Section 1 : Introduction
Smt. P. K. Kotecha Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Bhusawal, district Jalgaon, Maharastra volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Bangalore and submitted the Self-Study Report in October 2003. The Council constituted a Peer Team comprising Dr.B.Hanumaiah, Vice Chancellor , Mangalore University, Manglore, Karnataka as Chair Person and Prof. T.V.Thyagaraja, Govt Arts College, Tumkur , Karnataka as member and Dr. C. Manoharachary, Dean, U.G.C. and Developmental affairs, Osmania University, Hyderabad as member co-ordinator.

Smt. P. K. Kotecha Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Bhusawal was established in July 1984 by Sri Saraswathi Vidyaprasarak Mandal to cater to the educational needs of women folk of the rural areas of Bhusawal in Jalgaon District of Maharashtra. It is a grant-in-aid college affiliated to the North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon. The college received UGC recognition under 2(f) in December 1988 and under 12(B) in September 1994. The management also runs a nursery school, primary and secondary school and a Junior College.

The college is located in Shanthinagar, Bhusawal a semi-urban area of Jalgaon district on a plot of 2.50 acres. The college offers UG Programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce and two PG Programmes i.e., M.A. in Hindi and M.Com. including B.A. degree specialization in English, Marathi, Hindi, Economics, Political Science and Psychology and B.Sc. degree specialization in Chemistry, Computer Science and Mathematics. Four language options are made available. In addition to this it has also designed and implemented 8 certificate courses. The college has introduced Music as one of the non-core option for Arts students from the last academic year. The college has started a Diploma in Computer programming from 2003-2004.

At present the students strength stands at a total of 1024 in UG, 125 in PG and 35 in self financing Computer Science Programme and 6 students in C.A. (P.E.I.) The college has 34 permanent, 1 part-time and 8 C.H.B. teachers supported by 4 technical and 28 administrative staff. Out of 34 permanent teachers(including 5SC, 4 Nomadic Tribes and 7 O.B.C.). Four teachers have Ph.D and four have M.Phil. The unit cost of education is Rs. 8,866/- with salary component and Rs. 860/- without salary component and dropout rate is 20% in UG / PG. The staff pattern of non-teaching is 4 SC, 2 NT, 2 ST , 12 OBC and 11 General.

Section II : Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion I : Curricular Aspects -
The college which is offering 3 years degree courses in Arts, Science and Commerce follows updated syllabus as per the norms prescribed by North Maharashtra University, Jalagaon. There are elective option available to the students which also includes job oriented courses. Practicals are introduced in some subjects of arts and commerce also besides in science subjects to strengthen practical skills and subject knowledge. The yearly teaching plan is prepared by the teachers and informed to the students in advance. Practical schedules are prepared by the college and given to the students. At under graduate level the subjects for Ist, IInd and IIIrd year include Marathi, Hindi, English, Political Science, Economics, History, Geography, Psychology, Commerce, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Electronics, Physics, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics. Further the success rate of students has been nearly 80% . Two P.G. courses i.e., M.A. Hindi and M.Com. are offered besides Diploma course and certificate course and other course like CAPE-I. It is important to mention that the institution has received accreditation from the institute of Chartered Accountant (PE -I), Mumbai for CAPE-I course. The college has also established a Centre of Bharathiya Vidya Bhanvan, Mumabai The computer Science department of the college offers various certificate courses. The syllabi of many subjects are revised by the university from time to time. The college has also conducted extension lectures, workshops and field visits of the students in order to get experience, strengthen, skills and to develop a good personality.

Criterion II : Teaching Learning and Evaluation-
The admission process is transparent, teaching work is as per university norms and teaching plan is informed to the students in advance. Attendance has been made compulsory and feedback is obtained from both teachers and students. Annual examinations are conducted as per schedule. The Principal, different committees and management takes interest in over all monitoring of the college , particularly in teaching , learning and evaluation. Teachers extend help and guidance to the students besides offering bridge courses. Students are exposed to seminars and workshop while teachers are deputed to participate in refresher courses, orientation courses and workshops to update their knowledge. Remedial coaching is done regularly to the students who are poor in the subject. Teaching plans are prepared and distributed in advance. Audio Visual aids are used besides regular class room teaching. Cordial relationship is maintained between the students and teachers. Adequate Library facilities are provided besides home lending of book and providing a reading room. The annual system of examination of North Maharashtra University is followed. It is interesting to note that the college has bagged good ranks in university examinations.

