silpa Sastras combined with the relevant modern subjects as Chemistry, Metallurgy, Engineering, Architecture and Medicine (human, veterinary and plant), Bio - technology, Genetics, Artha Sastra and Business Administration and the Like.

7. To work in conjunction and association with other allied organisation having similar objectives.

8. To do such other things as may be necessary, incidental, conductive or convenient to the attainment of the above objectives.

Emblem

Description of the Emblem : The motto 'vande sadgurum chandrasekharam' means 'I adore the virtuous preceptor' guru sri chandrasekharendra saraswathi maha swamigal, by whose name the viswa mahavidyalaya is established and stands to fulfill his great vision.

The illuminous blessing palm symbolizes the vast knowledge he transformed to generations. The joining of the thumb and forefinger denotes the merger of brahma and jeeva (the advaita philosophy), which can also be interpreted as integration of the ancient vedic knowledge with the modern scientific knowledge.

The vyasapeetha (Wooden pedestal for holding books) and the grantha (Palm leaves) represent ghatikasthanam (place of knowledge) the eighteen vidyasthanams and sixty four traditional arts.

Culture : The university envisages a culture that is characterized by excellent faculty-student interaction and prevalence of 'one family' atmosphere. The emphasis is not on mere acquisition of knowledge and its application but on the all-round personality development of the student and his value system. Education is viewed not as accumulation of ideas, but as a process of channelising them to perfection, leading to proper development of the faculties of the student and hence life making.

Vice Chancellors Profile

Prof. Dr. VAIDYANATHAN SHIVKUMAR
Professor V. Shivkumar is currently an Adjunct Faculty and former Director of the UGC Center for Latin American and International Studies, Goa University. He is one of the very few academics who had ventured to specialize on Caribbean and Inter-American affairs in the country. The Dean of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Ambassadors in India (GRULAC) had recently honored him for his two decades of dedicated work in promoting Indo-Latin American and Caribbean relations.

Professor Shivkumar is a Member of the UGC Standing Committee on Area Studies. He has organized more than 15 conferences, both national and international, in the last 15 years on various themes related to the LAC region. The output of some of the conferences served as a source for policy formulations of 'Focus LAC' of the Government of India. Professor Shivkumar has also delivered endowment lectures at various Universities in India, lectured at the National Defence College, College of Naval Warfare, and INS, Mandovi. Professor Shivkumar is a former Dean of Social Sciences, Law and Education, and functioned as Acting Vice Chancellor of the Goa University.

Professor Shivkumar earned his Masters in History from the University of Madras, and worked for his doctorate degree from the School of International Studies, JNU, and the American University, Washington DC, on a theme related to US intervention in the Dominican Republic in 1965 and the Role of the Organization of American States, which was later published with a grant from ICSSR. He co- edited a book along with one of our eminent former Diplomats Shri I. J. Bahudur Singh on Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean. Our former Vice-President and Diplomat, Shri K.R. Narayanan, released the book in 1985 at the India International Center, New Delhi. As a part of his academic exercise, he has authored many books and articles on various issues related to the region which include US Interventionalism in Latin America (With special reference to Dominican Republic) and Role of the Organization of American States, Latin American Perspective on Kashmir Issue in the UN Security Council and an edited volume titled Emerging Trends in Indo-Latin American Relations. The latter publication is the product of an International Conference organized by him in 1997 at Goa in which Scientists from ISRO, NIO, the business community, CII representatives, representatives of the Ministry of Commerce and External Affairs, and academicians along with Ambassadors and High Commissioners of the LAC region explored possible areas of cooperation. Some of the recommendations made in this volume provided the necessary input for the aforementioned FOCUS LAC Policy. In 2005, he once again organized another International Conference inviting all the 14 Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Latin American and Caribbean Countries along with the Ambassadors of Spain and Portugal. This conference was a sequence to the earlier one held in 1997 and analyzed in depth the possibilities for greater interaction between the two regions in the era of Globalization. HE the Governor of Goa, Shri S.C.Jamir inaugurated the Conference, the proceedings of which are under publication. HE the Governor Shri Jamir, in his inaugural address appreciated the efforts of Prof. Shivkumar in cementing Indo-LAC relations.

Prof. Shivkumar's wife, Dr Kamal, who earned her Doctorate in Indian Philosophy, had furthered her academic interests by means of a post doctoral study on the influence of Hindu Philosophy and Thought on the people of Trinidad. Her thesis entitled Philosophy of Advaita was published recently.

Professor Shivkumar is one of the early-bird scholars to work in the field of Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean. He had visited the region as a Visiting Scholar in 1997-98, and personally interacted with the Indian community in Trinidad, Mexico and Argentina. He is also involved with the Foreign Service Institute and the College of Naval Warfare and been interacting with diplomats from the region. He had been invited to the United States under International Visitors programme to participate in 21 nations conference to observe the making of US foreign policy in 1991.

