Profile of Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology

Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology came into existence in the year 2001. At the time of inception three B.Tech. Programmes in the areas of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Information Technology were introduced. Subsequently, B.Tech. programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and M.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were added. Table gives an account of various programmes being run by the Institute and their dates of introduction.

Department of Applied Science
The Department of Applied Sciences is actively pursuing technical teaching embracing both basic and applied areas of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Communication skills . The Department has a vibrant atmosphere backed up with experienced faculty having an experience of more than thirty years mingled with a highly dedicated young staff working with a kinetic vigor , fulfilling the requisite technical needs of this techno savvy world , by adding budding technocrats with a futuristic vision of grooming many technical giants.

Engineering Physics Lab:
The Engineering Physics Lab primarily focuses to create a strong interest in and aptitude for science and mathematics and desire to apply these to technical problems without regard to formal or historical boundaries between various fields of engineering and physics. It allows the students to extend themselves and to develop broad skills in the physical sciences. The primary emphasis is to foster mastery in areas of basic physics and related practical physics which have in the past proven of universal importance. The lab is oriented to provide excellence in physics – particularly developing the capability to do physics rather than just awareness and knowledge of physics – to a practicing scientist or engineer, in particular in pushing the forefront of an engineering area. An important aspect of this excellence is the development of experimental skills to complement the formal coursework. In short, Engineering Physics Lab is an apprenticeship on the broadest and most fundamental level for a career in engineering, the basic sciences, or any discipline requiring technical training.

Engineering Chemistry Lab
Our Chemistry lab is well-equipped with latest Chemicals, equipments and apparatus to conduct various experiments in Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry as per P.T.U. norms. Chemicals and glassware are kept separately in cup-boards. For the convenience of the students, Laboratory-manuals are regularly displayed on the Laboratory Notice Board. Sufficient apparatus and equipments are available to minimize the number of groups of students performing the particular experiment. Sufficient Faculty, Technical staff and staff members are available to give individual attention to the students. Major equipments required as per PTU syllabus is available , these include Redwood viscometers, Conductometers, pH-meters, Muffle-furnace, Electric-oven, Fire and Flash apparatus, Electric water bath, Single pan balance etc.

Communication Skills Lab:
Communication skills lab has the area of 120 sq.feet as per requirements of AICTE norms. It has required Audio-Visual Aids and soft wares on speaking and writing skills. Communication skills lab attempts to study the attitudinal factors that make a good communicator and links them with the skills that help a student communicate efficiency. It focuses writing, technical writing, listening and speaking skills, but in the context of body language, mind mapping, creativity, team spirit, interpersonal and interpersonal and negotiation skills and so on. Especially this lab aims at developing the communication skills of Engineering students and in- house professionals. For this target, good communication skills are a necessary qualifications for recruitment, growth and professional effectiveness. In the highly competitive scene in the country, students with effective skills in addition to subject knowledge have an immense advantage over offers lacking similar skills. Further, in the corporate world of today, being a successful professional demands effective management and communication skills.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Department of Computer Science Engineering and IT were established in the year 2001. Initially the intake of students in CSE and IT were 60 and 60 . In 2004 the intake of students in CSE was increased to 90 and later in the year 2007 it has been to 120. Department is also running M.Tech(CSE) Full Time course duly approved by AICTE with an intake of 18 students . There has been a rapid growth in the infrastructure of the department since 2001 and there has been no looking back. Today department can boast of one of the best computing facility in the region. The department of CSE and IT is ISO 9001 2000 certified.The department has produced quality computer professionals. Department feels proud of its alumni employed in Public, Private and Educational sectors bringing good name to their alma mater.

The whole team of Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology Department is working with a sense of responsibility and dedication to excel and achieve success in this era of Computer Science. The department of CSE and IT offers a comprehensive curriculum from introductory level courses to graduate seminars and projects focusing on critical research areas. Students find a unique set of opportunities available to study for the B.Tech as well as M.Tech. programs. Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering
The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established in the institute in July 2001 with an intake of 60 students in B. Tech. Electronics and Communication Engineering Programme. The intake increased to 90 students in July 2002 and 120 in July 2004. Subsequently, M. Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering was introduced in July 2008 with a sanctioned intake of 18. The department has highly qualified and dedicated faculty. HOD has wide experience in research and development.

