Bhonsala College offices attackedNASHIK: Unidentified youths on Sunday ransacked the offices of the Bhonsala Military College and damaged goods worth Rs 7,000. At 1.30pm, the youths entered the college premises, beat up and locked the guard in a room, and broke the latches of offices on campus.
Authorities said equipment worth Rs 7,000 has been damaged, though nothing was stolen. tnnWhile, initial reports suggested no burglary, the Gangapur police are investigating the case further.
Meanwhile, the office administration has said that office equipments worth Rs 7,000 have been damaged in the said incident. The college is run by the Central Hindu Military Education Society.

The Bhonsala Military College, Nashik, Maharashtra is a prominent urban college in Nashik. The special feature of the college is its Department of Defence & Strategic Studies in the faculty of Social Science and its emphasis of on inculcating in the students soldier like discipline and ethical values . The college has a balanced spectrum of subjects, diversified in four faculties .
The college attracts about 12 percent of the students from all over India, in addition to students from Maharashtra .

Student progression in UG is moderate, unit cost of college education is Rs.10,052/- Temporal plan of academic work is annual. The Bhonsala Military College of Nashik requested NAAC to accredit them and has submitted their self-study report. The NAAC Peer Team consisted of Professor Devdas Kakati , former Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University as the Chairman and Dr.Nagappa as member-Convenor, and Dr.Geeta Iyengar , Academic Consultant, NAAC as the coordinating officer. Professor Devdas Kakati and Dr. Nagappa visited the college on 21st and 22nd January 2004. On the basis of the evaluation of the team, the following report is being presented.
Criterion I:- Curricular aspect .
Bhonsala Military College, Rambhoomi Nashik , offers , both P.G and U.G courses in Science, Arts, Commerce and faculty of Mental, Moral and Social Sciences . Some of the courses in Arts and Science allow flexibility in electives with range of programme options. The Pune University designs the courses from time to time for the needs of the society.
The expansion of the college in terms of introduction of new courses is good , which reflects through the courses like, defence studies in BA along with Psychology and in BSc. along with Physics and Chemistry . The college has also taken up
Defence Studies in Arts and Science of Post Graduate Programme . The Science faculty offers 8 subjects , Arts faculty offers 3 subjects , Commerce faculty offers one and faculty of mental Moral and Social Sciences offers 5 subjects . out of these one
Subject like B.Sc and M.Sc. Computer Science are self financing course. For every three years once these courses are reviewed and updated in the University . The college mission and goals defines through the curricula . special curricula for physical training in the realm of preparatory military training. The college will conduct career development activities through specific curriculum for preparation to the competitive examinations like MPSC and UPSC . The college is intent to establish a research center in defence studies. The college is also introducing advanced courses motivating self specialization in specific areas of interests and developments. Few teachers of this college are the members of the Board of Studies and Board of examination and they are giving useful suggestions for curriculum design. This college conducted 10 refresher courses and 15 seminars of national level in Military subject , Physics and Chemistry subjects.
Criterion II Teaching : - Learning and Evaluation .
Admission to the various courses of study is based on their Academic record. The college follows the reservation policy of Maharashtra Govt. The Admission is made after an informal interview. The college is following mechanism to asses the students knowledge and skills through class test , home assignment, group discussion , classroom seminars , personal interviews and asking questions while teaching. The college provides regular remedial courses to academically backward students to improve their performance. There is a provision to give more importance for the merited students by giving special coaching to prepare for UPSC MPSC and Civil Services examinations Students are also educated on pattern of university examination, conduct monthly tests and prefinal examination. The scope of the answers and method of evaluations both in theory and practicals examinations are informed to the students. The college also educate students in communicative and creative skills. They are also enlightened through counseling about the Academic opportunities . There is a provision for awarding prizes and certificates for such students. It is noticed that teachers make annual teaching plan at the beginning of the academic year to handle the class effectively and the same is informed to the students. This enabled teachers to complete the syllabus at proper time. It is observed that the teachers are taking special classes to complete the syllabus. The Principal in the teacher council meeting monitors the same.
