NAAC report of Asan Memorial College of Arts and ScienceIntroduction
Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science was established in the year 1994 by Asan Memorial Association, Chennai, the association that was started in Chennai in 1965. This college is named after one of the great Malayalam poets, Kumaran Asan. The college affiliated to the University of Madras, was started with the aim of offering job-oriented courses. Initially the college offered degree courses in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Hotel Management, and within a short span of 09 years, the college has consolidated its base by diversifying its subject offerings in advanced areas.
The college now offers job oriented courses like BBA, MCA, MBA, B.Sc. (Hotel and Catering Management), besides degree programs in Commerce and also offers postgraduate degrees in Microbiology and Biochemistry. The college has sprawling campus spread across 12-acre area at Jaladampet on Velachery - Tambaram Road on the outskirts of Chennai city. A well-maintained lush green campus having spacious accommodation for various departments, separate hostels for girls and boys, Spacious auditorium, canteen, etc. provide good ambience and infrastructural facilities.
The college has employed 62 teachers and a number of them are given UGC pay scales. Other teachers are paid consolidated pay based on their qualifications and experience. The student enrollment for the year 2002-2003 was 588 and as many as 357 of them hail from the other states i.e. Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, besides, there are 19 NRI students. Out of the 226 students enrolled for postgraduate courses, 131 are from other states.
The Asan memorial Trust which closely monitors all the activities of college also runs other educational institutes including Senior Secondary School, Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vocational Institute of Hotel and Catering Management and has recently launched a College of Engineering and Technology.
Having entered into the 9th year of existence, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science decided to opt for institutional accreditation. Subsequently college had submitted its self-study report to National Assessment and Accreditation Council, NAAC, Bangalore. A peer team comprising of Prof. Dr. L. Venugopal Reddy, Vice Chancellor, Nagarjuna University, Andra Pradesh as a Chairman, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahiman, Professor and Chairman, Department of Biotechnology, Kuvempu University, Karnataka and Prof. Bhuvan,G.M, Head of Hotel management, Christ College, Bangalore as members was constituted with Dr. Jaganath Patil, Asst. Advisor, NAAC as co-ordinator. The peer team visited the college on 21st and 22nd August 2003 to validate the self study report and held discussions with various stake holders including Principal, Students, Faculty, Non Teaching Staff, Management, Alumni and Parents.
After validation of self-study report, checking documentary evidences and in light of the discussions, peer team prepared a detailed report as given below.
Section II : Criterion Wise Analysis
Criterion I - Curricular Aspects
Asan Memorial College started with a goal of equipping young men and women with knowledge for job oriented courses and at the same time inculcate good character and true sense of human values. It also aimed at conserving the rich tradition and culture of our great country, by making the young generation to respect our heritage.
The committee is of the opinion that the institution is moving in the right direction and therefore the goal is compatible with their objectives. The institution has been periodically reviewing their objectives for the betterment of the student community.
The curriculum of every department is fixed by the Parent University and therefore the college does not have freedom but certain co-curricular and extra-curricular activities have been included.
The management is striving to get feedback from the students and parents to extend better services to student community.
The committee is of the considered opinion that being a institution established in the name of the great Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan, the college should have given some thought of introducing courses like Sociology, Literature, Philosophy etc. which are dear and near to the mentor of the college.
Criterion - II
Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
The college management has provided the departments with basic infrastructure, teaching aids and therefore the teaching-learning process is going on smoothly though there is not much academic flexibility. There are Six faculty members having highest qualifications i.e. Ph.D. and 22 members with M.Phil.
Twenty three teachers have been recruited in recent period and the selection of young scientist awardees as one of the faculty is commendable. The faculty members have been given opportunities for continued academic progress but it would have been in the interest of the well being of the students / institution if the faculty development programme is strengthened, say by allowing the teachers to participate in refresher courses and orientation programmes more frequently. The institution may think of rewarding the teachers who have done appreciable service for student s development. It is noticed that the faculty turn over is on higher side.
It is really a matter of concern that not much linkage is made with national and international agencies for the overall development of students and to open up placements, in spite of running courses like Hotel Management, MCA and MBA. The college is conducting entrance examinations several times to get the required number of students to MBA and MCA programmes and inspite of this the institution is unable to attract the meritorious students. This may be the reason as to why some of the departments, especially the P.G departments have poor success rate.
The committee feels that the institution must think of some concrete measures to get bright students by reducing the fee structure for meritorious students.
Criterion - III
Research, Consultancy and Extension
The institution is endeavoring to promote research and consultancy but it has to go a long way in achieving this goal. The faculty members are, no doubt, showing interest in improving their qualification by registering as part time scholars for their M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees. The college has appointed placement officer to place MBA, MCA and Hotel Management students, in proper jobs but a similar facility and it needs to be extended to other departments also. The college is under taking various extension activities through NSS and Rotract Club. Blood Donation Camps, AIDS Awareness Programme and other community development activities are satisfactory.
It is suggested that teacher may try to get financial support for their research activities from the any national or regional funding agencies.
Criterion - IV
Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The committee is happy to observe the availability of requisite physical structures, material requirements, laboratory facilities, teaching aids and human resources. What is required is to put all these into proper use.
The M.Sc. Microbiology department has all the requisite laboratory equipments but the success rate is as low as 18%. Similar low rate of success is also observed in the Biochemistry P.G. department, even B.Sc., B.Com results also need improvement.
The committee appreciates the management for providing the college with a spacious auditorium, well-maintained gardens, good hostels and other facilities like subsidized canteen. Besides Volley ball and Basket ball courts, college also has indoor sports facilities like Table Tennis. The sports facilities especially the playground needs immediate attention to upkeep.
