Vission And Mission

Mission
To globally strengthen, sustain and professionalise business knowledge through creative research and teaching and learning and by integrating with organisations, institutions and universities both within and beyond national boundary.

VISION
An internationally acknowledged and networked institution in delivering globally competitive business education and research for individuals, corporates, government and society.

Director of Profile

IIFT was set up in 1963 by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, and during the past forty four years has made significant contributions towards building professional skills of management focusing on international business. Rapid strides have been made by the Institute in achieving its mission to strengthen, sustain and professionalise business knowledge through creative research and teaching and learning and by integrating with organizations, institutions and universities both within and beyond national boundaries. It is a matter of pride for all of us that the IIFT is being constantly ranked as one of the TOP TEN BUSINESS SCHOOLS of the country by different B-School Surveys in the past few years. It is in acknowledgement of these impressive achievements that IIFT was awarded the status of Deemed University in May 2002 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. F.9-31/2001-U.3 of the Government of India and accredited as 'A' Grade institution by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in May 2005

IIFT stands apart from other institutions on many counts. It is the only Institute of its kind in the country which provides Management Education with in-depth global focus. The course curriculum offered at IIFT consists of core papers like international business strategy, international marketing research, international trade operations, etc. that reflect the concepts & trends in international business. Such courses are otherwise offered as electives by other institutes. We are witnessing rapid changes in the context of increasing globalisation & multilateralism in trade. An understanding of these international developments and capacity to analyse & respond to such changes are some of the capabilities that are inculcated in the students.

We have taken a number of steps to ensure that the curriculum of different programmes is updated on a regular basis to reflect the fast-changing concepts and trends in International Business. The process includes indepth external reviews of the course structure and course details by eminent management education experts. In addition, the course details that are prepared by a faculty member are reviewed internally within the discipline groups on a regular basis before each trimester/semester. The discipline groups also invite two/three outside experts in their area and arrange micro-level external validation of the course contents. We have been inviting external faculty from the eminent management institutions within the country and outside for teaching specific courses. These strategies have helped in continuous updating of our course structures to reflect the dynamic changes in management education.

Another area we have given attention is the large number of electives that are offered to students. The number has nearly doubled in the last couple of years and this helps students to go for the specialization that they want as they have a very wide choice from which to select their electives.

The Institute has also been engaged with high caliber training organized in the form of various Management Development Programmes. These programmes are sponsored by national and international organizations. IIFT has emerged as the nodal Institute for conducting training programmes on WTO related issues for Government of India, state governments and Industry. The focus has shifted from export procedures to areas such as IT and E-commerce, Currency Values, Risk Management in Exports & Imports and Foreign Trade Policy. Similarly, IIFT has conducted a number of research studies for both national and international organizations in the government and private sectors on emerging policy issues.

As we strive for excellence in what we do, the Institute is constantly making endeavours to scale new heights by developing synergy between graduate studies, research programmes and short-term training activities. Such a holistic approach would contribute towards continuous growth of the Institute.

A youthful movement

It is not possible for us to cut off our electricity connections, stop using mechanised transport and go live in caves.

But we do need to conserve energy and reduce global warming, if not for the planet, then for the generations that are yet to be born. Scientists and the younger generation thus continue their search for energy efficiency and ways to reduce global warming.

A great example of using sustainable green energy was recently demonstrated by a group of students who proposed recovering methane from cattle waste and using it for power generation. The event was the fourth annual Al Gore Sustainable Technology Venture Competition for MBA and engineering students in India, which was organised by The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and the Foundation for a Sustainable Future (FSF), San Francisco. The idea behind the competition was to bring into focus new sustainable technologies through entrepreneurship, especially amongst the youth.

The winners were the 0% Angles from the Christ University Institute of Management, Bengaluru who won for their plan on the Recovery of methane from cattle waste... The runners-up were the Green Geeks from IIFT Delhi, who presented a proposal on Solar photovoltaic based devices...