Many faculty members are pursuing higher studies and at least three faculty members will get their Ph. D. degrees in next two to three years. The department is equipped with well designed laboratories for practical training and to strengthen teaching-learning processes. All this has resulted in almost 100% placements of eligible students in the reputed companies.

One of the student project titled Automated Guided Vehicle was given AICTE award sponsored by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib during Indian Society Convention held at Hamirpur in 2008.

The department has recently executed a DRDO sponsored project titled as Sub pixel snow temperature mapping using MODIS image data . The department can boast of its excellent infrastructure which is continuously being updated to keep pace with the national scenario.

Labs at ECE department are equipped with well-quality equipments. Experiments are performed under the guidance of expert teachers and Lab technicians. Instruction manuals are available for all the experiments. Labs and Workshops are clean and are user-friendly.

Since its inception, graduating students have been well placed in either deemed academic institutions or top industrial establishments in the country and abroad. The foremost objective of the department is to hone technical skills demanded by todays engineering professionals by providing a sound technical platform and the required knowledge base.

With a competent qualified faculty, a Mechanical Engineering education at R.I.E.I.T is more than classroom lectures. Laboratory experiences conducted in a well-maintained facility give the student a hands-on approach in the use of engineering principles and the opportunity to develop creative approaches to problems. The Mechanical Engineering student with a desire to learn will develop and expand his or her knowledge and skills in the areas of engineering sciences, testing techniques, material properties, analysis and evaluation along with communication. The available equipment, excellence in instruction and an emphasis on quality of education in Mechanical Engineering combine to prepare the student to step into positions of responsibility at the leading edge of todays technology.

The Department offers 04 - years B.Tech. and 02 - years M.Tech. Programmes duly approved by AICTE. Central Library occupies a place of pride in Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology and is an essential component of the institutes outstanding education mission. It is a most lively place on the campus providing a safe, comfortable and friendly environment that enables learning and advancement of knowledge, and promotes discovery and scholarship. The mission of the Central Library is to facilitate creation of new knowledge through acquisition, organization and dissemination of knowledge resources and providing for value added services. Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information technology has a well established library which caters to the need of the students, research scholars and the faculty. The library functions on an open access system for the faculty, research scholars and students as it is automated with a wide collection of the latest books, periodicals and CDs.. A combination of online and offline information resources are offered and designed to provide a holistic and comprehensive service. The library offers photocopying facilities also. There is a computer based catalogue system that provides information on the availability of books, journals and other materials.

The Library uses Libsoft software package which is an integrated multi-user library management system that supports all in-house operations of the Library. The Libsoft consists of modules on acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serials, and OPAC. The database of books available in the Library is being updated on day to day basis with details of recently acquired books. Records of all the Library patrons have also been created in the Libsoft package.

About the Department
Sports Department of Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, Railmajra Distt. SBS Nagar was established in 2001. Under my guidance many students won National/International level medals. Many university level tournaments were well-organized by our college and many more steps will be undertaken by college for better performance of Rayat sportspersons. Hope we do well in future.
Practice as if you are the worst; perform as if you are the best.
Games &sports have been an integral part of our academia, hence we have in our Institute a 400mtr standard track and football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts, alongwith arrangement of flood lights, thereby enabling the students to play at night time also. It is an honor to state that the following students brought name and fame to the institute by winning various prizes at international, national level and all India Inter University level Tournaments.

NSS Activities
NSS Unit: National Service Scheme unit of Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology was started in the academic year 2003-2004 as a student youth service programme. NSS unit aims at arousing a social consciousness of the youth with an overall objective of personality development of the students through community service. To seek the above objective, 100 student volunteers are enrolled for every two years under a Faculty incharge called NSS Programme officer. The NSS unit has to report the yearly progress and activities to NSS Coordinator, Govt. of India.

5th Voluntary Blood Donation Camp: Blood donors are quiet heroes

The 5th Voluntary Blood Donation Camp was held on 9th March, 2010 at the Rayat Technology centre of Excellence Rail Majra.
Sh. Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal, IAS, SDM Balachaur graced the occasion and inaugurated the camp.

