Profile of St Josephs College, JakhamaSt. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, is the first Catholic College in Nagaland, the homeland of the Nagas. St Joseph’s College, established in 1985 and managed by the Catholic Diocese of Kohima, is primarily at the service of the youth of Nagaland, but accepts students also from neighbouring states. Although as a Catholic institution it gives preference to Catholic boys and girls in admission, the College is open to all. With the establishment of a University within the State of Nagaland in July 1994, the College is now affiliated to the Nagaland University. It is included in the List of Colleges under Section 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 and has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council with the B Grade (One of the two Colleges in Nagaland accredited by NAAC).

NAAC report of St Josephs College, JakhamaSection 1 : Preface
St. Joseph's College, Jakhama, Nagaland volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and submitted its Self-Study report to NAAC in 2004. The Council constituted a Peer Team consisting of Prof. S.C. Saha, Vice-Chancellor, Assam University as Chairperson, Prof. Barin Kumar De, Dept. of Physics, Tripura University as member coordinator and Dr. N.G. Goswami, Principal, J.B. College, Jorhat as member. The team visited the institution for two days from 8th to 9th November, 2004.
St. Joseph's College was established in March,1985 with 81 students. At present it has got 977 students engaged in pursuing undergraduate studies under 9 different programmes. The college is affiliated to Nagaland University. The institution has got UGC recognition under 2(f) and 12(b) in 2003. The college is situated on a hillside remote rural area. The college is funded by the Diocese of Kohima. Part of the expenditure is met by students' fees.
The college has 31 teachers and 16 non-teaching staff including menial staff. The college has a central library, computer center, sports facilities and health care units.
It is a co-educational institution offering courses in Arts and Commerce both at the UG and HS(+2) levels. (Activities at (+2) levels excluded from the purview of The Report).
The Peer team carefully pursued and analyzed the Self-Study report submitted by the institution. During institutional visit, the team went through all the relevant documents, visited the departments and the facilities, and interacted with the various constituents of the institution. The academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular, sports and extension facilities of the institution were visited. The Peer Team also interacted at length with the Governing Body, Head of the institution, faculty, non-teaching staff, students, parents and alumni of the institution. Based on the above exercise, and keeping in mind the criteria identified by NAAC, the Peer team made the assessment and value judgment. The assessment of the institution under various criteria is given below.
Section 2 : Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion I : Curricular Aspects
The aim of the college is to create a class of educated youth which is intellectually alert, morally upright, socially conscious, culturally distinct and nationally integrated. To be precise, the college aims at imparting quality education which is relevant, practical and useful for life to the students of the area
As an affiliated college of Nagaland University, the college has little option in the preparation of its curricula. However, within its limitations, the college has been making efforts to follow the curriculum set by the University. In order to fulfill the objectives the college has instituted a large number of associations and committees like Students Council and Arts Association and frequently organize symposiums, seminars, educational tours etc.
The college offers 8 (eight) UG courses and one Certificate Courses in Computer Science. Students can take honours in Political Science, Sociology, History, English and Commerce. In 2003-2004 Honours course in Economics has been introduced. Besides formal education the college also offers certificate courses under IGNOU programme. The students have the option to choose and select these programme of study according to their interest. The college provides scope for students' horizontal mobility, elective options and non-core options. The college lays emphasis on value-based education and believes that the university curriculum is inadequate to achieve this goal. So, the ultimate aim of the college is to attain autonomy in due course of time in order to enrich the students both academically and morally.
Criterion II :
Teaching-Learning and Evaluation
Admission to various courses of study in the college is in accordance with the policy of admission framed by it. Merit is the basic consideration and a student intending to get himself/herself admitted in the honours courses of B.A./B.Com. must obtain a minimum of 45% marks in the subject of his/her choice at the higher secondary or equivalent examination. For getting admission in English honours a student must secure a minimum of 50% marks in English in the said examination. Admission into various courses is made on the basis of interviews and academic records. Student's knowledge and skill for a particular programme after admission is assessed through regular class Tests, periodical examinations and seminars. After assessing the students the advanced learners are identified and there is also a provision for proficiency awards for such students. At the same time the college also provides facilities for weak and educationally disadvantaged students.
In order to impart quality education a departmental review of the subject allocated to the teachers is made at the beginning of the year. A well-knit teaching plan is made by every department to achieve the goal of imparting quality education. Departmental seminars and discussions among the students and teachers are also conducted at regular intervals. The use of audio-visual aids supplements classroom teaching. However, there is a need to develop a centralized audiovisual facility.
Character and Personality development is emphasized in all activities of the college. The college has a literary association and an Arts association. Leadership training programmes are also conducted by the different societies formed by the college in recent years. These societies and associations provide ample scope for extra-curricular and co-curricular learning.
The college does a periodic assessment to evaluate the students through terminal and test examinations. The pass percentage of the college at the University level examination is quite high at 92%. The college has maximum working days of around 221 days in which 184 days are teaching days. The management follows certain criteria and procedure to select deserving candidates for vacant permanent post of lecturers and non-teaching staff. In the college, methods like students' feedback are used to evaluate the performance of the teachers. Teachers are encouraged to take part in refresher courses conducted by the University. Though the college is situated in a remote hilly region, the participation of teachers in national and international seminars should be encouraged.