The teams that won cash awards of Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 70,000 respectively will now participate in the March 2011 Sustainable Track Global Competition hosted by the Tepper School, Carnegie Mellon University.

Says IIFT Director K.T. Chacko, The finalists will now get an opportunity to interact directly with top-tier venture capitalists and entrepreneurs in the US who can help turn their plans into reality.

One persons waste is anothers input, maintains 0% Angles, whose project plan is based on the conversion of methane-rich manure into a revenue-generating business model of selling compost and electricity. The purpose is to promote sustainable development and improve the ecosystem by capturing harmful methane, which is 21 times worse than carbon dioxide at global warming.

The team members, Iwin Emmanual, Johnson Job, Ranjit Radhakrishnan and Sachin Kondath, believe that the project provides completeness and value addition to the efforts of the food industry and to society in handling an issue like manure. Our nations energy consumption rate is considered to be one of the fastest in the world due to high economic growth rates and a rising population. We feel our business plan will be able to address this energy shortage in an eco-friendly manner, they say.

The Green Geeks Sunrise Ventures, meanwhile believe that solar power is the way to go, team members Rohit Mittal, Amit Mittal, Sudeep Deb and Anurag Ranjan aim to promote the use of solar power in India. The project plans to have an assembly line of solar photovoltaic devices in the first phase, for common homes, along with commercial power applications such as home lighting and street lighting systems, they say.

Essentially, the devices will be kept under sunlight so that the batteries can be charged and used at night. These devices can be used as emergency power devices in semi-urban areas and for normal use in areas without grid connectivity. In the later phases, the project plans to leverage technical advancements and produce electricity at par with thermal power in terms of cost.

IIFT: World wide web of management

A catalyst for new ideas and an institution that gives you a global perspective, is how Varun Sharma describes the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT). A second-year student of the MBA programme in international business (IB) Sharma takes pride in being part of an institute which gives one
a corporate feel. A chance to grab lessons in finance, marketing and trade with an international perspective is another aspect that attracted Sharma to the 48-year-old IIFT. About his programme, Sharma says, We are exposed to the global perspectives by studying subjects such as international marketing, international finance, international strategy and international brand management.

IIFTs industry interface happens through seminars, conferences, corporate interactions and guest lectures. Corporate interactions are held regularly, equipping one with the relevant skills and enhance the acumen required to think like visionaries. These visits are organised by the corporate relations committee of the institute.
Live projects, a social awareness programme, symposia, cultural events, community service activities, sports and different club activities also form an integral part of the curricula, says Sharma.

Whats interesting is that the curriculum is revised and refurbished by management education experts and corporate honchos to ensure it reflects the dynamics of an evolving business world. Programmes in international business and industrial marketing are examples of IIFTs diverse portfolio of courses that sharpen the skill sets of aspiring business executives and mid-career professionals. Learning at the beautiful in the lush Qutab Institutional Area with hangouts such as the Top of the World is an unforgettable experience. Be it planning how to crack the exams or preparing for upcoming fests, the students cant think of a better place than the Top of the World.

The library is another zone which encourages a healthy exchange of ideas. Housing around 84,000 volumes and subscriptions to 800 journals with complete online cataloguing, the IIFT library is a treasure trove of information. An ideal space for industry, research scholars and students alike, it has a unique collection of publications of FAO, IMF, OECD, UNCTAD, UNCTC, World Bank, and other international agencies.

Another aspect that sets IIFT apart from others is the range of courses. Courses range from six-month duration to three years and a number of the programmes can be pursued online as well, says Pinaki Dasgupta, associate professor of marketing at IIFT.

Co-curricular activities at IIFT include events conducted by clubs such as Cashonova (finance club), Brandwagon (marketing club), Blash (trading club), Socrates (consulting club) and Systemix (business technology and telecom club). Their functioning is coordinated by the apex student body of IIFT, the International Management Forum, popularly known as the IMF.

The institute also has its own quiz club, Quintessential. The CSR club Koshish was established to nurture socially-conscious business leaders.