Campus Director Prof. S. C. Bedi with all Directors /Principals of other Institutes of the campus were also present.
Vice-Chairman of the Trust S. Gurvinder Singh Bahra was too gracious to have taken time out of his very busy schedule to encourage the students and staff for participating in a noble and humane endeavor.
295 units of blood were collected. ; However there was no shortage of donors. Many donors had to be politely refused.
The response to blood donation camp was unprecedented. Since many donors had to be sent back .It has been decided that hence forth the future blood donation camps will be of two days instead of one.
The total commitment of the Trust Management, towards the larger benefit of the society and value based education was once again reaffirmed in no uncertain terms.

Cultural Committee
The Cultural Committee, formerly known as the Music/Dance/Dramatics Club came into Existence in the Year 2005 with a view to Extend the area of Development of the Students Culturally.

The Indian Society for Technical Education is a national, professional, non-profit making Society registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. First started in 1941 as the Association of Principals of Technical Institutions (APTI), it was converted into Indian Society for Technical Education in 1968 with a view to enlarge its activities to advance the cause of technological education.

The major objective of the ISTE is to assist and contribute in the production and development of top quality professional engineers and technicians needed by the industries and other organizations.
Being the only national organization of educators in the field of Engineering and Technology, ISTE effectively contributes in various missions of the Union Government. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, AICTE/DST/MIT/State Govts. are well associated with the ISTE for programmes relating to technical education.

The students of Rayat College of Law participated in Zonal Youth Festival of Panjab University, Chandigarh (Hoshiarpur Zone A) held at M.B.B.G.G.G. Girls College, Rattewal. Parneet Kaur, student of B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) 5 year 3rd semester secured first position in Essay Writing Competition. Anjali Khosla student of B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) 5 year 9th semester secured second position in Debate Competition. The student of B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) 5 year 5th semester, Amandeep Singh Parmar got second Prize in Elocution.

Moot Courts
Students of Rayat Law College have been regularly participating in various Intra-College as well as Inter-College Moot Court competition.

Ajay Pal Singh, Harish Mehla, B.A.LL.B. 5year 9th Sem., and Abhinav Jain, LL.B. 3rd Year 3rd Sem represented Rayat College of Law in the esteemed 8th Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition held at New Delhi (Sep 11-14, 2008).The Competition comprised of an eye popping 63 teams from all over India. The Competition was organised by Indian Society for International Law and International Committee for Red Cross.

Abhinav Jain, LL.B. 3rd Year 2nd Sem., Harish Mehla, B.A.LL.B. 5year 8th Sem., Ajaypal Singh Saini, B.A.LL.B. 5year 8th Sem. represented the Rayat College of Law at the National Moot Court Competition at Nagpur which was orgainsed by G. H. Raisoni Law School on 22nd Feb-25th Feb, 2008 and managed to get in finals out of 28 teams of different Legal Institutes of different parts of country.

Harsimar Singh Sitta, B.A.LL.B. 5year 8th Sem., Gurpreet Singh Aulakh, B.A.LL.B. 5year 6th Sem., Parneet Kaur Sindhu, B.A.LL.B. 5year 2nd Sem. represented the Rayat College of Law at 7th Amity National Moot Court Competition at Noida which was orgainsed by Amity Law School on 7th March-9th March, 2008.

Ankit Dhiman, B.A.LL.B. 5year 2nd Sem., Amisha Vohra, B.A.LL.B. 5year 2nd Sem., Shruti Singh, B.A.LL.B. 5year 1st Sem. represented the Rayat College of Law at Surana and Surana Corporate Law Moot Court Competition which was orgainsed by Army Institute of Law Mohali on 8th Feb.-10th Feb., 2008.

Rayat College of Law had organized its Ist National Consumer Moot Court Competition on March 2006. As many as 32 teams from various law institutes throughout the country. The participating teams include Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi , Law School , Benaras Hindu University (BHU), Amity Law School, Delhi, University Institute of Legal Education, Jammu , J.C. College of Law, Mumbai, University School of Law, Kurukshetra, Army Institute of Law. S.A.S. Nagar and Law Department, PU, Chandigarh.

