NAAC report of Bharati Vidyapeeth Matoshri Bayabai Shripatrao Kadam Kanya Mahavidyalaya (BVMBSKKM)

I. Preface
Bharati Vidyapeeth's Matoshri Bayabai Shripatrao Kadam Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Kadegaon - 415 304, Dist. Sangli (Maharashtra.) B.V.M.B.S.K.K. Mahavidyalaya, Kadegaon, Dist. Sangli was started by the Bharati Vidyapeeth in Kadagaon in the Sangli district of Maharashtra on July 17, 1990 with 101 students and 18 teachers. The main mission of the College was to bring about `Social Transformation Through Dynamic Education'. The College aims at bringing higher education to the doorsteps of girls in the rural hilly areas of Kadegaon. The College is a grant-in-aid institution affiliated to the Shivaji University, Kolhapur. It is located on a campus of 15 acres in beautiful and serene rural surroundings.

Today, this institution which is more than 13 years old has four faculties offering undergraduate programs in Science, Arts, Commerce and Computer Science. It is also offering a self-financing Certificate Course in Computer Applications (CCCA). The College has a total of 42 teachers (30 permanent, 2 temporary and 10 part time). Of the 30 permanent teachers, five have Ph.D., 14 have M.Phil. and 10 have P.G. qualifications. Out of the 10 teachers with PG qualifications, three have already submitted their Ph.D. theses. The number of non-teaching staff is 24 (technical 15 and administrative 9). The total number of undergraduate students is 708. The self-financing Certificate Course in Computer Applications has 14 students. The College is following the annual pattern of academic work. The unit cost of education for the year 2002-03 was Rs. 14, 041/-, while it was Rs. 20, 465/- for the year 2001-02. These unit costs are excluding the self-financing undergraduate course in Computer Science (BCS). The College got UGC recognition under Sections 2f and 12B in June 2003.

The Peer Team consisting of Dr.K.Gopalan (Chairman) and Prof. K. Santhanam (Member Coordinator) visited the College during February 27-28, 2004 for assessing the institution for accreditation primarily on the basis of the self-study report it had submitted to the NAAC in June 2003. The Team had extensive interaction with the management, principal, teachers, staff, students, parents and others concerned. The Team also examined a whole lot of relevant documents.

II Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion I: Curricular Aspects
The College generally follows the curriculum and syllabus prescribed by the Shivaji University for its four three-year integrated undergraduate Courses. The students do not have flexibility in respect of time frame and horizontal mobility.

However, they are given some elective options in selecting subjects in the Arts and Science Faculties. Inter-disciplinary subjects such as Geography of Tourism and History of Social Reforms in Maharashtra are offered by the Arts Faculty. Commerce Faculty does not offer any elective options. Non-core options are not available to the students.

Curricular aspects are taken care of through various Committees. There is remedial coaching for weaker students. Attempts are made to obtain feedback from academic peers and employers in an informal manner. Some teachers are members of the Boards of Studies of the University. The College has established some linkages with some of the institutions/agencies in the neighbourhood mainly through its extension activities.

Criterion II: Teaching-Learning and Evaluation
Students are admitted mainly based on their academic record. Bridge/remedial courses are offered to educationally disadvantaged students. Teachers are encouraged to make teaching plans. Syllabi are unitised according to the teaching schedules. Attempts are made to supplement the lecture method of teaching with activities such as projects, seminars and educational tours. The College does not have any centralised 'media' facility. The teaching aids used include charts, OHPs and CDs. Overall performance of students is monitored mainly through unit tests.

Teachers are recruited as per the norms of UGC, Shivaji University and Maharashtra State Government. The College has the freedom and resources to appoint or pay temporary/ad-hoc teachers. Teachers are allowed to participate in seminars, conferences and refresher courses. Performance of teachers is evaluated through self-appraisal. Some teachers have taken their M.Phil. and Ph.D. while working in the College.

Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension
The College has a Research Committee. Teachers are given study leave for doing MPhil/PhD. A few teachers are engaged in research. Teachers are not given any seed money. The College does not provide any financial support to research students. A couple of teachers have been recognised as guides for Ph.D. The College has completed two minor projects sanctioned by the UGC.

The College does not provide any formal consultancy services. Extension activities are undertaken primarily through the NSS and in collaboration with some of the local GOs and NGOs. Extension activities include programs related to AIDS awareness, adult education ad literacy, blood donation and community enlightenment.

Criterion IV: Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The infrastructure facilities of the College are good and are shared with the Junior College. The physical and academic facilities are also used by external agencies. The campus has been declared as a tobacco-free and plastic-free zone. The library has a collection of 8278 books. It subscribes for six journals and 18 periodicals. It is managed by an Advisory Committee. Some activities of the library have been computerised. The College has a well-equipped hostel consisting of two buildings, which are also shared with the Junior College. The hostel runs its own mess and provides food at concessional rates.

The College has a Computer Centre with 20 computers. In addition, the Science departments have computers of their own. The College has good facilities for indoor and outdoor games/sports. Various incentives are given to outstanding sports persons. The College actively participates in sports meets organised at the university, state and national levels. The College secured the overall first place in the 'Bharati Krida Mahotsav' for the last three consecutive years.

Criterion V: Student Support and Progression
There is no formal mechanism to keep track of the progression of students. About 76% of the students admitted appear for the final university examinations. Some of them go for post-graduate studies. Many of the old students are well employed.

Attempts are being made to collect feedback from students. The College publishes its updated prospectus every year. Students avail of various scholarships and free-ships. Several students get financial aid from various agencies. The College does not have an Employment Cell or a Placement Officer. However, there is a 'Career Guidance Cell'. An Alumni Association has been formed in the year 2002. It is yet to be activated. There are no overseas students in the College. The College does not have any twinning or student exchange programs.

Criterion VI: Organisation and Management
The College has a Local Management Committee. The affairs of the College are coordinated and managed through various Committees such as the Academic Committee, Attendance Committee, Discipline Committee, Examination Committee and Internal Quality Assurance Committee.

The work efficiency of non-teaching staff is checked by the Principal and Vice Principals. Professional development programs for non-teaching staff are con- ducted occasionally. The College has an internal audit mechanism. Audit is carried out at various levels.

The College seems to be running on a deficit budget. Medical facilities for students and staff are arranged at the Bharati Hospital at concessional rates. Various types of loans are made available to the teaching and non-teaching staff.

Criterion VII: Healthy Practices
Several mechanisms are in place for internal quality checks. There is an Internal Quality Assurance Cell. The College does not have any linkages with any national or international agencies. Value based education, civic responsibilities and community orientation are imparted mainly through various NSS and extra-curricular activities.

The College has won the 'Best NSS Unit' Award from the Government of Maharashtra and the Indira Gandhi NSS Award from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government of India. The College organises seminars, workshops and conferences on various topics on a regular basis. .

III Overall Analysis
The Matoshri Bayabai Shripatrao Kadam Kanya Mahavidyalaya in the Sangli district of Maharashtra is more than 13 years old. During this period, it has done very well in achieving its main objective of spreading women's education in the drought-prone area of Kadegaon.

While commending the College for the excellent work it has done, the Peer Team would like to point out that the College has to do a lot more to further improve its quality based on the various criteria prescribed by the NAAC. The expertise and infrastructure facilities available in the College should be put to more and better use. The College should establish meaningful linkages and interact with other institutions and agencies. All the operations in the College should be computerised. More modern methods of teaching and learning using multi-media and such other packages should be adopted. The teaching and non-teaching staff should be enabled to update their skills and competencies on a continuing basis. There should be a mechanism to keep track of the progression of students. The Alumni Association should be activated and involved in the developmental activities of the College.

The Peer Team places on record its appreciation of the tremendous amount of good will and cooperation extended to it by the management, principal, teachers, staff, students, parents and others concerned.
