NAAC report of BASAVESHWAR SCIENCE COLLEGESection - 1
B.V.V. Sangha's Basaveshwar Science College, Bagalkot 587101 was established in 1945. This is a grant-in-aid and self-financing college. The college is affiliated to Karnataka University, Dharwad. The College got UGC recognition under section 2(f) and 12(b) in 1969 and 1972 respectively. The college is situated along with other sister institutions in the campus of 35 acres in urban area. It offers 2 undergraduate and one postgraduate programmes in addition to Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. The college offers 9 combinations at undergraduate level. Out of the total permanent faculty strength of 45, there are 8 Ph.D. holders and 2 are with M.Phil. qualification. There are 7 temporary faculty members of which 2 are with M.Phil. qualification and one teacher is a Ph.D. holder. Out of 16 part time teachers, one is with Ph.D. and another is with M.Phil. qualification. The college is supported by 66 non-teaching staff members including five technical personnel. The total strength of the students is 574, of which 390 are in undergraduate grant-in-aid courses. The unaided programmes of BCA and M.Sc. Computer Science have an enrolment of 99 and 40 respectively. The college is primarily catering to the needs of students from rural background from the districts of north Karnataka region.
The Vision of the college is to strive for excellence in quality education with scientific attitude. The goals of the college are well defined to impart quality education in science subject and to create interests among them for extra-curricular and co- curricular activities. The college is also aiming at boosting the morale of students by conducting personality development programmes.
The college submitted its SSR to NAAC for assessment and accreditation in December 2003. NAAC constituted a peer team to visit the college and to validate the self-study report. The team was headed by Prof. C.K. Kokate, Vice-Chancellor, Kakatiya University, Warangal - Andhra Pradesh. Prof.S.R.K.Pillay, Principal, Sree Narayan Gurru College, Coimbatore was a member of the team. Dr. Arun Adsool, Principal, Vidya Pratishthan's Arts, Science and Commerce College, Baramati was the member coordinator. The peer team visited the college on 23rd and 24th August 2004.
Criterion - wise analysis
Criterion - I
Basaveshwar Science College, founded in 1945, is affiliated to Karnataka University Dharwad. The University designs the courses and frames the curriculum. Some of the staff members, being members of Boards of Studies in various subjects, contribute to the design of curriculum. Basaveshwar Science College is basically undergraduate college offering courses leading to B.Sc. and B.C.A. In addition, M.Sc. Computer Science and one diploma in medical laboratory technology are also offered. The College offers nine different subject combinations at B.Sc. level. This facilitates the students to have a wider choice of the subjects.
Basaveshwar Science College is trying to achieve its goals with the support of different academic associations, such as Statistics Teachers Association, Chem-Forum, Physics Teachers Forum and Mathematics Teachers Forum.
The Local Inquiry Committee of Karnataka university makes the academic audit periodically.
The college has conducted university level IT workshop with the help of specialists from industry. The Parent Institution of the Basaveshwar College has signed the MoU with Saginaw Valley State University Michigan, USA to share information and ideas related to curricular development.
The teachers of the college are updating their knowledge by attending refresher courses, orientation programmes, workshops and conferences.
Criterion II -
Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
The admission process begins at the beginning of every academic year. Admissions are given on the basis of merit for B.Sc. course. The students are selected for B.C.A. and M.Sc. Computer Science course through special entrance test. The college provides remedial courses to the educationally disadvantaged students and personal career guidance is provided to advanced learners.
The selection of teaching faculty is made through personal interviews. The college management recruits temporary and ad-hoc teaching staff. To update their academic level, teachers are encouraged to attend refresher courses, orientation programmes, conferences and workshops. There are 8 Ph.D. and 5 M.Phil degree holders in the permanent existing staff members. The college management periodically evaluates performance of the teaching faculty through the self apprisal reports submitted by the faculty members.
The students are regularly informed about examination patterns, passing standards, methods of evaluation and internal tests. The attendance of the students is strictly monitored. Parents of the students with poor attendance are informed, whenever necessary.
The college has good and well furnished class rooms, well equipped laboratories, hostel facilities, well stacked library and gymnasium. Teaching aids like LCD projector, educational audio-visual aids, CD-Roms and PPT are made available whenever and wherever required. The college conducts seminars, group discussions, quiz competitions and assigns project work to students. The teachers are constantly in touch with the students and advise them on all academic matters.
Under the Total Quality Management (TQM) programme of the Government of Karnataka, 4 teachers from the college were trained. With the efforts of parent institution, 52 teachers were benefitted through HRD programmes.
The overall performance of the students at different university examinations is highly satisfactory during the past five years. Around 15 students in different subjects of science were awarded gold medals. The performance of the students in chemistry was exemplary, where 8 gold medals were bagged in last 5 years.
Criterion III -
Research, consultancy and Extension
Basaveshwar Science College, being an under-graduate college, is not concentrating much on research. However, the research work in the departments of physics and languages is praiseworthy. The two faculty members in physics have presented research findings at international conference in U.S.A. There are around ten international publications in reputed journals published by the faculty members. The research work to limited extent is also carried out in the departments of botany and zoology. In the senior laboratory of department of botany plant tissue culture section has been established for research. The faculty members are encouraged to register for Ph.D. programme. It is desired that the college establishes linkages with industry and the expertise available in the college is fully utilized for the purpose of consultancy.
The extension activities such as community development, health and hygiene awareness, Aids awareness, medical camps, blood donation camps and environment awareness programmes are regularly organized by NCC and NSS wings of the college. A few staff members of the college are actively involved in organizations like Rotary and Lions club in conducting society oriented programmes, activities such as Environmental awareness and medical camps. Some of the staff members are committed to development of educational software in association with agencies such as Directorate of State Education research and Training ( DSERT ) Govt. of Karnataka and Link Edusoft, Banglore and Educational Development Centre, Washington.
