Introduction

Sri Jagganath Sanskrit university was founded in the year 1981. Sri Jagannath Sanskrit university is one of the oldest Sanskrit universities in India. Located at Puri, this university is under the jurisdiction of the state government of Orissa. This institution has struggled in order to make a mark in the world of Sanskrit. The Sanskrit university of Sri Jagganath has taken almost 18 years to achieve great heights. The university is situated amidst natural surroundings. It is almost 4 kilometers away from the main railway station. This Sanskrit university is known to provide high-class Sanskrit training to their students. The glorious library of the university possess a unique collection of Sanskrit and cultural texts.

It offers training in these spheres, which are namely grammar or "vyakarana", Sanskrit literature or "Sahitya", three sections of Indian philosophy. In the post graduate departments doctorate and post doctorate trainings, post PG training for teachers are available. More than 100 degree and pre-degree colleges are affiliated to the Sri Jagganath Sanskrit University.

Courses offered to the students are as follows:
* Two years Acharya (M.A)

* One year Vshistacharya (M.Phil) in Vyakarana, Sarvadarshan, Veda and Sahitya, Dharmashastra, Nyaya, Adwaita vedanta

With the establishment of this university the old traditional ways of imparting knowledge to the students were revived. The teaching staff has always tried to inculcate amongst their students the old and archaic heritage of Sanskrit that is very rich and varied in itself.

The university is not only dedicated to offer worthwhile knowledge but it has been taking special classes in order to build the moral integrity of every student.

The Plan
The Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Vidya Mandir Trust and the Government of Orissa signed a Memorandum of Understanding on December 18, 2006 to establish a full-fledged multidisciplinary university near the former capital, Cuttack within two or three years. The goal of the university would be to provide holistic education that is firmly embedded in Indian culture and ethos to the global leaders of tomorrow. Admission into the university will be based on merit alone, which will be assessed based on an entrance examination. Admission into the proposed varsity will be open to Indian as well as foreign nationals.

The proposed campus is likely to come up in approximately 200-300 acres of land along the banks of the Kathjodi river in Naraj, which is about 10 km from Cuttack city and 30 km away from Bhubaneswar. The campus will include academic buildings, recreational facilities, meditation halls, and a sports complex. It will be designed to cater to the needs of 1,500 faculty members, an equal number of non-academic staff members, and 15,000 students.

The international consultancy firm Deloitte Hanskins & Sells, has been appointed to chart the strategic plans for Sri Sri university.