Professor is the Founder-President of the Indo-Latin American & Caribbean Association for International Trade and Cultural Co-operation. He was also instrumental in establishing Jawaharlal Nehru Centre at Goa University. He is an advocate of the Non-Aligned policy and South-South cooperation.

Professor Shivkumar was born in a small town in North Arcot District of Tamil Nadu. His father, Professor K Vaidyanathan Iyer, was a freedom fighter and a leading intellectual in the field of Indian philosophy and culture. Professor Shivkumar's eldest brother, Dr V Gowrishanker, IA&AS (Retd), LLB, PhD, was a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and an expert on taxation.

The Department of Sanskrit and Indian Culture alone has produced more than 25 doctoral degrees. A large number of researchers are pursuing their doctoral research programmes through various departments.

Admissions are offered twice a year into the Doctoral programmes.

Library

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi International Library Established in 1995, housed in Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Diamond Jubilee mahal is a unique facility in the University. Spread across an area of 7,500 sq. feet occupying spacious accommodations in three floors, the library provides an ideal ambience for reflection and study. The library plays a vital role in supporting teaching learning and research through lending . Reference and enquiry services there are around 200000 books ,current periodicals and expanding range of electronic services including over 1,000 tapes and CD ROMS of which the library dedicates a deserve a collection of books to the IT World and subscribes to over 100 specialized national and international journals.

COLLECTION OF PALM LEAVES AND MANUSCRIPTS
The entire collection of books and journals are equipped with Bar-Coding technology using 'Bear Rock Technologies Bar-Code software'. Library Management is fully automated through the LIBSUITE library package.

One unique feature of this library is the collection of rare and ancient manuscripts and palm-leaves, more than 6000 in number all micro film and preserved in air-conditioned rooms, benefiting to high quality research in sanskrit and various fields of modern science and technologies.

The library keeps itself equipped and updated through close contacts with the publishing world, academic councils, professional bodies, research institutions and industries.

Educational Streams

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya provides educational programmes combining teaching of Sanskrit with modern scientific education. This pattern of study is developed so that the students are able to develop a scientific temper and rationale, and also benefit from the stored up knowledge of past generations of Indian civilization.

Presently, the university offers various programmes in Sanskrit and Sastras. To ensure modern education for its students, it offers several UG and PG courses in various branches of Engineering, Computer Application and Management Studies. The students can also go for research work in all disciplines.

Poonamalle campus of the university hosts an Ayurveda college and hospital. The university offers 5½ years BAMS degree (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery). This institution has been approved by the Central Council of Indian Medicine, New Delhi, the authority for Ayurvedic education in India. A herb garden has been developed with more than 450 species for aiding Ayurvedic Pharmacy that prepares a range of Ayurvedic medicines.

Facilities
SCSVMV campus hosts separate hostels for boys and girls. Facilities in the hostels include comfortable and well-ventilated rooms, peaceful and pollution-free surroundings, dining and mess facilities, telephone & internet access, common room with facilities of indoor and outdoor games, and round-the-clock security. The university library has a vast collection of books, current periodicals, specialized national and international journals as well as digital material. A branch of Indian Bank is also located in university campus. Bus transportation is also available to local students.

Academic Programs

I. Academic Matters
Specific activities under this agreement shall include:
1. To conduct jointly courses through innovative and collaborative well designed curriculum in tune with market dynamics of the award of post graduate diploma or degree in Business Management (viz., Executive MBA) and short term certificate courses.

2. Joint hosting of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences nationally and internationally to promote academic and professional excellence.

3. Promote collaborative research and related innovative activities between SCSVMV and Great Lakes, through the Yale Great Lakes Center of Management Research, Kotler - Srinivasan Centre for Research in Marketing and other such appropriate entities on either side.

4. Any other Scholarly activities that will be mutually beneficial to the two institutions.

II. Duration and Termination
This agreement effective from the date specified here, shall be in force for a period of three years. Thereafter, it could be continued in the same or any mutually agreed upon modified form, subject to annual review. Both the parties have the responsibility to fulfill their commitments to the last admitted students for a period up to which they complete their program. Subject to this, either party may terminate this agreement upon 90 days prior written notice to the other.

III. Financial
Any and all financial matters pursuant to this Agreement shall be negotiated separately of an activity, project, or programme basis that would be mutually agreed upon.

IV. Co - ordination
Operationally, this Agreement will be coordinated by a committee consisting of representatives drawn from both sides under the overall guidance of a the following two signatories of the agreement.

V. Jurisdiction