The competition was organized by the Consumer Court Bar Association, Chandigarh , in association with the Rayat College of Law Ropar. This was organized in the run-up to the celebrations of World Consumer Day which fall on March 15. According to Consumer Court Bar Association president Pankaj Chandgothia, this will be the first of a series of competitions to be organized annually. The winners, Institute of Law , Kurukshetra University had been awarded the Piara Lal Rukmani Devi running trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.The runners-up team got a trophy plus a cash prize of Rs. 8,000. The team that won the third position was awarded special citation with a cash prize of Rs. 5,000, while the best memorial (paper-book) submitted by any individual contestant win Rs. 3,500 in cash. The unique feature of this competition was that the Judges panel comprised of sitting or former presidents of State Consumer Commissions, thus giving the competitors a real and live experience of actual Consumer Courts.

Rayat College of Law had organized its IInd National Consumer Moot Court Competition on March 2007. Jamia Millia Islamia University , New Delhi , bagged the top prizes in the two-day National Consumer Law Moot Court Competition. The second prize went to the Institute of Law and Management Studies, Gurgaon. Ms. Sowmyn Suman of Jamia Millia Islamia University was adjudged the best mooter in the competition. The university also bagged the Best Memorial Award.
The event concluded with a valedictory address by Justice Rajive Bhalla of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who exhorted the young law students to exercise utmost honesty, sincerity and righteousness in their conduct and practice of law as a profession. Mr. Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Vice-chairman of Rayat and Bahra Group, said not only the winner, every young law student who participated walked back with a bagful of exposure and experience.

Rayat College of Law and Asia Pacific Jurist Association (APJA) jointly organized a seminar on Environment Protection and Sustainable Development . Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court along with twelve sitting Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court were present on the occasion. Mr. Justice Vijender Jain Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court has said environment protection agenda was a key and in separable part to the concept of sustainable development.
Stressing the Importance of environment protection in the context of sustainable development, Justice Jain, who is also president of APJA, explained that principles like polluter pays and doctrines of public trust to protect environment are the guiding rules to affect the attitudinal and mindset changes. The Chief Justice lauded the efforts of higher judiciary in living up to its rightful duty of protecting environment and helping make society responsive to the demands of environmental conservation. While appreciating the role of Rayat College of Law in its sincere endeavor to sensitise people through this seminar, Justice Jain called upon the society to take the call for awakening as regards to environment protection.

While presiding over the function, Justice Surya Kant, who is president of APJA ( Punjab and Haryana Chapter), informed about the active role being played by APJA in promotion of environmental protection. In his keynote address, Justice Rajive Bhalla highlighted the importance of wildlife protection while Chief Conservator Forests (Hills) Jatinder Sharma and Divisional Forest Officer D. Raj Shekar shared their insights into the broader issue of environment conservation. Atul Lakhanpal, secretary general, APJA (Punjab and Haryana Chapter), Prof. P.S. Jaswal Director Rayat College of Law, Prof. R.K. Kohli of Panjab University, Chandigarh .and Prof. A. D. Ahluwalia also spoke on the occasion. In the modern competitive corporate world, when the business houses are expanding their wings over the Global Nest, need arises to produce a quality talent pool which possesses the skill set and the caliber to match the requirements of the employers.

A student graduating with a professional qualification has many expectations in terms of a good job, learning atmosphere, work environment and above all the remuneration. The dream with which he takes up a specific qualification cannot be fulfilled unless and until the student is equipped with the desired skill set which is required in the relevant field. This creates a gap between the academia and the industry. The endeavor thus remains to make the student employable in addition to evolving his skill set.

Keeping in mind this urgent need of industry, Rayat Bahra Group has initiated a Comprehensive Training Program which aims at preparing every student to be the best human resource available. The programmes objective is to make our talent pool ready to be deployed.

Besides inviting Top MNCs and Corporate houses for Campus Placements, Department of Career Development and Placements (DOCDP) is taking some of the path breaking initiatives to not only place the student but to ensure the overall development of their Technical, Communication and Soft skills, spanning their complete stay at campus, enhancing vocational skills based on Industry requirements, Curriculum Development, Trends and establishing close working relationship with the leading business and industry organizations.

At Rayat and Bahra we help the student to explore his potentials through these innovative methodologies, which is a very unconventional tactic to break the classroom monotony. Through these key tools we aim at generating affectivity and achieving result oriented targets for our students. Special Expert sessions for students delivered by Company Officials, which give a deep insight into the core industrial concepts, latest developments and technologies in use. In addition to this direct practical on the work place and exposure is provided with the help of Industrial visits.