The number and quality of the books needs improvement. The library needs an all round development. Recently the college has started computerising the library also. It is suggested that the library may be kept open on Sundays and Saturday afternoon. In fact these are the days the students with serious academic bent of mind can make use of the library facilities. The college can also think adding a few more useful journals. However, the library of MCA and MBA has good collection of books and journals.
Students Support and Progression
The college faculty are trying to help the students in the academic upliftment and to provide placements to the outgoing students. The coming forward of many reputed companies for the campus interviews for recruitment is indicator of this. It is heartening to note that more than 50% of the MBA students and Hotel and Catering Management Students also are placed in different industries, immediately after completing their course work.
Nagaland, Meghalaya, Andaman and Nicobar Governments are awarding scholarships to their students studying in this college. Attempt may be made to bag such scholarships from other states especially from the Kerala government or from philanthropists, because quite a good number of the students are Malayalees.
The students of MBA, MCA and to certain extent students of other departments are given access to the internet facilities and it is noteworthy. The availability of 03 separate computer labs will help the student community but it needs to be monitored in such a way that these facilities are fully utilized. It is appreciable that old students of college meet annually but formation of registered alumni association would go a long way in strengthening the institute.
Organization and Management
Asan Memorial College is an unaided private self-financing college. Asan Memorial Association engaged in running several educational institution holds control on the affairs of the college. The association has formally established a governing body / apex body which takes policy decisions regarding the organization and management. However the founder secretary of the college continue to be the guiding and moving spirit. There is also a college management committee comprising members from apex body, University representatives, faculty and other sections of stakeholders. The issues regarding students performances, discipline, staff performance, recruitment, hostel management are discussed in the monthly meetings of the committee.
Under the guidance of the management, college follows rigorous fiscal discipline. In the last two years the college made surplus of Rs.63 lakhs and Rs.65 lakhs for the year 2001 and 2002 respectively.
Fees collected from students is the prime source of revenue generation of the college. Responding to the severe competition, by large number of institutes, college has reduced the fee structure to a reasonable level.
In some departments, faculty evaluation is done by students through student s assessment form. The performance of non-teaching staff is evaluated by the manager with the help of assessment form, which is further recommended by principal. The academic calendar of the college is prepared by a committee consisting of principal and staff members, which is further approved by management. The college management also offers certain welfare programmes like medical leave, earned leave, maternity leave, provident fund, festival advances etc. Certain benefits like provident fund is offered to permanent staff. The faculty members and principal are also involved in counseling and monitoring students informally. The college may think of establishing formal mechanism for grievance readdressal and counseling. The college may consider spending some part of surplus to enhance welfare activities.
Criterion - VII
Over a period of time, the college has introduced some good practices. As an attempt to improve the quality, students are given monthly tests, including surprise tests and model examinations. The status is communicated regularly to the parents. The days like College day, Sports day, Fine arts, Literary day, Convocation days are organized in college is providing scope for student participation and faculty interaction. Helpline classes of half an hour every day with the help of the tutors are aimed at inculcating moral values and civic responsibility among the students. Peer tutor system amongst the students is also introduced.
The students are sensitized to the concepts like ecological balance, conservation of energy etc. The ban on usage of plastic material in the campus has been responded positively by the student community and faculty.
The college publishes News Letter quarterly, highlighting the activities of the college. The college also owns its printing press for publishing college magazines, news letters etc. The college has introduced Group Insurance by a tieup with Tata AIG Insurance company, exclusively for students. The students are served food in canteen at subsidised rates.
Recycling of water for gardening purpose is an appreciative measure. The NSS department of the college is involved in community development activities like blood donation, AIDS awareness, immunization programmes, water harvesting etc. A separate Rotract club unit of the college also supports students and community development. Most of the courses being job oriented the college has succeeded in promoting general / transferable skills like communication skills, information technology and increasing employability.
Overall Analysis and Suggestions
Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, a subsidiary of Asan memorial Association, Chennai was started in the year 1994 and within a short period of 9 years, the college has diversified its base. It is now offering popular course like BBA, Hotel and Catering Management, B.Sc. Biochemistry, Microbiology, MCA and MBA understanding the need of hour.
It is heartening to note that the college has opted for NAAC accreditation within a short period of its inception.
Though the college has excellent infrastructure facility, it needs to strive hard to improve the performance of the students at the University level. The Peer Team makes following suggestions for betterment of college.
The college may think of introducing the basic courses like Literature, Philosophy and Sociology, keeping in mind the ideologies promoted by the mentor, Sri Kumaran Asan.
The college may think of attracting meritorious students by introducing dual fee structure
The management may think of value added programmes which can enhance the mental horizon of students community.
The college may think of having tie-ups with industries in and around Chennai and research institutions by entering into MOU for the mutual benefits.
The library needs to be strengthened and upgraded by adding books, journals and magazines. College may also make the library available to students on holidays.
The college may also think of encouraging the faculty members by extending financial benefits for Faculty Development Programmes.
The sports facilities should be strengthened. Upkeeping the play ground is also required.
The college may also think of having a gymnasium
The college may also offer better incentives and pay packets to retain as well as to attract qualified and talented faculty
The computer lab needs to be upgraded by adding latest computers
The college may think of appointing a part time doctor or by providing more frequent visit of consultant physicians.
Pest control measures like fumigation may be introduced to maintain hygiene in hotel management course kitchens, hostel kitchens, canteens etc.
The placement cell could be strengthened by appointing additional staff to take care of all the departments.
A formal registered alumni association should be established at the earliest
The college may think of organizing remedial classes vigorously to improve the pass percentage
The college may establish the grievance readdressal cell headed by a faculty member.
The Peer Team wishes the college a very bright future in its academic endeavors.
