Introduction

Indian School of Mines(ISM), Dhanbad was established by the viceroy of India, Lord Irwin in 9 December,1926 on the model of Royal School of Mines. In 1997 the institute conducted admission through the entrance exam conducted by IIT(Indian Institute of Technology), Benaras Hindu University and ISM. The School was bestowed upon the university status by the UGC Act in 1967. in 1996 the School came under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Indian School of Mines (ISM) is a fully Resident and co-educational university located in the mineral-rich belt of India in the city of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It was established in 1926 on the lines of Royal School of Mines,London. Today, it is a multi-disciplinary institute catering to a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines and is considered among the best engineering institutes in the country.

The Indian School of Mines is the only institute of its kind in India and has traditionally catered extensively to the mining, mining machinery, mineral and petroleum industries. Yet, over the years, other engineering disciplines have made their mark in their respective sectors and are now churning out some of the most talented engineers in India.

ISM is rapidly improving its position among the top engineering colleges of India. It is consistently ranked among the top academic institutions in India. In the latest Outlook ranking of Top Engineering Colleges of India (June 2007), ISM was placed 8th, only next to its IIT-JEE league and BITS Pilani.

Profile

Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad was established in the year 1926. ISM Dhanbad is one of the premier engineering institutions of India. The origin of ISM Dhanbad can be traced to 1901 when the Indian Mines Act came into place. A need was felt to establish a government college of Mining Engineering at some suitable place in India on the pattern of the Royal School of Mines.

The Government of India in 1920 decided that the proposed institution should be an All India Institution financed by the Central Government and be named Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. In 1996-97, ISM Dhanbad was granted the status of Deemed University under the UGC Act in 1967. Indian School of Mines University Dhanbad is spread over a campus of 88 hectares and offers several courses at the UG as well as PG level in the engineering field.

History

After the enactment of Indian Mines Act of 1901, the need for a government college for Mining Engineering was felt by the Indian Government. The Indian National Congress in its Calcutta session of 1901 also endorsed this idea. A committee of experts under the chairmanship of MacPherson, the then Chief Secretary of Bihar and Orissa was formed to study the system of mining education in Europe, especially England. On the basis of the report submitted by the committee, the Indian Government, in 1920, decided to establish a national institute for mining education, fully funded by Central Government, in Dhanbad.

Indian School of Mines was formally inaugurated by His Excellency, then the Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin on 9th December, 1926 as the first Mineral Technology Institute in the country on the model of the Royal School of Mines,London. From the very day of its inception, ISM has had a national character and outlook, with intake of students from all over the country.

The institute initially offered courses in Department of Mining Engineering, Applied Geology, Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry and Applied Mathematics and was known as Indian School of Mines. In 1957, the institute began offering two additional courses Petroleum Engineering (by the recommendation of Jawaharlal Nehru-Prime Minister of India) and Applied Geophysics. The institute was granted University status under the UGC Act in 1967. Later courses in Mining Machinery Engineering and Mineral Engineering were started in 1975 and 1976 respectively.

It was among the few institutes to start courses in Industrial Engineering & Management way back in 1977, to cater to the needs of Industries like Metallurgy, Mining & Manufacturing.

In 1997, the institute began admitting students through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Institute of Technology - BHU and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. In 1998 courses for Electronics Engineering and Computer Science were introduced and in 1999 Mechanical Engineering.

In 2006, ISM started offering as many as 14 new courses, prominent among them being Electrical Engineering and a unique course in Environmental Engineering in the undergraduate curriculum. ISM also started integrated Graduate engineering and management courses in Mining, Mineral and Petroleum engineering, anticipating a growing need for such graduates. This was the first such course offered by any technical institution in India.

Campus

Indian School of Mines (ISM) is located in the heart of the country's prime coking coal belt at Dhanbad, 260 km away from Kolkata on Howrah-New Delhi Grand Chord Railway route. The campus is spread over 88 hectares (220 acres).

The Main Building of ISM houses the following five departments of the institute: Mining Engineering, Applied Geology, Petroleum Engineering Applied Geophysics and Electrical Engineering. A committee consisting of mining experts under the Chairmanship of Macpherson, the Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar and Orissa was formed to study the system of mining education in England. The report of this committee was the main basis for establishment of Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad. The Government of India in 1920 decided that the proposed institution should be an All India Institution financed by the Central Government and be named Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. The Indian School of Mines was formally opened by his Excellency The Vice Roy Lord Erwin on 9th. December, 1926.