Criterion IV -
Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The college has a three-storied building consisting of 52 rooms with adequate number of classrooms, laboratories and space for office. The college building houses ladies common room, recreation room, gymnasium, central store room, NCC and NSS offices, placement cell, career guidance cell and adequate number of toilets. The college has independent science laboratories with modern equipments and well-stacked library. The college has provided good hostel facilities with catering service, recreation hall, phone facility, health care unit and visitors room. Basaveshwar Human Resource Development Centre, Indira Gandhi National Open University Centre (IGNOU) and Karnataka State Open University Centre (KSOU)are also housed in the college premises. The facilities of play grounds, health centre and auditorium are common with sister institutions. The college has provided separate vehicle parking facility for the students and staff. Banking facility is available on the campus. The multi-gym facility, well maintained botanical and medicinal garden, internet center and separate NCC and NSS offices are the added facilities available.
The Library is kept open from 8.00 AM to 8.00 PM. The library is well maintained and computerized to a great extent. There are approximately 29000 books in different subjects available. The library also subscribes for 44 journals and magazines. Separate reading halls for the girls, boys and teaching faculty members are provided.
The college maintains its infrastructural facilities through UGC and State Govt. funds and contributions from patrons, well-wishers and alumni of the college.
Student support and progression
A good number of students from this college joined various professional course like engineering, medicine, law, etc. The needy students are provided with merit and economically backward scholarships, SC/ST and Government of India scholarships. The financial assistance for the physically handicapped students is also available.
The college has an independent placement cell. The student welfare officer and placement officer provide career guidance and information about the placements. Academic counselling by the members of teaching staff is available to the students.
The core structure, available subject combinations and admission policy are clearly mentioned in the college prospectus.
The college has provided a good science centre which motivates the students to develop scientific attitude and innovative skills. The nature club, debate club and facilities for indoor and outdoor games are provided. The college has very good facilities of gymnasium. The students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extra curricular activities. The students gave an impressive cultural performance depicting the talents they possess. The college students have won various prizes at zonal and state level youth festival competitions.
The college has shown very good performance in sports activity, A few sportsman have participated in national events. One student participated in international karate competition held in Russia. There are separate NCC wings for girls and boys and their performance is highly satisfactory. A few NCC cadets have participated in RD Parade. There are many cadets with B and C certificates. One of the cadets visited Kargil as a participant of National Integration Camp.
Apart form regular activities and special camps, NSS Unit of the college is conducting blood donation and pulse polio camps periodically. The performance of NSS unit is very good.
Organization and Management
The Basaveshwar Sangha is well reputed management running number of academic institutions with a sense of commitment and dedication. The college has reasonably good management structure. The Management Committee and a Governing Council meet every month for transacting business. The policies and practices of the institution are framed by Management Committee. The management has provided basic necessary infrastructure facility to the college. Financial budgeting is done at the begining of academic year and allocations are made on the basis of demands made by various departments. The senior teachers are supervising various academic activities. The committees are constituted for admission, time table, examination, gymkhana and cultural activities.
Besides the formal powers delegated to the heads of departments, teachers in-charge of various clubs, forums and associations are also given responsibilities. The performance of teachers is appraised by self assessment report filled in by each teacher and student evaluation of teachers done every year through questionnaire.
There is a grievance redressal cell in the college. The college co-operative society is functioning smoothly. Purchases are carried out according to purchase rules by inviting quotations.
Staff meetings are held periodically and the principal devotes substantial time in monitoring and guiding academic, administrative and other activities. The college has a mechanism for checking the efficiency of non-teaching staff members. The peer team appreciates the way in which overall discipline is maintained in the campus.
The peer team appreciates the efforts of college principal and the staff members in maintaining academic discipline and working in close collaboration with the parents of the students. The cultural activities, sports and games events conducted by the college are highly satisfactory.
The capacity of students to learn is improved through co-curricular activities and lecture series by experts on time management, article-writing, communication skills, team work and information technology. Remedial courses are being conducted for slow learners. Placement services are made available.
The literacy and rural development programmes, environmental awareness camps and camps for blood donation, AIDS awareness are arranged periodically.
The college internet facility encourages both teachers and students to use internet as knowledge bank. Use of computer in office administration has strengthened the working of office. Apart from in-house learning, the students are encouraged to participate in study tours organized by the college periodically.
The felicitation to the retired employees, get-togethers of alumni members and interaction meets with the parents are other activities undertaken by the college which are praiseworthy. The alumni association of the college is active and financially helping the institution for infrastructural development. The alumni members are holding prominent positions in different fields.
The feed back given by the parents and alumni members in the interaction meet with the peer team members was very constructive and in favour of the institution. They were all appreciative of the efforts put in by the principal and staff members in overall development of the students.

The college should arrange state and national level workshops, conferences and seminars. The teaching faculty should be motivated for their active participation in national and international conferences, workshops and seminars.
A separate research committee should be constituted to plan, co-ordinate and monitor research activities of the college.
Teachers may be motivated to publish more articles in standard journals.
The college should develop better academic relationships with other universities and national institutions.
The college may establish linkages with industry to enable the students to undertake projects and gain better placement opportunities
The recruitment of teaching staff members on permanent basis be made. The management may think of promoting additional welfare schemes for teachers and non-teaching staff.
The placement cell and career guidance cell should further strengthen their activities.
The college should enhance its extension activities as per the needs of the rural folks particularly rural women.
The college may establish an entrepreneurship development cell to create awareness and develop entrepreneurial skills amongst the students.
The college may start PG courses in the subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.
The college may introduce Biotechnology and Microbiology courses at undergraduate level.