The college is conducting UGC sponsoring Refresher Courses. The college is also conducting National seminars on various subjects. Teachers are encouraged to participate in orientation and Refresher Courses. It is observed that the college supplement . The lecture method of teaching is supported with other learner teaching methods by arranging the study tours, Industry visits, conducting viva voce and seminars ; the college provides centralized media facility to prepare audio visuals and other teaching aids in Computer Science department and Botany department . The college follows the annual system of examination for UG and as per University norms for PG . The college has 235 working days and 189 teaching days. The Ratio of full time to part time teachers is 41:02 and Ratio of teaching to non teaching staff 43:58 . The evaluation methods are communicated to the students at the beginning of the year. The college monitors the overall performance of the students through periodical assessments by conducting tests , seminars and home assignments. Teaching and non teaching staffs are appointed by the Bhonsala Military College management. In the case of vacancies Principal is authorized to make appointment of temporary teaching and non teaching staff on contract basis. Temporary appointments are made by the committee after advertising the vacancies of in the news papers. The college has the freedom to appoint part time / contract / Guest lecturers. There are 7 teachers participated in national seminar and 4 teachers participated in the International seminar . The college is following the self appraisal method to evaluate the performance of the faculty in teaching and research. Some teachers have developed teaching modules and additional curricular input to supplement the regular curricular. College has conducted 10 UGC sponsor Refresher Courses of national level and conducted 6 seminars of University level , 10 seminars of state level. Symposia and workshops are conducted in defence and strategic studies in the university level. It is observed that the college has arranged for Guest Lectures in the department of Defence & Strategic Studies and in the department of physics and chemistry . Three teachers are deputed to Ph.D. for higher studies under faculty improvement programme of UGC scheme. One teacher has received 4 awards from local societies . Psychology Department provides counseling and guidance to the students .
Criterion III , Research , consultancy and extension
The main thrust of the college is teaching rather than on research. However the college encourages research in General. The college permits to do their Ph.D. / M.Phil. by taking study leave. The team has found that there is fund allocated for research fellowships .
The college may consider to form a research committee to encourage teachers to take up research work by approaching various fund giving agency like, UGC , CSIR and DST. The department profile reveals that some departments like. Defence & Strategic Studies, Department of Commerce and Department of Psychology are doing active research and there are ongoing projects. These departments have submitted the project proposals to some of the funding agency and waiting for the result . 20 % of the teachers are engaged in active Research in the year 2003. 5 teachers doing their Ph.D. 4 teachers are working on ongoing projects. Two teachers from Commerce department and four teacher from Defence Studies have recognitions as Guide from Pune University . 5 part time teachers registered for their research work . The peer committee observed that there are many external activities of the college, like, community development social work , Health and hygiene awareness , Medical camp , Adult education and literacy , Blood donation camp , AIDS awareness and Environmental awareness. In addition student and staff have participated in most of the activities like Pulse Polio insulation programme. The teaching staff and students have under taken social work in the villages and also in the college. The college has adopted one village in the same Taluka of college and monitored every month by staff and students. The NSS wing arranges camps every year and taken up the programme like removing slit and tillage etc from the tank and laying rural Road with the help of rural youth . Funds for earthquake ; floods victims are collected and donated to the C.M Relief fund. Staff and students visit leprosy home, old age and orphanages and distribute fruit and cloths. The peer team notice that absence of extension cell and hence recommends to start it.
Criterion IV:- Infrastructure and Learning Resources .
The college has serene atmosphere , commodious class rooms and adequate builtup space. It has computer and library facilities with easy access to all its constituencies . The college provides Internet facility and adequate labs for science departments . Both the staff and students are provided free access to the Internet facilities.
The college has adequate Physical facilities to run all its educational programme and administrative activities effectively .
The college provides adequate infrastructure to the students of UG and PG courses during the day time. The institute has a functional administrative structure. The Principal instructs the various working class to carry out their work without obstruction to the regular practical, class meetings etc. The fund needed for these activities are met through Bhonsala Management Nashik.
The college has well maintained campus located in heart of the Nashik city. Because it is Military College the students are well disciplined and well behaved. Aforestation is taken by the NSS and NCC students to maintain the ecological balance.