The students are guided by their teachers to work on some projects related to the concern subjects keeping in view the regional/local issues or case studies. The college library has got a good facility for text books, reference books, some research journals, periodicals. There is Minority Books Bank facility in the library with the financial assistance from U.G.C.. There is a reading room which can accommodate about 60 students at a time. The library facilities are fully utilized by the students and the faculty .

One book from the main library and one book from the departmental library are issued to each student which will be allowed to keep for a week.

Periodical tests are conducted to evaluate the performance of students . Due attention is paid to the slow learners by taking extra coaching classes. Students are supplied with feedback evaluation sheets which are received by the Principal in confidentiality. Further steps are taken to rectify the deficiency in teaching after due verification of a feed back sheets. Teachers prepare their teaching schedule in systematic manner. Innovative methods such as plastic models, charts, cassettes , audio and video aids are used for effective teaching . Some steps are taken to improve the spoken English skills of the students by conducting special classes in English language . Periodical meetings are conducted with the parents and the students to improve upon teaching, learning and evaluation aspects which are an important components of a building , knowledge society, beside taking care of the empowerment of women. The practical labs. have adequate facilities to meet the requirements of concerned subjects. The teachers from Arts and Commerce also conduct practical as per North Maharashtra University norms and students have shown keen interest in these project works. The Principal and the academic committee always keeps a vigil in running the regularly and in the implementation of all the academic programmes.

Criterion III : Research Consultancy and Extension-
College authorities encourage teachers to do M. Phil and Ph.D. under the guidance of a research promotion committee formed. Nearly 11% of teachers are involved in doing research and operating minor research projects to the tune of Rs. 1.5 lakhs. The teachers are involved in writing articles and editing books. The teachers from Arts , Commerce and Sciences have published 18 books and more than 30 research papers. The teachers keep themselves abreast with the advancement of the subject concernd by attending refresher courses, orientation courses, workshops and seminars. The college itself has organized five one day seminars besides conducting extension lectures from different fields of education so as to encourage and motivate the students towards learning.

Impressive work has been turned out by the Adult Education Wing of the college in the adopted village by involving students. Botanical garden has been developed with variety of plants including some medicinal plants. At the T.Y. level project work has been introduced for B.Sc. students. The departments of Botany, Computer Science and Commerce provide consultancy on non-commercial basis to the farmers, students, forest department and local people, as it is a backward areas with poor economical background. Further the students are trained in personality development. Additional work is given to teachers to conduct NSS programmes involving NGOs and Students, NCC camps are also held. The students of the college have also received best NSS award and best sports person award every year. Ten grace marks are given for those who actively participated in NSS and NCC camps. The psychology department is actively involved in students counselling. The college is also running a Center for Adult and Continuing Education.

Criterion IV : Infrastructure and Learning Resources-
The college is located in a campus area of 2.50 acres which is well maintained and the built-up area is 40,000 sq.ft.. It houses main building, library, ladies hostel, canteen, cycle stand, stage, playground. The main building is a two storied building. It has 34 rooms including 18 big rooms, 12 medium rooms and 7 small rooms which houses 8 labs, a staff room, canteen, ladies room, consumer stores, tool room, toilets , a dark room and multi purpose hall.

The college has separate two storied hostel building with intake capacity of 50 students, consisting of 23 multi seated and well equipped rooms. Since the number of resident students are less , it also houses the Music department, health center, counselling center, staff credit society, Gymkhana and NSS office, thus utilizing the available space in a useful way.

Seperate spacious vehicle parking shed, round the clock drinking water facility, water filter and cooler, P.C.O., consumer stores, Xerox unit, canteen and a host of other facilities cater to the day-to-day requirements of students in the campus.

The college library is located in a separate building. There is an advisory committee for the library with principal as the chairman and librarian as the secretary. The library has a collection of 8663 books and subscribes to 31 journals and periodicals. The library functions from 7.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. for six days a week. The college library is linked with the libraries of other colleges in Jalagon, Faizpur and Bhusawal it self. Apart from this many teachers of the institution have developed rapport with reputed libraries like R.B.I. Library Bombay, N.I.B.M. Library Pune, N.I.R.D. Library Hydrabad, I.I.T. Delhi & Mumbai etc. Computer facilities and book-bank facilities are also available in the library.

