Nude Gods a no-no

An Australian swimwear brand was in trouble recently after putting Goddess Lakshmi on its collection. The Hindu Munnani led a vociferous protest and soon enough, an apology followed.

In the past international footwear brands and even gay magazines have been in trouble for the same reason.

However, Alyque Padamsee, renowned advertising expert, says, For the Australian brand, using Goddess picture is just another design element. However, its better not to bring religion into the ad world.

While it may be another story in the West, India is different.

Jesus Christ is a popular symbol in the West but Indians are conservative with the concept of God. Bringing religion into a non-religious context might hurt people, he adds.

World famous artist M.F. Hussain now lives in self-imposed exile, due to protests against his art.

Meena Dadha, an art curator, says, When certain issues are sensitive, its best to look at many points of view before expressing your creativity. Knowing how emotional we are about our gods, we have to respect them, she says.

Similarly, Reegena Jeppiar, director of Jeppiar College, says: While certain groups may not take offence, there are others who will. You should not exploit or offend any religion.

It may be cool to be religious and spiritual, and flaunting an Om or a Lord Ganesha T-shirt is acceptable but having images of a Goddess on skimpy clothes is insulting, says Vishal Babulal, owner of Tantra, a popular T-shirt brand.

The religious aspect is just a design element. Wearing a T-shirt or a cap with a religious motif is not objectionable. However portrayal of deities on swimwear is not right, he says.

Vishal thinks wearing T-shirts with an Om and Swastik has now become a style statement. Such clothing is appealing to the general public. Its now a style statement and not about one particular individual following a particular faith.

V.V. Ramanee, an artist, says even though art gives one freedom of expression, it should not be misused. Artistic freedom does not give you the permission to hurt another persons feeling. It seems better to keep creative freedom and religion separate.
