The SDM College of Business Management was established in the year 1978 by SDME Society, Ujire and is an affiliated college of Mangalore University. The college is receiving grant in aid from the State Government of Karnataka and is also conducting some self financing programmes. The college had obtained the U.G.C. recognition under 2(f) and 12(B) in 2002. The College is located in the heart of the city at Kodialbail, Mangalore having a campus of 1.3 acres and has its own building. It offers three under graduate programmes namely B.B.M., B.C.A., BHRD and the Post-graduate Diploma in Business Management. At present the College has 695 students (384 boys & 311 girls), 19 full time lecturers, 6 part-time lecturers, one qualified librarian, one Physical Director and 16 non-teaching staff.

The SDM College volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and conducted the preliminary self study in 2003. The self study report was submitted to NAAC by the College in December 2003. The Peer Team Headed by Dr. Ramesh Gangurde, Former Secretary, UGC as Chair-Person was constituted by the Council to visit the College and validate the self study report. The Peer Team comprising of Prof. P. Ramanathan (Member Co-ordinator), Former Registrar M.S.University and Prof. M. Dasan, Head, Dept.of English, Kannur University, Kerala, as members visited the College on 31st January and 1st February 2004.

The College is sponsored and governed by SDME Society ® Ujire headed by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala. The local managing committee advises the Principal in planning the growth of the College as well as deciding certain policy issues. The Principal is responsible for academic and administrative work of the College. The College is a minority institutions which has a fair mix of students from all communities and has both male and female in its staff.

The College is having one teacher with Ph.D. qualification and rest of the teachers are having PG as the highest qualification. The College has adequate academic and physical facilities. Even though the College does not have hostel facilities or adequate sports and game facilities. The College is helping in providing paying guest facility to the needy students which is appreciated by the Students as well as parents. The College is hiring nearby playground for organizing Sports and Games.

The Peer Team carefully perused and analyzed the self-study report submitted by the College. During College visit, the team went through all the relevant documents, visited the departments and the facilities, and interacted with the various constituents of the College. The academic, co-curricular, extra curricular and sports facilities of the College were visited. The Peer Team also interacted with Governing Body, Principal, Faculty, Non-teaching staff, Students, Parents and Alumni. Based on the above exercise and keeping in mind the criteria identified by NAAC, the Peer Team has taken the value judgment. As an affiliated College of the Mangalore University it follows the syllabi prescribed by the University for the UG courses in the semester pattern. The College offers three UG programmes and one PGDBM. Apart from this, the College has designed short-term courses like, Communicative English, Computer Application and Principles of Management on its own. This College has also initiated a UG Programme in Human Resources Development in this region.

The programmes offer in the College with goals and objectives through value based management education gives importance to Business Ethics. Entrepreneurial leadership is developed through challenging assignments like case studies. The teachers are involved in redesigning the curriculum as some of them are members in the Board of Studies and Academic Council. The programmes are designed in such away that the knowledge portion is around 70% and skill, around 30%. The programme provides electives and non core options and hence there is horizontal mobility.

The College takes nearly two years to introduce a new programme. By introducing BCA and BHRD, the College may be recognized as multi-faculty College. Programme options are inter-disciplinary and the system is flexible. The College gets feed-back from the local industries and the course is redesigned as and when necessary. For example, factory visit and case studies were introduced in BBM from the suggestion given in the feed back.

The College regularly interacts with chartered accountants, financial analysts and local business men for training students.

Admission to UG courses is based on the performance in the interview and the academic record. A few seats were allotted to candidates from industry and business background. During the year 2003-2004 for 285 seats in the first year, nearly 900 applicants competed.

The Principal orients the students about the College, discipline and prospects for various courses through audio visual help in the beginning of the academic year. Remedial courses are conducted for slow learners after the regular class hours. There is no separate programme for advanced learners. However, they are encouraged to present papers in seminars and also encouraged to lead group discussions.

Teaching plan is left to the individual teachers. Every teacher is making a teaching plan in the form of a work dairy. This work dairy may be regularly monitored by HOD/Principal. Teaching schedule is made as per the unitized syllabus for the semester. Apart from traditional lecture method, project work, case studies, assignments, group discussion and quiz are arranged. Guest lectures are also arranged regularly. A media center may help to prepare audio visual aids. However slides are prepared for projection using computers. Students are encouraged to participate in inter collegiate competitions.

Two tests are conducted at regular intervals in each semester. Progress report which contains attendance also is sent to parents regularly. Parents are requested to meet the students advisor to know about the progress of their children and also to take remedial action if necessary. The final examinations are conducted at the end of each semester, the overall pass percentage is around 85. The college has received 71 ranks which includes, 16 first ranks and 9 second ranks till the year 2003. It is commendable.

The teachers are recruited through advertisement in news papers. There is a selection committee consisting of management representative, Principal and the subject experts. The Principal is authorized to recruit part-time lecturers with the prior permission from the management. Routine self appraisal method is adopted for reviewing the performance of the teachers. Apart from this, performance appraisal of teachers by students is also done twice a year and Principal interacts with teachers. A suggestion box is also provided for students.

The teachers are also encouraged to participate in seminars and conferences. Expenses in this regard are reimbursed by the management. Faculty development programmes are conducted periodically to upgrade their knowledge. The College has established a linkage with professional bodies like, IIM, NIPM etc.

The main focus of the College is academic and so research is only secondary as admitted by the college. The Principal of the College has published a few papers and attended many conferences. Some teachers are doing part-time research. The teachers are actively engaged in guiding UG students in their project work. Teachers doing part-time research are encouraged by the College by adjusting teaching schedule. Now it is time that the College turns itss focus on research also. Research activities in the College make the teachers more professional and also to get updated in their respective field of interest. Consultancy work is yet to take off.

