Profile

Maharashtra State had no Sanskrit University before 1997. The former Prime Minister of India, Honble Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao, who is a great scholar of Sanskrit, always insisted that Maharashtra has a great tradition of Sanskrit learning hence it should have an independent University.
The initiative of Honble Shri.P.V. Narasimha Rao and the strong motivation of Late Shri. Sudhakarrao Naik and the tireless efforts of Dr. Shrikant Jichkar in creating a non-formal model and well studied act for the University has helped the smooth establishment and take off of this University.
The University was established on 18th September 1997. The place Ramtek, which is a township in Nagpur district, was selected because it is connected to the name of great poet of the world Kavikulaguru Kalidas.
Dr.V.V. Mirashi the great ideologist had propounded the theory that Mahakavi Kalidas was a contemporary of Chandragupta II of Gupta dynasty and Kalidas must have been the courtier of this emperor. The daughter of golden era maker emperor Chandragupta II was given in marriage to king Rudrasena of Vakataka dynasty in Vidarbha with capital at Nagardhan near Ramtek. The daughters name was Prabhavati Gupta. After having two sons, Prabhavatis husband Rudrasen Vakatak suddenly died. Queen Prabhavati decided to look after the administration and requested her father to send some courtiers for her guidance. Dr. V. V. Mirashi who has propounded this theory tries to establish that Kalidas was one of the courtiers who had come from the Gupta capital to Vakatak capital to assist the queen mother Prabhavati. Thus Kalidas lived here for full one calendar year and composed his immortal poem Meghadoot here on Ramgiri hillock.
The Vishvavidyalaya is named after the National poet of India, Kalidasa, who had been reverentially called Kavikulaguru.

Kalidasa Abhijnansakuntalam prompted the German poet Goethe to say:

Ich nenne dich die Sakuntala
und alles ist gesagt

(I recommend to you the Sakuntala and everything is said about)
Kalidasa made a perfect verbal presentation of entire India in his poems. The flora-fauna, the emotional ties, the rivers and mountains and the history of India-nothing escaped from his sight. After Vyasa, Kalidasa alone deserves that coveted place among the foremost of Sanskrit poets.
Thus the Association of Kalidas with Ramtek resulted in naming Ramtek as the head quarter of this first Sanskrit University of Maharashtra and Central India. Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University is the statutory University having affiliatory powers within and without India with core jurisdiction of State of Maharashtra.

Different from other Sanskrit Universities of India

Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University of Maharashtra is unique in nature and is entirely different from all the existing Sanskrit Universities in academic nature. The other Sanskrit Universities cater for traditional learning in Sanskrit like Veda, Vedanta, Vyakarana, Nyaya, Mimamsa Dharmashastra and Sahitya etc. Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University has innovative academic programme and syllabus having modern subjects associated with traditional Sanskrit. On one hand, the courses emphasise on modernity and on the other hand they strive to preserve traditionality. All the courses of K.K. Sanskrit University are consultancy-oriented. The University has special emphasis on Science and Technology in ancient India as preserved in the Sanskrit texts.
Sanskrit language is the soul of Indian land, which can never be separated from the breathings of various speeches of this land. It had been, for ages, the language of thinking class of the country in which the thinkers of old days had found an apt instrument to communicate their ideology to others. There is external facility for admission.

Courses

The University was started at the end of 1997. In the first academic year 1998-99 one course was started to attract students willing to learn in Sanskrit from the beginning.

It was a beginning course and provided skills in Spoken Sanskrit and Written Sanskrit in short period and with little efforts.

This (Agam) was the lone course started by the University in that academic year.

In the next year i.e. 1999-2000 the number of courses rose to ten and after two years i.e. in the academic year 2001-02 the number of University courses has risen to a staggering number of 40.

The courses floated by Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University are completely original in nature prepared on the basis of social requirements with Sanskrit as a main ingredient. The courses have following specialties.

A. The courses are available from the basic stage of Sanskrit study till the end of Sanskrit Scholarship.

B. The University has special emphasis on making Sanskrit Lokavani.

C. Three fold action viz.
1. Protection of Shastras
2. Creation of New Sanskrit Literature and
3. Propagation of Sanskrit language is the main activity of the university.

D. The University has open door system. The various unnecessary technicalities have been removed in the functioning of this university. At all levels the condition of knowledge of Sanskrit as pre-requisite for admission has been removed.

E. This open door system will help many curious students from different streams/ faculties to turn to the Sanskrit studies who earlier could not study Sanskrit because of faculty barriers.

F. All the courses of the University are consultancy-oriented. Some of them are even job-oriented. These courses prove that Sanskrit has strong bread-winning potential in this Jet Era of New World.

G. Though Sanskrit University is a one subject University, it is not catering just for Sanskrit courses. It is a Sanskrit biased University, which means that every course has Sanskrit as compulsory subject, which is taught in combination with the most modern subjects like Travel Tourism, Market Management, Human Resource Management etc. To facilitate double gain for the students, the university has converted I.A.S. M.P.S.C. curriculum into Degree Course having Sanskrit as an important subject.

H. The University provides ATKT, Grace Mark, Condonation Marks to students which helps in encouraging them to prosecute their Sanskrit studies.