Criterion III :
Research, Consultancy and Extension :
Teachers undertake research work. A few teachers of the college have obtained Ph.D. degree. Some scholars have published research papers in journals. However, teachers should undertake more researches, and engage themselves in consultancy activities.
The extension activities of the college are of recent origin. There are a number of societies, which undertake extension activities rendering benefit to the Naga society. The important extension activities undertaken by the college are community development, health and hygiene awareness, medical camp including blood donation, adult education environment awareness, and teaching poor children of the nearby villages.
Criterion IV :
Infrastructure and Learning Resources :
Though located in a remote area, the college has developed good infra-structure. The campus has good roads, and beautiful gardens, and several buildings for academic purposes. It has got three hostels offering accommodation to male and female students.
The college plans to build some more new buildings. The college has not received any grants from UGC so far for the development of its infrastructure. However, it collects funds from various sources. The college has a centralized library, which contains more than 9000 books and 51 journals and periodicals. The library, college office and the computer science department have a total of 30 computers. There is plan to computerize all the activities of the library.
Hostel facilities are provided to both boys and girls students. The college management provides quarters for the staff and free transport facility is available to those staff who stay at Kohima. The management requested the IGNOU, New Delhi to establish a programme study center for computer education. The computer laboratory of the college has 23 computers.
In spite of limited facilities, the college gives encouragement to the students to take part in sports and games. The college has facilities for indoor game like Table Tennis, Carom and Chess and outdoor games such as Volleyball, Badminton, Hockey, Cricket and Football. The college often holds University Tournaments in its campus. The students of the college have won many prizes in sports competitions, notably, all the championship prizes in the recent Nagaland University Tounament and the Nagaland College Students' Unions' Overall Championship.
Criterion V :
Student Support and Progression :
The college annually prints updated prospectus giving necessary information to the students. Majority of the students being Tribal are eligible to receive scholarship. Though the college is mainly for Naga society, the admission of students from outside the state is also notceable. The college encourages the students to go for higher studies as well as for various competitive examinations. The college encourages the students to seek self-employment by conducting various career guidance programmes.
Leisure time is provided for the students to take part in recreational facilities like sports and games and spiritual development programmes.
Criterion VI :
Organization and Management :
The Management of the college is under the direct management of the Diocese of Kohima. It has also Jesuits and MSFS and Sisters belonging to Adoration and Carmelite Congregations as members of the staff. The college has duly constituted Governing Body and college committee as per the private college regulation act.
Before the beginning of every academic year, the college management prepares the academic calendar for the year by appointing two-member committee comprising of the Principal and the Vice-Principal.
The college has instituted various associations and committees to undertake programmes for the welfare of the students and the staff. Notable among them are poor students' welfare programmes, staff welfare programmes, students' counseling programmes, adult education programmes and career guidance.
There is a grievance redressal procedure in the college to address the grievance of the staff. The members of the teaching and non-teaching staff enjoy short term and long term loan facilities.
The college conducts annual audits of its income and expenditure by a Chartered Accountancy firm.
The college has service rules for its employees.
Criterion VII :
Healthy Practices :
*Although situated in a remote rural area, the college has a master plan for its future growth and development.
*Admission to various courses is made on the basis of merit and other norms fixed by the management.
*The assessment of students is done through different tests and terminal examinations.
The teachers are deputed to participate in orientation courses, refresher courses and seminars.
*The students and teachers utilize the services of the college library.
*To promote competitive spirit among the students, cultural competitions, debating competitions, literary and Inter-Collegiate Quiz Competitions are organized.
*Every department makes proper planning for imparting quality and value-based education to the students.
*The premises of the college are kept neat and clean.
*Very good student discipline is being observed in the college.
*Students union and college administration maintain cordial relation.
*Outreach activities of the students and the teachers in the nearby villages create a healthy environment in the surrounding area.
Section 3 : Overall Analysis
The Peer Team after going through the Self-Study report and after its visit to various academic and physical facilities is impressed by the achievements of the college within less than two decades of its establishment. The Peer Team believes that if the college takes steps to implement the following suggestions it would be able to move a few steps forward in its ultimate goal of attaining autonomous status.
*Considering the backwardness of the area and lack of industrialization in the state, the college should introduce schemes for the introduction of those vocational courses which would help in self-employment of the students.
The faculty members should be encouraged to prepare for M.Phil and Ph.D. degree by the management.
The college library must acquire latest books and journals required by the students.
In order to prepare the students for competitive examinations the library should acquire books of general knowledge and competitive journals.
The placement and counseling cell should be further strengthened for the benefit of the student community.
It is found that due to the absence of the flow of fund from UGC the college finds it difficult to undertake its development works. So, efforts should be made to bring the college under UGC's scheme of finance. Till this objective is achieved, the college authority should try to mobilize resources by raising public donations from philanthropists.
Efforts should be made to start classes in Science stream with major emphasis on career-oriented courses like Horticulture, Forestry, Floriculture and the likes, which have potentialities for development in the area.
The Pear Team is impressed by the overall achievement of the college and expects further development of the college for the benefit of the students of the area. The Peer Team thanks the management, Principal, Faculty members, administrative staff, students, Alumni and the parents for the excellent co-operation extended to them during the visit.