Extension activities and out reach programmes are done through NSS and other associations. Some teachers are designated for these purposes as additional charge. Some of the activities worth mentioning are:

Health and Hygiene awareness.

HIV AIDS awareness.

Environment awareness.

Blood donation camp.

Academic extension activities like tailor made courses for people working in industrial houses and business establishments and computer literacy courses may be conducted. The College provides financial and infrastructural support for extension activities.

The College building situated in heart of the city of Mangalore has 9 class-rooms, 2 staff rooms, one Computer centre, office and Principal's Chamber. The BCA Lab Computer Center and the Project Lab together has 55 computers with internet facilities. The College also has a seminar hall, indoor stadium which can accommodate 800 students. There is also an open stage which is used for conducting various cultural activities by the students.

The library has a collection of 9706 books and a few magazines. It also has press clipping and annual reports of private and public sector companies. Project reports by past students are also kept in the library.

However, the space in the library needs to be enhanced in proportion to the number of students and teaching staff. The reference section may be strengthened with more books and carefully selected reference volumes. Separate seating arrangements for teaching staff may be made in the library. Open access system may also be introduced in the library.

The number of academic professional and research journals need to be enhanced to enable the students and teachers to update and improve their knowledge in the field.

The College has a small play ground for conducting minor sports activities and for out door games, nearby grounds are hired. The College has organized State and National level cultural programmes like, 'Synergy 2003' which gave opportunity to the students not only to participate but also to gain experience in organizing such programmes. The institution has mechanism for maintenance and optimal use of the infrastructure.

The College has a very good and well organized support services including canteen, STD / ISD booth and a Xerox Centre. There is a student feed back arrangement for quality enhancement. It should be extended to all students rather than limiting it to only final year students.

The prospectus of the college gives clear information regarding the courses offered, mode of evaluation , rules and regulations, job opportunities etc. The college has a placement cell and the teacher in-charge offers career counseling to the students.

The college gives a few scholarship sponsored by parents and other agencies for students who excel in academic and extra curricular activities.

In order to provide platform for the students to bring out their talents, the college has formed various associations like Management association, Literary association, Fine arts association, which conduct various programmes regularly.

Students are also given opportunity to serve the society through the activities of the National Service Scheme.

SDM College of Business Management is one of the 36 institutions run by the SDME Society ®, Ujire headed by Dr. D.Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhakari, Dharmasthala.

There is a central committee consisting of 5 eminent personalities, a President and a Secretary elected every three year from the Trust general body. The local committee consists of 5 industrialists, a President and the principal. The day to day administration is done by the principal.

The college has an Internal Quality Assurance Cell headed by the principal which consists of senior staff members from all department. This committee with a help of several committee ensure participation and transparency in organization and management.

The institution practices relevant welfare schemes for all its constituencies. The existing mechanism for redressing the grievances may be made more effective. The college has separate internal audit wing.

The college maintains very good relation with industrialists and has made honest attempts to update the academic programmes according to the needs of the society and the demands of the market. Since the college does not have a freedom to change the syllabus as and when it is needed the college is aspiring for academic autonomy / autonomous status.

The college takes special care in maintaining discipline, in building up the confidence of the students and in improving the overall development of their personality.

The college maintains institution-industry-interface and also has built up good rapport with the parents and alumni.

The Peer Team, after going through the Self-Study Report and after the visit to various academic and Physical facilities, is pleased by the progress and reputation of SDM College in providing good academic, co-curricular, extra curricular, sports facilities as well as value education to students for their development as professional managers as dictated in the mission statement.

The Peer Team considers that there are a number of features of the college indicates its approach towards quality assurance and standards which the Peer Team would wish to commend. The Peer Team would also like to bring the attention of the college on certain concerns for the consideration. The Peer Team would like to commend the college on the following aspects:

The college is having its own building with adequate classroom and computer facilities located in the campus of 1.3 acres in the heart of city of Mangalore.

The interaction with students, alumni and Parents has given an impression that all are very appreciative of the facilities provided both for personal and academic development of the students.

Effective , Dynamic academic and moral leadership and good human relationship resulting in efficient team work.

The college has acquired a good reputation and image through its many sided contribution about four decades in management education and overall development of students.

Strict discipline maintained in the college.

The facilitating aspects of the college to promote students participation in various academic co-curricular , extra-curricular , Literary, social work activities is commendable.

The college is well governed and managed by the society which is abiding interest in providing management education.

The college follows the rules and regulations laid down by the Mangalore University for affiliated college as well as by the government of Karnataka for grant in aid minority institution.

Keeping in view of the future plans of the college, the Peer Team would like to suggest the following to the college for consideration:

While the Peer Team appreciates the overall development and growth of the college during last five years, it should draw up a blue print and master plan for its development priorities and strategic plans to actualize them in a more focused manner.

The college should appoint competent faculty as per the qualification and pay scales prescribed by the UGC / State government of Karnataka.

The Self Appraisal Report recommended by the UGC for teachers be implemented. The student's feedback be made more objective and collected from all the students.

The college is required to continue adopting modern methods of teaching and to bring innovation in teaching - learning process.

Teachers may be encouraged to prepare teaching plan and the teaching plan be monitored by the principal.

The library may be provided better and more space proportionate to the increasing number of the student and having adequate space for reference section, reading rooms and cubicles for teaching staff. The library should have facilities like internet, inflibnet as well as open access to serve the students and teachers in a better way.

Master programmes in management and computer application may be introduced to promote application of the under graduate curriculum with in the frame work of Mangalore University or by obtaining autonomous status to the college

The Peer Team is of the opinion that this exercise will be useful to the college to initiate the quality enhancement strategies towards further growth and development.
