Students become entrepreneurs

The number of engineering students becoming entrepreneurs has increased in the recent past. Of over 800 students from St. Josephs College of Engineering in the city who were placed in top notch companies this year, about 80 students have become entrepreneurs.

Speaking to this newspaper on Wednesday, Mr B. Babu Manoharan, director of the college, said that over 15 companies had recruited 839 students from the college this year of whom over 10 per cent had turned out to be entrepreneurs.

Over the years we are witnessing this trend and we expect it to continue further. Mostly students pursuing MCA start their own company to develop software. One of our college student - entrepreneurs even developed our website, he said.

Mr Manoharan pointed out that the college had been helping students who wanted to start companies. Whenever a student comes up with an idea to develop an innovative product by starting a company, we take it up with experts in the field. If the professional is satisfied we help the student by guiding him to the funding agencies for necessary funds, he said.

Mr R. B. Vishal, director of Nibav IT Solutions Limited, who is an alumnus of St. Josephs College of Engineering, said that he wanted to become an entrepreneur rather than working for some organisation.

I started Nibav IT Solutions Ltd as a product development company and started to develop Rupee Saver, an account software customised for India. This product is a big success in India in both offline and online versions, he said.

College students win tech contest

St.Josephs college of engineering students in the city share their experience about winning the INAE awards with Babu Manoharan, director of the college on Tuesday. — DC

Three teams from St Josephs College of Engineering in the city have been adjudged winners in the national-level technical project competition conducted by the Indian National Academy for Engineering (INAE).

One of the teams has developed a unique navigational device, which will help fishermen in identifying the countrys maritime boundary, and will help them from not straying into neighbouring nations waters.

The team of two students — Nelson Naveen I. and Princy Perpetua C. developed a maritime border indicator for fishermen, which works on the principle of global positioning system (GPS). Pre-fed location of the international coastal border is programmed into a microchip, which will alert fishermen when they go near the International boundary.

We have developed this at a cost of Rs 2,000 so there is every chance that with the support of the state government, fishermen would fix our gadget, said Nelson.

The gadget has a fuel cut-off mechanism, which will stop the boat from crossing the border, added Princy.

Mr B. Babu Manoharan, director of the college, said that INAE had shortlisted 20 projects of which nine received awards and St Josephs bagged three. We have been encouraging students to develop devices for social purposes, he said.

The other projects that were selected as best projects from the college include a navigation database decoder developed by S. Menaka Mischella and Lasante Christina and a multipurpose air-conditioner built by S. Saravanan.
