Profile of Birsa Agricultural University

Introduction
Birsa Agricultural University or BAU Ranchi was set up to develop agriculture and related activities in the plateau region of South Bihar. One of the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), Birsa Agricultural University is committed to developing area specific technologies and manpower in the field of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Forestry. It has been recognized by University Grant Commission (UGC) and is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). BAU is a complete residential university. The university has its jurisdiction over entire state.

Agricultural education was first started in Bihar in 1945 with the establishment of Bihar Agricultural College at Sabour in the district of Bhagalpur. Later on, it was realised that the agricultural situation and features of the plateau region of South Bihar is different from the rest of Bihar. Hence there was a need of a second college for this region. Ranchi Agricultural College was established in 1955, Ranchi Veterinary College in 1962 and College of Forestry in 1980. Considering the importance of agricultural education for the agricultural development of the state, the first Agricultural University in Bihar - Rajendra Agricultural University was started in1971 with its headquarters at Pusa. In view of the specific agriculture features of Chotanagpur and Santhal Parganas, the establishment of a second Agricultural University, for this region of the Bihar State, was conceived.

Birsa Agricultural University was established on 26th June, 1981 after its formal inauguration by the then Prime Minister of India, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. Its primary objective is developing area specific technologies and manpower in the field of agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry for the agricultural development of the plateau region of Bihar and economic upliftment of tribal and other backward class population of the region. The programmes and activities of education, research and extension are carried out through three faculties (Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry and Forestry), with thirty five departments, College of Biotechnology, six Directorates, three Zonal Research Stations and farms, one University farm, twelve Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Department of Information & Computer Application in Agriculture, library and other infrastructure and service units. Being a completely residential university, hostels for boys and girls, and residential facilities for teachers/Scientists, and supporting staff, have been provided in the campus.

Location
The entire newly created 28th State of the Indian Republic "Jharkhand is the service area of the University, comprising of 22 districts, 212 development blocks, 3765 panchayat and 32,615 villages. The University is located, on Ranchi - Patratu Road , about 8 km north of Ranchi town, about 13 km north of Ranchi Railway Station and about 17 km north of Ranchi Airport . The location stands at 85019'E and 23017'N and 625 meters above mean sea level. The climate is sub-humid mega thermal with large winter water deficiency.

History
Birsa Agricultural University Jharkhand was established in 1981 after its formal inauguration by the then Prime Minister of India, Late Smt Indira Gandhi. Objective behind its foundation was developing area specific technologies and manpower in the field of agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry.

Educational Streams
Birsa Agricultural University follows semester system of education. Activities of education, research and extension are carried out through the faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry and Forestry, along with three zonal research stations and farms, one university farm, twelve Krishi Vigyan Kendras.

Department of Information & Computer Application in Agriculture looks after how computers can be used in developing agriculture. Postgraduate courses are accorded in the disciplines of Agriculture, Veterinary Science and Forestry. Ph D is available in Agriculture and Veterinary Science. Four Semesters are the minimum residential requirements for Masters degree for regular students. Degree is awarded by the Post-graduate faculty on the basis of course-cum-research studies spread over the whole period of four semesters.

Admission to different undergraduate programmes is completed through bifold procedure. 15% of total seats are filled by a Combined Competitive Entrance Examination conducted by ICAR VCI at all India level and 85% of the total seats are filled by Jharkhand Combined Competitive Entrance Examination Board, Ranchi. The university also offers M Sc degree in Bio-technology. Ph D Degree is awarded by the University in Post-graduate Faculty on the basis of course-cum-research thesis evaluation. A student is required to complete 24 credit hours course work and 36 hours research work spread over 4 semesters.

Facilities
Being a completely residential university, Birsa Agricultural University Ranchi provides for quarters for staff and hostels for boys / girls. Computer center, Guest house, Health care center, Cultural and Sports activities are other facilities. Placement Cell assists students to avail job opportunities. Various departments have their own library including Agricultural/ Veterinary/ Forestry and Biotechnology library. Apart from these, there is a central library too. It has a large collection of books on agriculture and allied sciences. The library is developing rapidly with computers, multimedia units and various electronics gadgets

The Central Library, Birsa Agricultural University has been established in the year 1987. During the last 18 years of its existence, sincere efforts have been made to equip the library. The post graduate students, research scholars and scientist engaged in various ICAR/State Govt ./ Govt . of India schemes are taking full uses of the library facilities.

The Birsa Agricultural University , Central Library, Kanke Ranch is University having dedicated to the promotion of Education, Research and Extension in Agriculture, Veterinary, Forestry and Biotechnology. It has the largest collection on Agriculture, Veterinary, Forestry and Biotechnology and allied subjects. Library is growing very fast with computers, multimedia units and various electronics gadget due to the whole hearted financial provisions of the ICAR-NATP project. Agri Engineering college for self-sustenance

Ranchi, June 19 (PTI) With an aim to become self-sustenance in agricultural production, Jharkhand will have a new Agriculture Engineering College with a capacity of forty seats. Laying on-line foundation stone for the college building here, Chief Minister Arjun Munda said a four-year course of B Tech in Agriculture Engineering would be taught here. The college would be under Birsa Agriculture University and teaching would be up to the standard of Indian Council of Agriculture Research, an official release said quoting Munda. Stating that uplift of farmers has been one of the important features in all round development, Munda said the new college would help in expanding agriculture production through state-of-the-art technology. Munda said after functioning of the college would help the state become self-sufficient in agri-production. According to official data, the state imports grains to meet its total requirement every year. PTI PVR AMD
