Introduction

Marathwada Agricultural University, Set up in 1972, Marathwada Agricultural University (MAU) Parbhani, one of the prestigious agricultural universities in India, is located in the state of Maharashtra. Since its inception, it has gained recognition as an innovative organization in the term of education and research in agriculture. Also known as Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, it takes care of research and facilitates agriculture technology transfer in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. The university has jurisdiction over the districts of Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad and Parbhani.

Established in 1972, on Land grant pattern , Marathwada Agricultural University (MAU) Parbhani is one of the four Agril. universities in state of Maharashtra. Except some industrialization around Aurangabad and Nanded, the entire region has rural setting. The objectives of the University are : Education in agriculture & Allied Sci.,Undertake Research based on regional needs and facilitate Technology transfer etc.

Profile of University

Marathwada Agricultural University, MAU is one of four Agricultural universities in the State of Maharashtra. Prior to original Maharashtra Agricultural University, it was established on May 18, 1972 to fulfill the regional aspirations of agrarian growth. It is entrusted with the responsibilities to pro- vide education in agriculture and allied fields, undertake research and facilitate technology transfer in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. The first college of Agriculture was established in this region at Parbhani in 1956 by Hyderabad State Government just before State reorganization. During Nizam's rule, however, agricultural education was available only at Hyderabad but crop research centers viz., sorghum, cotton, fruits existed in the region. The foundation of research was laid by the erstwhile Nizam State with commencement of the Main Experimental Farm at Parbhani in 1918. The famous 'Gaorani' desi cotton is the result of the research on cotton and local sorghum cultivars were improved by selection by the then Economic Botanist. Since then Parbhani remains the hub of educational, research and extension activities in Marathwada.

The University provides education in agriculture, allied sciences and humanities field. It provides research base facility to develop the output of important agriculture - livestock, fisheries, horticulture, and agriculture - related activities of Marathwada region. It provides and leads extension education programmes, first line transfer of technology, extended services of training, conduct demonstrations and develop proper communication network.

History

Marathwada Agricultural University was established in the year 1972 to develop agri-allied technology and fulfill the needs of this region. It was entrusted with the responsibilities to provide education in agriculture and allied fields, undertake research and facilitate technology transfer in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Thanks to the activities of Marathwada Agricultural University, Parbhani region has become the hub of educational, research activities in Marathwada.

MAU is one of four Agril. Universities in the State of Maharashtra. Mandates

Provide education in agriculture, allied sciences and humanities

Provide research base to improve the productivity of important agri-horticulture, livestock, fisheries and agri-allied activities of Marathwada region.

To develop appropriate plans for conservation of natural resources and sustainable use.

To undertake and guide extension education programmes, first line transfer of technology, extend services of training, conduct demonstrations and develop appropriate communication network.
Standardize technologies for crop production, protection, harvesting, marketing, post-harvest utilization as also for livestock, fisheries and allied agro-communities for improving the living status of farmers, farm workers and Women of Marathwada.

Provide the necessary production support of nucleus, breeders and foundation seed of important crops of the region and also generate revenue through large farms for sustainable growth of the University.

The MAU region falls in Deccan Plateau Zone. It is basically an intense agrarian region with geographical area of 6.5 M ha occupying 21 per cent of total area of the State. The University HQ is located on Manmad-Nanded Railway track .It is around 200 km from Aurangabad city and well connected by Rail & Road. The nearest airport is Aurangabad.

Library

In modern world of information explosion an effective library and information service is a basic necessity. Library at this university is functioning to cater to the information needs of the academic community of college of agriculture another colleges in the campus of this university. This library is growing day to day with the inception of new colleges of Food Science and Technology, Home Science, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture and also by the creation of post graduate faculty in all disciplines. Apart from it, the research activities on the campus as well as at all the research centers under this university have been intensified with the sanction of more research schemes by the state as well as central governments. This is the single library to support the entire teaching, research and extension activities under this university campus at Parbhani.

Organizational Structure of Library :
Marathwada Agricultural University is located at the center of university campus Parbhani. The library services are distributed in different sections of this library namely.
Acquisition Technical Circulation and Maintenance of books Periodical and Reference CD-ROM Facility and internet access Binding and Maintenance Office, Xerox facility,research cubicals,3 reading halls and Digital Library.

There are five colleges inside the campus, these Colleges are not having their college libraries and using the central university library facilities. There are four colleges outside the campus of this university. These colleges are newly started and having their new college libraries

Library Building :
The university library building is planned on modular principles based on the requirements of the university library complex. It has three spacious reading halls and three floors for storing the reading material apart from the areas for library staff and Research cubicles . The plan of the library building comprises the following areas.
Lower ground floor :

Book procurement section, Audiovisual room, store room
Book dormitory and Bindery.

Upper ground floor :
Under-graduate Reading hall with 4,350 square feet carpet area to accommodate 180 students.
Stack room 1, with 1,460 square feet carpet area to accommodate 30,000 books.

Administrative Offices : Librarian and Deputy Librarian rooms to accommodate administrative section.

Ist floor consists two reading halls accommodating 180 students each on either side and the middle area is for storing one 1 lakh books.

Ist floor mazanine floor has again meant for storing journals, back volumes, serials etc.

IInd floor having referance section, loose issues of Journals, Current Journals, research cubiclas .and reading area

Achivements:
Yearly Library receipts increased. from Rs.50,000/- to Rs.3,00,000/- + Library fees of 5 colleges in the University campus around 12,00,000/- i,e. Rs 15 Lakhs.
Timings 7.30 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. throughout the year

E-Journal access : Different CD ROM databases, online databases and network services are subscribed and through these databases E-journals access services are provided. Jccc and openj-gate Online access of e-journals is also provided to Library members. Inflibnet and delnet membership is available to access these networks. cera.jccc.in online journals access is provided from ICAR to the library users

Mosquito free clean library environment.
Book Bank :5 Text books are provided through the Book Bank to the students for one semester period. This activity runs through th profit of university Book Centre also Five Books are provided to Backward class students for one semester through student welfare Book Bank.
Home Databases available are Ph.D theses databases, OPAC, Serials Control , Question papers etc.
45 Research cubicles are provided to Ph.D. and other research students with charges Rs 150/- per semester.

Library Seminar hall is provided to the counseling and Placement Cell and for conducting of competitive examinations.

Educational Streams

The university conducts education and research in Agriculture, Allied Sciences and Humanities. The organization and work system of the institution are designed to improve the productivity of agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries and agri-allied activities of Marathwada region. It guides extension education programs, first line transfer of technology, extend services of training, conduct demonstrations and develop appropriate communication network. MAU Parbhani develops technology for crop production, protection, harvesting, marketing, post-harvest utilization as also for livestock, fisheries and allied agro-communities for improving the living status of farmers, farm workers and Women of Marathwada. The admission process for admission to all the courses imparted by MAU starts generally in the month of June every year.

Facilities
MAU Parbhani provides facilities like library, computer centre, exhibitions, field facilities, work shop, playgrounds and gymnasium. It offers sufficient opportunities to students to develop their skills. The University has superb network of extension programmes in all the districts of Marathwada region. Fairs, Rallies, Exhibition and farmer discussions are the common events at Marathwada Kirishividyapeeth which help the students understand the local problems in agriculture.