Rayat and Bahra understands the need for technology skills in the market. In order to bridge this gap between the academia and the industry, Rayat and Bahra has collaborated with top IT giants in the market to evolve our students as pool of trained manpower ready to deploy in the market as per the industry needs. Keeping this picture in mind the following industry giants have adopted the Engineering students right from the entry level and are trained over 4 years along with their academic sessions.

Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology came into existence in the year 2001. At the time of inception three B.Tech. Programmes in the areas of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Information Technology were introduced. Subsequently, B.Tech. programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and M.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were added. Table gives an account of various programmes being run by the Institute and their dates of introduction.

* Ashita Sharma (ECE, 8th Sem) - I am glad to be a part of this institution which has helped me to stand up on my feet and proudly announce myself as a part of Panasonic. I owe a lot to all my Mentors in the Training and Placement Cell and whom Ive seen working day and night solely for us.
* Hitesh Gupta (ECE, 4th Sem) – No Dish tastes good until its cooked completely on fire. Besides our academics and bookish knowledge, we should also know how to present that knowledge. The Campus Connect program by Infosys gives the feeling of completeness. The Creative Teaching techniques, fun filled classes and above all eye opening facts are very useful to me.
* Kunal Dhiman (M.Pharma – Chemistry, 2nd Year) – The Sessions conducted by Training team are very useful and help me in gaining confidence and awareness.
* Munish (MBA, 2nd Sem) - Our colleges Training and Placement Cell is one of the best placement cell among all the colleges. The team is very supportive and enthusiastic and takes genuine pain to place the students in the best possible companies with best salary packages in the market.
* Harish Verma (CSE, Polytechnic) – Before attending the soft skills class, my confidence in communication skills was not good, but after attending soft skills class, I have gained confidence and have found a great improvement in my personality. With these trainings, I got selected in good organizations.
* Manmeet Singh (ECE, 8th Sem) - I consider myself lucky to be a part of such an institution which has such a well developed and a hard working Training and Placement Cell. I am really grateful to them for Training me according to the company needs, thanks to which, I am placed with an organization like Panasonic.
* Ritika Sharma (IT, 4th Sem) – The Training and Placement cell of our college is one of the best placement cell. Every year more than 80-85 % students are placed in best companies. The Training and Placement Deptt. provides best opportunities for jobs. Every year good number of companies come up with excellent remuneration packages.
* Vikrant Vashisht (M.Pharma, Pharmaceutics 2nd year) – It is a great feeling that Rayat-Bahra Group is organizing such career development programs and placement drives. This helps in making my future more bright and giving me good exposure.
* Gurwinder (HM, 4th year) – The Training and Placement Deptt. of our college has been conducting trainings in a very professional way, to help the students get placed in international companies. We are grateful to the members of the Placement cell as they are very professional and co-operative.

There are two hostels for girls within the campus. Each hostel has an activity centre, common room, reading room, dinning room with mess, canteen till late hours and other basic amenities like hot water supply in winter. Two new hostels are under construction to provide in house residential facilities to the aspiring students.

Hostel Rules
* Students are not permitted to stay outside the hostel beyond the timings given below without written permission from the warden.
* All students are expected to preserve the hostel property. In case of damage, student is liable to face disciplinary action in addition to recovery of the damage caused to the property.
* The students will maintain perfect discipline in the hostel.
* Meal timings shall be followed.
* No outsider is permitted to enter the hostel without permission of the warden.
* Use of Room heater/Water heater/electric iron, and hotplate etc. are not allowed in the rooms.
* Playing of stereo, TV and radio are not permitted other than in the common room.
* Drugs/alcohol is strictly prohibited inside the hostel.
* Before leaving the hostel for overnight absence, girls shall get the movement book signed from the warden and on return deposit the duly signed (parent/guardian) book with the warden

Transport The Campus has a fleet of 5 well-maintained buses, bringing students and staff from all important cities, towns and villages within a radius of 60 Kms.

Medical Care Centre The campus has a well equipped medical center to provide first aid and prompt medical care round the clock. Doctors are available to meet any emergency in the institute or hostel. First aid facility is available in workshop, lab and buses as well.

Shopping Complex There are basic necessity shops in the campus. Stationers shop where students can purchase stationery, toiletries and other necessities. There is a confectionery shop, STD booth, Xerox facility in the campus.