The college library has one advisory committee and also book bank facility. The total No of books available are 11500 ; The library receives 5 Journals and 33 periodicals . In addition to this the library consists of Reprography , computers , Audio and Video cassettes and Internet. The library woks on all working days for 9 hours . The library has Pentium III systems of computer along with one printer and all necessary softwares facility. Many departments have computer facilities . The central computer facility helps the teachers in preparing their lessons , browsing , down loading etc. The admission , examination and other office works are computerized and required software is developed initially. Maintenance of computers is given to a private firm on mou .The college is having central Internet.
The college provides health center with part time doctor and administrative staff. Medical checkup of the students is done regularly. The center provides the facility for students for minor illness and enquires. qualified medical assistance is available round the clock on the campus.
The college provides basic facilities needed for sports utilizing play ground available in their campus. Out door facilities like , Volley Ball, Basket ball , Foot ball, Hand ball , Table tennis , Lawn Tennis , Multi Gym station, swimming tank , filter plant, Riding Ground , Firing Range, Obstacle Course , Hockey Goal, Boat set , Soft Ball set , Judo Mats ,Crickets . In addition to the above facilities of sports the college provides 400 M. running track .The college provided TA and DA to the students participating in various events when they go for Intercollegiate sports competitions. The college provides track suites to the out standing students. About 180 students participated in 84 intercollegiate sports event and 35 students in national level sports event. One student participated in International level . The college have indoor facilities like Table Tennis , Exercise Cycle, Weight Lifting Set , Trade mill etc. The college is having 4 boys hostels and one girls hostel.
Criterion V :- student support and progression .
The college publishes its prospectus every year with details about the courses offered , combination of the subjects , media of the courses , disability criterion and various sources of financial assistance to students . Admission of students is as per university guidelines . 90 % of students appear for the qualifying examinations and outs of 10% dropouts About 40 % of the students go for higher studies . Many of these students have occupied prominent positions in army and other civil services positions . The teachers of this college guide the students to appear for competitive examinations like UPSC and Bank recruitment . After passing these examinations they have occupied various positions in the country and abroad. One student passed the UGC NET examination and 6 students passed the SLET examination . One student from chemistry department passed the Gate examination . Faculty members of this college guide and counsel the students in academic and personal matters. The students of this college are guided by teachers and alumni for self employment interaction with district and Bank official .This college has alumini association and many of its members have occupied prestigious positions and made their almamator proud. The alumini members meet regularly and plans for overall development of this college. The Alumini association honors teachers of this college and provide funds to develop infrastructure facilities .
College publish its updated prospectus annually and there are 22 different types of prospectus content . A number of students of the college obtain financial aid through 13 type of scholarships. About 246 students have taken the benefit of scholarships for the past 2 years . It is noticed by the peer committee that teachers are participative in academic and personal counseling. Indoor and outdoor games , nature club , debate club , dance and music competion , audio and video facilities , student magazine , essay writing , Gymnasium and cultural programmes are relational teaching available to the students . There are other facilities which provide all round development of the student .
Criterion - VI :- organization and management
The college has a transparent administrative and systematic organizational setup . The college is managed and administered by the Principal along with staff council and other committees . Their Main duties are to monitor proper running of the teaching work and to maintain discipline among faculty members . The college also form a club event committee , like local managing committee , study of the department, activity committee faculty , forum and student feed back . These various committees help to provide curricular and co-curricular activities and to organize the different programmes . The students under the guidance of the teacher plan and organize the various activities of these committees. The cultural, sports activities and extension activities seem to help the college in evolving as a well balanced institution of learning.
The faculty selection is made by the Bhonsala Management through selection committee. The peer team observe a large number of teachers are availing orientation and refresher courses . The college has conducted 10 UGC sponsored refresher courses. The office superintendent and administrative officers look after the administration of the college under the supervision of the Principal There is Grievance and Redressal cell to look after the problems of the teaching and non teaching staffs. The work efficiency of non teaching staff has been improved by conducting service training to them .
The budget of the college is based on Govt. grants , and fee from self financing course . The college is Grant in Aided and the salaries of the teaching and non teaching staffs are met by the Maharashtra Govt. The tuition fee structure will be changed by the University as and when it is necessary .
Criterion VII :- Healthy practices
The peer team identifies the following features which should enhance the academic ambience of the college.
The college should apply for Autonomous status .
