The premises near Nirma University will boast of some premier technology to aide the ATS in their operations, if sources in the squad are to be believed. The new premises, located on four acre land adjacent to the varsity, is being touted as the first-ever ATS office to incorporate such state-of-the-art technology. The office will be ready in two months, according to the source.
The source said the premises will house three main buildings - one each for the operations group, administration department and training centre. There will also be an advanced technology-equipped technical cell as well as an indoor firing range, apart from a canteen.According to the source, the present premises of the of the ATS at Shahibaug is located in a building which is over 30 years old, and lacks any sort of advanced facilities which the squad requires to carry out its operations.

NIRMA students set up permanent legal aid clinic to help prison inmatesAhmedabad: Not everyone is a born criminal and neither is it necessary that those behind bars are hardcore criminals, with no hopes of improving. So believe the students of Institute of Law, Nirma University (ILNU), who set up a permanent Legal Aid Clinic (LAC) at Sabarmati Jail on Saturday.
LAC will provide free legal aid, advice and guidance to inmates of Sabarmati Jail. It will comprise a team of 8-10 people of ILNU students and faculty. In case an inmate is unable to afford a lawyer, a government lawyer free of cost will also be provided , assistant professor and convenor of LAC, Rohit Moonka, said.
This is the first LAC established by any educational institution within the premises of a jail in Gujarat.Prof (Dr) Purvi Pokhariyal, Director I-c ILNU said, LAC will also help, make aware and educate under-trial inmates of Sabarmati Jail about their rights and duties thereby bridging the gap between them and our law. Nirma Univ to be nodal agency for green bldgsAhmedabad: Nirma University (NU) is likely to be the nodal agency for training faculties of civil engineering institutes across the state for green construction, said HOD of the civil engineering department, NU Institute of Technology (NUIT), Dr Paresh H Shah who has recently compiled a booklet on green buildings.
Dr Shah said, Owing to workshops we have held on green ratings, certifications and the green building concept and construction, it was suggested that we become the nodal agency. However, talks are still on with ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). In 2007, we had organised a national seminar on advances in building management systems where one of the themes covered was green buildings. For this seminar, besides, MNRE and TERI, Gujarat Council of Science and Technology (GUJCOST) also took part. It was their advisor, Dr AM Prabhakar, who suggested that we compile a booklet on green buildings. Later, other bodies suggested that we become the nodal agency as well, added Shah. For the compilation of this booklet, NUIT received a grant of Rs3.5 lakh from GUJCOST and work began over a year ago. Dr Shah said, We will be launching 1,000 booklets of 200 pages for the stakeholders of the civil engineering industry such as builders, contractors, material manufacturers, architects, academicians and others.
Two teens killed, 2 hurt in horrific Audi accidentAhmedabad: The Shahpur crossroads that lie on the Koba-Gandhinagar stretch were the scene of a horrific accident involving a high-end luxury car which killed two young men and injured two others in the early hours of Saturday.According to the FIR filed by Anand Kathatiya, a relative of one of the deceased, four youths, Palash Patel, Jarvish Mistry, Jainil Shah and Tarang Amin were travelling in an Audi luxury car when it struck a newly-built speedbreaker on the road and turned turtle. The incident took place around 2.30 am on Saturday.
Palash Patel, 19, a student of Nirma University, who resides in Suryadeep Bungalows at Vastrapur and Jarvish Mistry, the son of Umesh Mistry, director of the Audi Supernova showroom on SG Road, died on the spot.
Amin who is an engineering student from Vadodara and Jainil Shah who is a law student in Delhi, were seated in the rear seat of the car and were taken to Samved Hospital in sector 7 of Gandhinagar where their condition is said to be serious.
The boys were headed to Patels second residence in Gandhinagar when the incident took place. They lost control as they were taken unaware by the newly laid speedbreaker at Shahpur crossroads. The car turned turtle and landed on its roof. It flipped so many times that even the airbags, which inflate in case of accidents in such cars, exploded in the impact. Incidentally, the police are inquiring who the car belongs to. The two boys who died were both only sons of their families.
Nirma University robots to battle it out on BRTS-like trackAhmedabad: The stage is set for the war of the machines. Vidhyut Adhbhutam, the annual festival organised by students of Electrical Engineering, Nirma University, will host a robotics competition, Yantra Mantram, where robots will battle it out on a simulated BRTS track. The track will be created by students of the Electrical Engineering Students Association (EESA) on its campus grounds.
According to Palak Madhwani, president of EESA, This is the first time that we have created something so challenging for our robotics competition. The idea of setting up the Bus Rapid Transit System track struck us while we were travelling in the bus. We decided to create a robotic pick and place competition, but on a track similar to the BRTS one. She said that their BRTS track and rules are modelled on the actual service operating in Ahmedabad. Since it is a robotic pick and place event, participants have to build their robots as per requirements of the track.Madhwani, explaining about the requirements, said, The robot should fit within a box of dimensions 300x300x300mm and can be either wired or wireless. However, in case it is wireless, it should have a dual frequency remote. A maximum of 24V DC power supply is permitted. And most importantly, robots have to be battery operated. The approximate size of the BRTS track will be 8x8 square metres.
At the same time, the track would have five stations. The robot has to pick up a passenger from one station and drop it off at the next station.
