NAAC report of Sri Sathya Sai Post Graduate College for WomenSECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
The Sri Sathya Sai College for Women, Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and submitted the Self-Study Report in July, 2006. NAAC constituted a peer team to visit the College and validate the Self Study Report (SSR). The peer team comprised of Prof. P. Ramaiah, Former Rector (Pro. V.C.), Dr.B.R. Amedkar Open University, Hyderabad as Chairman, Prof. R. Balasubramanian, Director, SRM, University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Dr. Kavita Rege, Principal, Sathaye College, Mumbai, Maharastra as Members. The Peer Team visited the College from 9 - 11 Nov. 2006. Dr. (Mrs.) K. Rama, Deputy Advisor to NAAC ably co-ordinated the Peer Team visit to this higher learning institution.
The Sri Sathya Sai College for Women, Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur was established in July, 1974 to provide education to the Women living in the city of Jaipur and other parts of Rajasthan. Students from other parts of the country are taking admission into this College. This College was born out of the ideals of Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthy. The Academic Pursuance of the College is based on the five pillars of educational philosophy of Sri Sai Baba.
The motto of the College is to provide the â€˜Value Oriented Educationâ€™ and â€˜Empowering Educationâ€™ to girls. Based on the preachings of the Swamiji that â€˜Education for life not merely living and â€˜when you educate a girl, you educate the whole familyâ€™. The College aim is totally based and functioning on the above motto and ideology of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Girls of the College are groomed to be academic achievers, balanced home makers and brilliant, successful, confident and graceful individuals. The College is dedicated to provide learning environment to build a solid foundation of knowledge, cultivating gratitude, compassion, tolerance and pursuits of excellence and self discipline. The chief objective of the College is to make quality higher education accessible to all rich and poor, urban and rural irrespective of caste and creed from every part of the country. The College also focuses on the ancient precept of wisdom of â€˜Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktayaâ€™ - Education that liberates.
The College is affiliated to the University of Rajasthan. â€˜The college is admitted under Grant in Aid Scheme by the Rajasthan Government (90%). The Institution was recognized by the U.G.C. under 2f and 12B in June, 1976. The College is located at the foothills of Aravalli Mountains in Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur. The College is housed in 13.77 Acres in an urban area of Jaipur and is well planned and neatly maintained with specious buildings with a built up area 26.463 Sq.Ft. with good infrastructure. This College caters to the higher educational needs of the urban people in and around Jaipur and other places of the Country.
The College offers UG, P.G. and Certificate Programmes. There are 3 faculties i.e. Arts, Science and Commerce. In Arts faculty, 11 courses are offered, in Science - 06 courses and in Commerce 03 courses are offered. Nine courses offered in these faculties are Interdisciplinary Certificate Courses.
Apart from this modern subjects like Bio-technology, Fashion Design And Computer Applications, Tourism and Travel Management are also taught. There are 27 permanent teachers, out of which 21 are with Ph.D. qualification and 3 of them possess M.Phil. degree, rest with only PG degree. There are 15 part time teachers, out of which 11 are with Ph.D., 2 with M.Phil and 2 with PG degree.
The College has good infrastructure facilities and the teachers follow the ideals of duty, devotion and discipline. There is 21 technical and administrative staff working in the College. The unit cost per student is worked out to Rs.2141/- without salary and Rs.32,350/- with salary. The college follows annual system of examination. The total number of students admitted in all faculties secure meritorious position and obtain academic distinctions. The College has all supporting services, such as Hostels, health centre, canteen, sports facilities, grievance redressal cell and non-residence centre etc.
The College generates considerable resources through various means like donation, Government grant, fees from self-financing courses etc. The Peer Team meticulously analyzed the Self-Study Report submitted by the College during the three days visit to the College. The team has gone through all relevant documents and has also visited the Departments and the Facilities, Academic, Co-curricular, Sports etc. of the institution. The team also interacted with the Principal, Faculties, Non-teaching staff, and representatives of students, parents and Alumni of the College. Based on the above and keeping in view of the seven criteria identified by NAAC, the Peer Team has given its value based objective assessment for accreditation of the Institution in the following pages.
