Now, BSc students can get direct entry into Engineering

Mumbai: Wanted to pursue an engineering course but were not lucky enough to clear the entrance test? Heres good news for you. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will now allow lateral entry of BSc graduates into the second year of engineering across the country. The new scheme will be applicable from this year.

To facilitate lateral entry, the council is also allowing engineering institutes to start an additional division in the second year.

Students who have cleared BSc with a minimum of 50% in any subject combination and had mathematics in class XII can avail of this facility. Whoever wishes to pursue engineering will get a lateral entry into the second year. But they will also have to clear two subjects — engineering mechanics and engineering graphics — in addition to the subjects in that year, said SS Mantha, chairman, AICTE.He said students from polytechnic courses and those who have completed BSc through distance education, too, are eligible. There will not be any age restriction. Candidates who have completed their BSc three to four years ago are also eligible for admission in to the second year of engineering, said Mantha. The move is seen as a positive approach by many academicians. According to GT Thumpy, principal of Thadomal Shahani College of Engineering, Bandra, It will help students across the country. States with lesser number of engineering colleges will benefit the most from the reform. The national institutes of technology (NITs) will now be open for students in the second year, he said.

Following the decision, seats for lateral entry have been increased. A separate division of 60 students can be started from the second year onwards in all AICTE-approved institutions, subject to the availability of infrastructure. All institutes are expected to get the approval process done by May 31, 2011, to enable coordinated planning. The number of seats for lateral entry has been increased from 10% to 20% in all states except Andaman Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Diu Daman where it is already 30%.
