NAAC report of Vaish Arya Kanya PG MahavidyalayaSection - I - Introduction
Vaish Arya Kanya Mahavidayala, Bahadurgarh, affiliated to Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, was established in 1970 with the laudable aim of providing the young women of this semi-urban area with the opportunity for their all round development through their intellectual, physical, moral and spiritual training so that they could lead a well-balanced and self-reliant life after their education.
The college started with Three-Year-Degree course in Humanities & Social Sciences with English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Political Science, History, Mathematics and Economics as subjects of study. Commerce faculty was introduced in 1987. The college has taken rapid strides in starting many new courses during the last five years. It started Home Science in 1988, B.C.A. in 1999, M.A. English & Political Science in 2001, Physical Education in 2002, M.Com and Psychology, Geography & Physics in 2003.
The college campus is spread over an area of 3 acres and is located in the heart of the town. It has 1090 students enrolled in all the faculties. It has established new laboratories for Physics, Geography and Psychology. The computer department has 7 computers. The college has a well-equipped Home Science laboratory. It has a play ground for the games of Hockey, Kho-kho, Soft ball and concrete courts for Basket ball and Badminton. The college has a library with 9525 books, which is being computerized. The N.S.S. unit of the college is doing a good job by spreading awareness about women problems, health, hygiene and cleanliness and environmental problems.
The college has a staff of 13 permanent teachers. Three of them are Ph.D.,2 M.Phil., 8 are Post-Graduate. It has 17 temporary teachers on its staff. All of them are Post-Graduates in their respective subjects. It has 7 non-teaching employees.
Vaish Arya Kanya Mahavidyalya submitted its self-study report to the National Assessment & Accreditation Council, Bangalore for assessment in December 2002. The Peer Team comprises Prof. K.L.Kamal, Former Vice-Chancellor, Rajasthan University, Jaipur, Rajasthan as Chairperson, Prof. V.Krishnamoorthy, Former Principal, Shri Venkateshwara College, New-Delhi and Prof.. Maninder Singh, Khalsa College, Amritsar, visited the institution on 6th and 7th November, 2003. Dr. Latha Pillai, Advisor, N.A.A.C., ably coordinated the entire programme.
The Peer Team carefully perused and analyzed the self-study report submitted by the institution. It also submitted a supplementary report with details about the new programmes introduced recently. The Peer Team went through the relevant documents, visited all the departments, interacted with the 2 - member officiating team in the absence of the Principal and the Vice-Principal, representatives of the Management, faculty, students, parents and alumni of the institution. Based on the aforesaid exhaustive exercise and bearing in mind the 7-Point assessment criteria identified by the N.A.A.C., the Peer Team has made an objective assessment of the institution and reports as under.
Section II: Criterion -wise Analysis
Criterion I: Curricular Aspects
Vaish Arya Kanya Mahavidyalya, Bahadurgarh is an affiliate of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. The college follows the University syllabus. It offers Under Graduate and Post-Graduate programmes in Humanities, Science and Commerce streames. Faculty of Arts consists of History, Political Science, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Economics, Home Science and Mathematics departments. It has added Physics, Geography and Psychology as new subjects of study at the Under Graduate level in the current year. It has a self-financing course B.C.A. It imparts Post-Graduate teaching in English, Political Science and Commerce.
The college is doing an appreciable work for the empowerment of women as enshrined in its goals and objectives by providing them the benefits of higher education in the latest fields of study such as Information Technology at the Under Graduate level and opening new horizons in a semi-urban area. These goals are periodically reviewed in the wake of the changing global scenario and new courses are added accordingly. The college does not seem to have any mechanism to collect feedback from academic peers.
Criterion II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
The college follows the annual system of examination as per the provisions of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak to which it is affiliated. The college has a transparent admission policy and admits the students mostly on the basis of their academic record. Information about the evaluation methods is provided in the college prospectus. The faculty consists of committed and dedicated teachers. Students' knowledge and skills are tested through regular monthly and quarterly tests. The syllabus is unitized at the beginning of the session as per the schedule. Revision classes are held before the commencement of University examinations for better results. The college worked for 220 days out of which 173 were teaching days last year. The faculty should be provided more opportunities to participate in seminars/conferences for their academic progress and professional advancement.
Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension
The college has not been able to develop research consciousness amongst its faculty. This area needs serious rethinking as the college has already added three Post-Graduate courses to its teaching programmes. Teachers should be motivated and encouraged to approach U.G.C. and other funding agencies for minor and major research projects.
The college has extension activities in areas related to women problems, community development, health and hygiene, clean environment awareness and social work. Teachers motivate students to participate in N.S.S. camps and programmes. N.S.S. unit is actively operative in the college.
Criterion IV: Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The college has a land area of about 3 acres. It has an impressive 2-storey building with 45 good, airy and clean rooms furnished with benches, chairs and tables, newly established laboratories for Physics, Psychology and Geography, and a Computer room, a Home Science laboratory, a library hall, a fully equipped sports room and a spacious ground for athletics and sports activities. A hostel is under construction. The campus is kept neat, clean and green with the help and support of staff and N.S.S. volunteers. The college library has 9525 books and remains open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. It is in the process of computerization . The college also has a small book bank facility to cater to the needy students. It does not subscribe to any research journals which needs to be looked into as the college runs three Post Graduate courses. The college has the provision of first aid facilities for its students and the doctor is available on call.
Section V : Overall Analysis
During their visit to the campus and after the perusal of the self-study report, the Peer Team noted certain academic and co-curricular features which get reflected in the functioning of the college. The Management is forward looking, the faculty is committed. The environment is congenial. The management has encouraging future plans and there exists substantial potential for growth. It is commendable that the local business committee is enthusiastically responding to the societal needs and is particularly concentrating upon this backward area. This linkage between the society and the educational institution is praiseworthy and is a source of inspiration for others. The Peer Team would like to make the following recommendations for the further improvement of the college.
The college may consider starting a few more job-oriented, self-financing courses like 'Dress Designing', 'Functional English', 'Tourism and Hotel Management'.
Teachers of Post-Graduate classes need to develop research culture and orientation, publish articles and go for upgrading of their qualification.
The Post-Graduate departments should organise seminars and conferences, inviting external scholars and resource persons.
The library should remain open for longer hours. It should acquire a photocopying machine.
The library must add research journals and standard critical books for Post-Graduate classes.
The college should appoint a lady doctor to look after the health requirements of the girl students.
The college may also consider having a formal counselling cell for advising students about academic and personal issues.
The college should start N.C.C. for strengthening the co-curricular activities of the college.
The college should strengthen the remedial teaching program in different subjects for disadvantaged students.
As it is the age of computers, computer literacy courses should be encouraged for benefit of the students and the staff.
The college can start music department, it particularly being a girls' college.
Area-specific research should be taken up by the college teachers with a view to linking the institution with the community.
The college should have a perspective plan to help it identify its areas of strengths and weaknesses for launching new courses and identifying appropriate faculty improvement programmes.
The issue of a total ban on the recruitment of teachers since 1996 is to be addressed by the State Govt. as it has resulted in having more temporary than permanent staff. This piquant situation has led to instability in the staff.
The Peer Team places on record its deep sense of gratitude for the hospitality and co-operation extended by the Management and the Faculty.