SECTION 2: CRITERION-WISE REPORT
CRITERION I: Curricular Aspects:
Sri Sathya Sai College for Women, Jaipur is offering UG and PG programmes in Arts, Science and Management. The College is getting 90% financial assistance from the Rajasthan Government. The College is also selected as the model College by the Government of Rajasthan. The College is catering to the needs of the women students of Jaipur city. The College is affiliated to Rajasthan University and hence University syllabus is followed. The College has been offering various courses at Under Graduate, P.G. level and certificate level, teaching programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce at Post Graduate level. There are 8 subjects at P.G. level and 9 certificate courses in addition to 20 subjects at U.G. level. The College offers wide range of options for the benefit of students, who are coming from all parts of the country. Some of the programmes offered by the College are career oriented programmes. 50% of the courses offered are purely knowledge based, 40% have both knowledge and skill and 10% of the courses are predominantly skill based. The students have flexibility to pursue the course with reference to the time frame, horizontal mobility more elective and non-core options. The College has to adopt the syllabus prepared by the University.
The admissions are based on the merit. Students are interested to join in this college from all parts of the Country. The college does not collect any tuition fee from its students. The Philosophy of Baba is not to collect any tuition fee from the girl students. The syllabus is reviewed and updated by affiliating University once in 3 years. However, the faculty members make suggestions for improvements in respective subjects to the â€˜University Board of Studiesâ€™. Nearly three faculty members are representing in the University Board of Studies in various subjects which ultimately helps in syllabi up-gradation. The College has introduced number of need based courses. Courses offered in UG programmes are many viz., English Literature, Hindi, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, History, Home Science, Tourism and Management etc. in Arts faculty, Chemistry, Biology, Botany, Mathematics, Computer Applications in Science discipline, Commerce, Accountancy and Management are taught in the department of Commerce and Management.
The College is imparting theoretical knowledge through classroom teaching and organizing seminars and workshops to have better orientation to the students in the respective subjects. Communication skill is being developed among students in subjects like Hindi, English and Sanskrit, which results an approximate quantification in knowledge 70% and skills 30%. The mission and goals of the College is reflected through curricula by way of conducting regular classes, extra classes, class tests, skill development classes etc. Yoga and meditation is the alternate learning based on value education. Feed back from academic peers by a questionnaire format is very much helping to review and redesign teaching programmes.
The College has a very good networking with various garment manufacturing units which provide informal training to the students. The College also encouraged multi disciplinary approach especially in group discussions and class seminars, so that students can be benefited by the knowledge in different fields.
CRITERION II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation:
Teaching, Learning and evaluation is practiced well in this College. Teachers prepare their teaching plan which is communicated to students. Lecture method is supplemented by audio visual aids, group discussions, excursions and project work. Students progress is assessed through class tests, assignments, presentations etc. Weak students are given extra coaching, personal attention and remedial teaching. Advanced learners are encouraged with scholarships, awards and more challenging exercises, project work etc. They are given special status as team leaders, easy access to authorities and monetary help if needed. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities. Students performance is a testimony to the efforts put in by teachers. College has 27 permanent teachers all female of which 21 have Ph. D. as highest qualification; 3 with M.Phil and 3 with Masters Degree as highest qualification. There are 15 part time teachers. Teachers spend extra time for students. Teachers are encouraged to upgrade their skills by organizing and participating in seminars and conference. Teachers attend Orientation and Refresher courses. Guest lecturers are invited as per curriculum requirement. .
The faculty members monitor the academic, cultural and sports and games activities of the students very systematically and enthusiastically. The teachers are recruited as per the norms of the Government and guidelines through a duly constituted selection committee. The selection committee consists of University nominee, external experts and Government nominee. Over and above, the permanent teachers, guest faculty, past students, entrepreneurs, people from Industry are invited as guest speakers. Teachers are assessed through self-assessment plan every year, which includes teaching methodology, research contribution, conferences / workshops attended, awards and honours and membership in professional bodies. A class room feed back is obtained which infers to rectify some of the shortfalls. Positive encouraging feedback is communicated. Principal and Secretary of College actively participate in appraisal of teachers. Seminars/ conferences and workshops are organized regularly. Prominent persons from academic fields are invited to be the chief guest. Three faculty members have obtained Ph.D. through Faculty improvement programme, (FIP), eight of them attended refresher courses and nine of them attended orientation and seminars. Awards based on their performance are extended to the faculty annually by the management once in a year. One Hindi lecturer has received UGC career award and mewar foundation award for literary achievements. The college is focusing on EDUCARE under Sathya Sai Babas guidance. Yoga is compulsory in the first year.
