Profile of University
Nitte University has been formed and recognised as a deemed university under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 vide University Grants Commission(UGC) notification No. F. 9-13/2007-U.3(A) dated June 4, 2008. The first constituent college of the University will be the A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. N Vinaya Hegde, president of Nitte Education Trust, will be the chancellor of this new niversity while Dr Shantharam Shetty, former Dean of K S Hegde Medical Academy will be the first vice-chancellor.
Nitte Education Trust was formed in the year 1979, under the leadership of Justice K S Hegde to provide basic education, health care and to train manpower. The trust established a high school at Nitte in 1979. Later this trust never turned back, opening new colleges and educational institutions regularly.
Nitte Education Trust manages medical, dental and four paramedical colleges, a 600-bed specialty hospital, two engineering colleges, two MBA institutions, two MCA institutions, a college of hotel management, two technical training institutions, two first grade colleges, two pre-university colleges, five schools and a three star hotel. About ten thousand students study in various institutes of the trust and about 3500 personnel serve in all the 23 institutions. The trust has a medical sciences complex at Deralakatte and two campuses, one each at Nitte and Bangalore.
About Nitte Education Trust
Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself - John Dewey. This adage is perhaps best reflected in what the late Justice K S Hegde, a committed philanthropist and legal luminary strongly believed in - that education is vital for the overall progress of a communityand it is this vision that saw the birth of the Nitte Education Trust.
In 1979, seven committed persons, all sharing the same concern to the cause of education and community development, under the leadership and guidance of Justice K S Hegde formed an association. Justice Hegde, conceived the idea of a trust, which would provide basic education, health care and train manpower. Thus, was born the Nitte Education Trust. It was formally baptised on August 30, 1979.
Justice K S Hegde, the founder was the prime mover of the Trust.
With emphasis being laid on education, the Trust established a high school at Nitte in 1979. Today, the Nitte Education Trust comprises a medical, dental and 5 paramedical colleges, a 720 bed speciality hospital, 2 engineering colleges, 2 MBA institutes, 2 MCA institutes, a college of hotel management, 2 technical training institutes, 2 first grade colleges, 2 pre-university colleges, 5 schools and a 3-star hotel - in all 23 institutions with 10,000 students, 3,500 staff and 18,500 alumni.
Recognised as one of the finest educational institutions in Karnataka attracting students from all over India and abroad, the Trust has a Medical Sciences Complex at Deralakatte, Mangalore and 2 well developed campuses at Nitte and Bangalore. All the institutions maintained by the Trust have excellent infrastructural facilities like spacious classrooms, laboratories, libraries, faculty etc. The campuses have professionally and aesthetically designed buildings, surrounded by gardens making it highly conducive for learning. Each is a self-contained campus with separate hostels for men and women with staff wardens, 24 hr telephone and Internet facilities, co-operative stores, a post office and a bank. The system of teacher guardianship wherein a group of 5 students are assigned a teacher is a unique feature of our institutions. This system helps a teacher attend to each student especially those who are weak academically. Professional campus counsellors interact with students having personal, disciplinary or emotional problems.
All the students of our institutions are covered by the Medicare scheme, which entitles them to free medical and dental care and treatment at the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
The students are also encouraged to actively participate in our community development projects as the Trust not only believes that students become powerful by knowledge, but also that they become responsible citizens if they have an understanding of human conditions. It is the desire of the NET institutions to prepare and present to the society, young men and women, who have speculative knowledge (Jnana) and actual experience of the perfection (Vijana).
"To develop Nitte University as a centre of excellence, imparting quality education, generating competent, skilled and humane manpower to face the scientific, technological, managerial and social challenges in the fast-evolving global scenario, with high degree of credibility, integrity, ethical standards and social concern."
Justice K S Hegde (1909 - 1990) - Born in Kowdoor village on June 16, 1909, Kowdoor Sadananda Hegde had his early education at Karkala and Mangalore. Thereafter, he pursued his collegiate education in Madras at the Presidency College and got his BA (Honors) in Economics and later, a Degree in Law from the Government Law College, Madras.
He began his legal practice at Karkala in 1936 and later moved to Mangalore, where he was appointed public prosecutor of South Canara district in 1948. He was elected member of the First Council of States (now known as the Rajya Sabha).
In 1954, he represented India at the General Assembly of the United Nations. He then, became a judge of the Mysore High Court. In 1966, he was appointed the first Chief Justice of the Delhi and Himachal Pradesh High Court. He held this office till he was elevated to the post of judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1967. However, he resigned from office in 1973, in protest against the supercession of senior judges in the appointment of the Chief Justice of India.
In 1977, Justice K S Hegde was elected to the Lok Sabha and later, was appointed Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He held this office till 1980. After a distinguished career, he retired from public life and settled at Nitte, only to relentlessly work for the upliftment and empowerment of the rural people. Justice K S Hegde passed away on May 25, 1990.