The college has 2 computer labs , one is for Computer Science Department having 11 computers with Internet facility and another for Commerce department with 5 Computers. The commerce computer center is also made available to Arts students. Their are 6 printers. Computer lab works from 8.00 am to 5.00 p.m. Computer facility is provided to administration section, Physics department and the library. Packages on data structure visualization for S.Y.B.Sc. students are prepared in the college computer lab.

There is separate administrative block which accommodates president chamber, principal and vice-principal's cabins, office, waiting room, meeting hall and pantry cabin. A botanical garden has been developed by the Botany Department.

The college has a Gymkhana with table tennis and other indoor games. Besides the students are provided with the facilities for games like Badmition, Khabaddi, Kho-kho, Athletics. The college makes use of the playgrounds of its sister institutions along with its own playground. Some of the students of the college have participated in the intercollegiate, inter university and regional sports events and brought laurels to the college. Nine students of the college have participated at national level sports events. The college provides basic equipments, track suits, T-shirts and other incentives to the students participating in sports events. The college has a multi Gym facility developed out of U.G.C. grants and it is utilized fully by the students. The gymnasium facilities are made available to outsiders also in the evenings on nominal charges.

There is a health center in the college which provides medical requirements of the campus population. Annual medical checkup has been arranged by the college for the first year students. The college implements mandatory requirement of the university for having a compulsory insurance for students. The teaching and non-teaching staff are entitled to get reimbursement of their medical expenses as per the norms of the Government of Maharashtra.

The college infrastructure is optimally utilized by UG, PG and PU students. In addition, a number of other NGO's and governmental departments makes use of the infrastructure for various activities during vacation , out of which some fund is generated which is utilized for the development of college. The college building is also made available to the staff for activities like marriages, functions etc.,. The college has maintained a neat and beautiful lawn in the campus. To make the campus mosquito free the project "Gappi Fish" is initiated.

The infrastructure of the college is well maintained with the financial support from Management and other funding agencies. The Campus Development Committee of the college takes care of tree plantation, development of lawns and other activities to keep the campus pollution free and clean.

The Construction Committee of the Management takes steps to augment the infrastructure in accordance with the academic growth of the institution.

Criterion V : Student Support and Progression-
The student support and progression has been considered by the college as an important aspect for the development of students.

The students progression and examination results are consistently good. In some subjects the result goes up to 100%. The college has been securing several ranks every year. The college has started Alumni Association recently. The college Alumni includes many successful people in different walks of life. The Alumni Association is active in conducting various activities.

The college publishes updated prospectus. It contains admission rules, fee structure, courses offered, facilities provided, financial aids available and other details. The admission schedule and the calendar of events of the college are published through local cable TV operators, pamplets etc,.

Various scholarships are available to meritorious and economically weaker classes students constituted by philanthropic individuals and institutions, in addition to the free ship and scholarships instituted by the central and state Governments. About 60% of students are getting one kind of financial aid or the other.

The college conducts special coaching classes for minority students in English, Mathematics, Computers Science and General knowledge with financial assistance from the U.G.C..

The college offers academic and other type of Counselling through Carrier Guidance Committee. The Counselling Center in collaboration with "Dainik Sakal" a leading newspaper conducts counselling classes.

Psychology department is involved in personal and academic counselling. Various committees, associations and clubs organize number of activities throughout the year providing opportunities to students not only for development of overall personality but also special talents and skills.

Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan (Bombay) Center is established in the college to conduct various short-term non-conventional courses specially suitable for girl students.

The college publishes Annual Magazine which provides opportunity to develop literary talents. Many students have won Gold and Silver Medals for their talents. "College Katta" an interaction centre between students and teachers, helps to bring out hidden talents of students.

Large number of philanthropic individuals and organizations support the students by constituting various cash awards. The rank holders are encouraged by donors in the forms of cash awards to the extent of Rs. 2,000/- to 3,000/-. Diversified activities are organized in the college with the aim of supporting and nurturing the academic and other talents of the students.

Criterion VI : Organisation and Management-
The college is managed by the Executive Committee of Sri Saraswathi Vidya Prasarak Mandal headed by its president. The Executive Committee is mainly responsible for policy decisions and development of the college. The College Executive Committee and Local Management Committee advises the principal in internal administration and financial management of the college. He is assisted by the Vice-principal and the heads of departments in academic, financial and curricular activities. The college has an elaborate committee system for effectively co-ordinating curricular, co-curricular,extracurricular, social and cultural programmes of the college. The Students Council of the college looks after the welfare activities of the students.