Conduct of Bridge course in spoken English implemented for all the students. The faculty is committed for the personality development of the students. The College is following the year end system of Evaluation but however, the continuous evaluation methods are adopted for upward development of the students. Awards and endowment and scholarships are given to the students who excel in Academic and cultural activities. Internal assessment method is adopted at P.G. level.
CRITERION III : Research, Consultancy and Extension:
The College aims to integrate, teaching, research, consultancy and extension activities. The College encourages the faculty into Research and extension activities by completing Ph.D./M.Phil. Degrees, publishing Research articles, participating in National and International seminars by presenting research papers. Some faculty members have published books and text books. Two faculty members in English are currently engaged in UGC research projects. Out of 27 faculty members, 11 staff members have published 28 books and 186 research papers. One faculty member from the Department of Hindi is a member of Central Sahitya Academy, who has published more than 100 articles. She is in receipt of UGC Career Award, for the research work. One faculty member presented a research paper in young scientist conference. Philosophy, Sociology, Hindi, History and English are involved seriously in undertaking the research. The 27 faculty members have so far attended 281 National and international seminar some vocational training programmes and sufficient member of refresher courses. The College does not provide any financial support to research students. There are two on going research projects in Economics, Home Science departments.
Faculty members from the Department of Sociology, Philosophy, Hindi and English provide the consultancy. In addition, the faculty members from Department of Home Science, Economics, History and Tourism, Garment Production Fashion Designing, Export Management, Sociology are extending lot of consultancy in designing, painting, music and communicative skills. One member from Sociology Department has extensively toured Europe on cultural assignment. One faculty member from the Philosophy Department has written a book on Child Care and Street play which communicate the theme on â€˜National Integration and Dowry Systemâ€™.
Teachers offer their subject expertise and specialized knowledge to various departments of Govt. of India, State Governments, Non-Government Organizations and University. Students and teachers are actively involved in community service programmes such as Blood Donation, Pulse Polio. Help at old age homes, school for blind, AIDs awareness, Environment awareness etc. through NSS and N.C.C. They also extend help in organization of Yoga Camp, Eye Check up. Thalessemia Test, Lectures on Traffic rules, Human rights, Disaster Management etc. The ECO club of this College keeps the surroundings green and clean. College has taken up five major projects such as Health and Hygiene, Adult literacy and education, Environment enrichment, Dignity of labour and Functional Literacy. Staff is very much active in social / community activities, cultural activities, street plays etc. Sri Sathya Sai College students actively contribute in women organizations like RUWA, VIVIDHA, Consumer organizations, SAJAG and Pratham of Rajasthan by rally, poster competitions etc.
CRITERION IV: Infrastructure and Learning Resources:
Sri Sathya Sai College for Women is a multi Faculty College situated in Jaipur providing higher education since 1974, which is now one of the leading educational Institution providing higher educations for Girls at Jaipur. This College is spread over to 13.77 acres with a built up area of 26463.6 sq.ft. The College is located in urban area near the beautiful Aravalli mountain range.
The College has ten class rooms for theory classes and separate laboratories for all practical subjects. The Bio-Technology has Laminar flow cabinet, Colorimeter, Autoclave, Colony Counter. The College has a multi purpose Auditorium, Computer Laboratory, Open air stage, Play ground, Indoor games hall etc. The computer laboratory is equipped with 35 computers some equipped with LAN and broadband facility. A good Canteen is available for the benefit of the students. A Co-operative Store is available in the Girls Hostel.
The College library is centrally located and is being utilized by the students and staff constantly. The College also permits the Campus for conducting Railway, Banks, UPSC and RPSC entrance examinations which also generates some resource. The Library Advisory Committee looks after the purchase of books, journals and magazines for the library. There is no interconnectivity from any other library to borrow books. A book bank is managed by the committee of Teachers and the facility is totally utilized by the needy students. The Library is not computerized, but the process has begun. The Library has 23254 books, 157 reference books, 22 journals, 11 news papers and 15 magazines.
Purchase of books is done as per the recommendations of the Teachers. The Library works from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and on all the working days and the computer centre works from 9.00 A.M. to 4.00 P.M. on all working days fully accessible to the students to know the basic knowledge in Computer application and the fundamentals.