The Principal and other teaching staff work collectively not only to improve the quality of education but also for overall development of the personality of the students
Special lectures are arranged by inviting eminent writers , freedom fighters and senior citizens of the city to inspire the students, about moral, ethical values.
Academic plans are prepared in advance which improve the academic standard of the college.
The strategic plan of the college , time table, annual academic and action plans tests , performance are practiced etc.
Collective decision making and team work is worth noticing
The dedication of students and staff to strive hard to reach greater heights of excellences our of higher education is commandable .
Effective running of the restructural courses.
The loan decoloties available for staff is one of the excellent welfare measure.

Leadership qualities , initiative, multi-tasking , strategy, planning, love for the Motherland, will and eagerness to accomplish any task are such values as will help an individual succeed be it any vocation he chooses.
A cutting edge that military education provides to the trainee is the physical endurance and stamina that goes hand in hand with a well-balanced mind. This will stand an individual in good stead throughout his life.
Military education inculcates confidence and self- esteem , thus arousing in an individual an urge to realize his potential.
The Bhonsala Military College is an institute for higher learning with the specific objective of imparting value based education and devoted specially to the study and development of the field of Defence and Strategic Studies . It is privately supported by the Central Hindu Military Education Society (CHMES), the parent body of the college. The objectives include education that can contribute towards upholding the integrity and sovereignty of India . These are the special features of the institute and it is developed accordingly as could be observed from the various student activities demonstrated to the PEER TEAM, apart from conventional class room teaching. The college started with only science faculty in the degree level, later the Arts and the Commerce faculties were added .
The overall academic and other student programmes are designed for all round development of personality and it is observed that this objective is achieved to a large measure. This observation is confirmed by parents and alumni in their interaction with the PEER TEAM .
Inter-personal relationship and individual guidance plays an important role in this college. The alumni demonstrated a strong sense of belonging due to this. A high degree of discipline of the entire college community is commendable .
In many ways the college is innovative with special features centered around defence related studies with specific skills .
Some of the other commendable features include the sports facilities including a standard swimming pool, Horse riding and other facilities . The very active programmes in many fields and their success are reflected in the many awards won by the students competing at the University and State , National and International levels.
The physical infrastructure is excellent .
Support Services and related infrastructure are very good.
Several programmes are career oriented . Along with career development activities , emphasis is on developing activities to compete in UPSC examinations and joining the army and navy . Programme options provide for flexibility.
Course revision and restructring process is fast in the computer science department
a) Computer Science department is self financing type at both PG and UG level . It is a very good department, with adequate infrastructure . However it appears that recent results and employment are not compatible with this . The teaching faculty needs improvement .Internship in IT industry and business , and summer placement recommended. Short term , job - oriented modular courses as PG -Diploma and PG- Certificate of the College will help the position to some extent.
b) Commerce department also can introduce similar job-oriented self- financing courses, and give college certificates.
The Library is good , but needs more books.
In the science department there are research activities . Research is a strong activity in Defence & Strategic Studies and in commerce. There Research activities in other department should also be encouraged.
Extension activities are good .
The college has held many Refresher Courses; It is a UGC recognized Refresher Course center.
In a few departments however there is only one teacher in each. Needs strengthening.
The college has good programmes for skill development , in areas like capacity to learn , communication, numerical capacity, and team building through event management .
The active interest in national integration is demonstrated by the presence of students from the North-East region including twelve girls from Meghaley , who greeted PEER TEAM and some students from the Manipur including a teacher from Manipur .
Maintenance expenditures and the quality of infrastructure and student programmes achieved so far, are likely to increase . The institute must take up resource generation schemes seriously ,
The college authorities should make special effort to increase employment of BMC graduates in appropriate level jobs.
Efforts be made to increase performance in NET , SLET , GATE and similar tests .
Student-counseling and awareness about GRE , TOEFL , MAT etc. desirable . The college can conduct coaching classes for these.
The library should be given much more generous budget to improve further.
Steps should be taken to provide training for written tests in UPSC and other competitive examinations.
More new subjects be added to take advantage of the environment and infrastructure built up.
With a strong value-based educational environment and good infrastructure having been established, the college should now make all necessary efforts and take all necessary initiatives to become autonomous within the foreseeable future. The University Act has provision for this. This will help the college to realise its full potential.