The college conducts professional development programmes like 10 days computer awareness programmes for both teaching and non-teaching staff. In addition they are also deputed for various workshops and other courses conducted by the university and the government organizations for their professional development.

The fee structure is as per the university regulation. The college gets grants from the UGC. The accounts are regularly audited by the professional internal auditors and governmental agency. Their is a Grievance Redressal Cell in the college to redress the grievances of students, teachers and non-teaching staff.

Their is a Welfare Committee to look after the welfare activities of the staff and students. Various welfare schemes are Health Center provides medical facilities, college campus is made available to staff members for programmes like marriages during vacations, earned leave and medical reimbursements facility is available to staff. Transportation has been provided for students coming from distant places. Various types of loans are available to teaching and non-teaching staff through PF, college credit society, LIC, Banks etc.,

Students magazine, indoor and outdoor games, cultural programmes, audio Video facilities, dance and music competition, essay writing competition are some of the recreational and leisure time facilities available to students.

Criterion VII : Healthy Practices -
The college has adopted several healthy practices that are helping in the overall development of students. Some of the important healthy practices adopted by the college are

To improve the quality of education an IQAC has been formed.

To test the performance of the students regular tests, seminars, tutorials are conducted.

Quality of teaching is evaluated through a feedback obtained from students.

Class room teaching and overall discipline are monitored by the respective teachers , Principal and the disciplinary committee.

The college has adopted an annual planning for curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities.

The college has established linkages with some institutions which help the students as well as the teachers who are engaged in research work and extension.

The college provides add-on courses out side the conventional programmes through a short term self financing certificate courses in computer science, C.A. course, training for maintenance of electrical and electronic home appliances etc.,

To train the students in non-conventional courses the college has established Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Centre, Mumbai in the college premises.

The college lays special emphasis on value based education through morning prayers, college khatta, NSS and other cultural activities.

Impressive subject related extension and co-curricular activities by the departments like physics, computer science etc. have contributed to the overall personality development of students.

Due attention is paid to harness leadership qualities, communication skills, team work, confidence building through activities like debate, seminars, group discussions, essay competitions, dance, music etc.,

Number of community oriented programmes are carried on by the college NSS units in the adopted village Kurhe through street plays, lavani etc., in addition to Yuvathi Sabha, arts circle, Adult and Continuing Education Department and various cultural committees of the college help in the allround development of students.

The students actively participated in AIDS awareness and pulse-polio programmes.
The college is an approved coaching center for CAPE-I course.

Selection of class representatives, gathering secretary, best student, best sports person, best social worker are notable healthy practices of the college.

Transparency has been documented in admission, finances, conduction of examinations and sufficient care was taken for an effective teaching so as to make the students to be knowledge rich, disciplined and useful for society and nation.

The parents and alumni of the college have expressed their appreciation on the quality of education and functioning of the college.

The faculty has been appointed as per the recruitment rules of the Government of Maharashtra.

Overall Analysis
The Peer-team carefully perused and analysed the self study report and also went through all the relevant documents and verified the infrastructure facilities, library facilities, sport facilities , teaching and learning process, examination system etc. besides interacting with various constituents of the institution. The committee expresses its appreciation and considers that there are a number of features of colleges approach to qualify assurance and standards which it would wish to commend. The committee in particular commends the concerted efforts made by the college in enhancing the quality of teaching, steps taken for women empowerment , motivation given to the students of backward region, tribals and overall discipline maintained in the college. Keeping in view the future plans of the institution the Peer-team would suggest the following to the institution to consider-

Upgrading the science laboratories with necessary equipments is the immediate need.

Upgrading of computer facilities for the students and the departments.

Strengthening the linkages with other institutions and industries.

Strengthening spoken English language skills by establishing a cell.

Provision of additional space (library, computer lab., staff room, students waiting room with toilets)

Introduction of some new combinations and new courses at UG and PG level including vocational courses relevant to women such as fashion design, beauty therapy etc..

Strengthening of focus on research and consultancy by the faculty.

The Peer team is of the opinion that this exercise will be useful to the institution in initiating the quality enhancement strategies towards further growth and development.