Doctor is available on call and he visits College on Thursday and Saturday. General health check up camps, blood group and eye check up are done by the Health Centre. Students are provided with good infrastructure facilities for both indoor and outdoor games. Yoga centre is functioning very effectively. The College has Cooperative stores, STD booth, Hostel to accommodate 200 students. The New Hostel wing is under construction through the funds provided by UGC.
CRITERION V: Student support and progression:
The College has adequate facilities to provide support services for the students. The prospectus published by the College contains the profile of the College, details about the courses offered, flexibility of courses and options, rules and regulations, facilities available on campus, scholarships, endowment awards, parent teachers association, annual calendar and hostel facilities etc. Students from other states also seek admission here. Presently students from 13 other states are studying in this College.
The College has career guidance cell to help the students for their progression. Teachers are very much involved in academic and personal counseling of the students by way of arranging study tours project works encouraging student to participate in cultural programmes activities, essay writing and elocution competition, supporting and involving them in other social activities, which is monitored by teachers. It has helped students performance in final examinations.
The College has an Alumni Association, which was formed in the year 2002. Alumni Association contributes for the improved functioning of the College in all aspects. Students are provided with enough facilities for recreation. Nature-Club, Debate Club, College Magazine, Organization of Cultural Programmes unleash the students creating talent. Lot of competitive programmes are conducted for the benefit of the students to express and bring out the talents in different fields. Outstanding sports persons are suitably rewarded. Many students have represented University at State and National Level in sports such as Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Swimming, Athletics etc.
The Alumini of the College occupies a very important position. One student is a DIG (Vigilance & Registration) and 5 of the old students have joined the college as lecturers in the same College and 20 students joined in other organizations through campus interviews. Some of the old students joined as Lecturers and School Assistant in other Colleges and Schools. One student has jointed All India Radio as an announcer. Some students have turned successful entrepreneurs. The progression to higher studies at U.G. level is 30% and 15% progression towards employment. One faculty member provides counseling for GRE and TOEFL.
CRITERION VI : Organisation and Management:
The Sri Sathya Sai College for Women is having a very good Organization and Management. The Management is headed by the President of the Society assisted by the General Secretary and other members of the organization. The Sathya Sai local trust is looking after management of the College. The Principal is given total freedom in all academic and the administrative functions of the College. The Management and the Sathya Sai local trust manages to raise the resources for the development of the College.
The College has an efficient internal co-ordinating mechanism for implementing the various activities and programmes. The Principal acts as a liaison between the college the Management, the Government and the University. The College Council consisting of the principal, Heads of the Department and the representatives from the Management, University, Government, acts as an advisory body and has a decisive role in policy making and in the internal administration. There are 26 administrative committee, academic committees constituted by the Principal to look after administration of the College. The Administration Monitoring Committee periodically helps in monitoring of the office and conducts capacity building programmes for the non-teaching staff of the College.
Committees formed to ensure smooth running of the college are Admission, Time-Table, Examination, Discipline, Library, Cultural, Games and Sports Committees. Accounts are handled by the office staff. Budgetary provisions for expenses under various heads are made in advance and are more or less adhered to. College fees are printed in prospectus and same is collected from students. Under students welfare programme facilities like fee concession, book bank facility, waiver of tuition fees are extended. Teachers grievance is voiced through a representative on the College Management Committee, Common problems are discussed in the meeting and solutions sought. Grievance of Non-teaching staff is dealt with through their representative or direct meeting with Principal. Loan facility through GPF is extended to staff. Non-teaching staff was given training in Computers. Combined co-operative fund is available in case of emergency. Students are allowed to voice their grievance through suggestion/complaint box. Necessary action for redressal is taken by Principal with the help of teachers. The teaching and non-teaching staff have various channels of committees to sort out their problems.
All purchases are made as per procedure laid down and entry is made in stock register. Transparency is maintained in overall academic, administrative and financial matters. The College is a role model of participative leadership and team spirit. Family like atmosphere prevailing in this institution ensures excellent output.
CRITERION VII : Healthy Practices:
Sri Sathaye Sai College for Women with a mission to empower women with value oriented quality education has been successful in grooming the students to attain confident, compassionate, responsible personality. College in its endeavour to produce brilliant academic achievers, intelligent homemakers, value oriented entrepreneurs has been following many healthy practices.
*Sri Sathya Sai College for Women is totally committed to provide the quality education and there is an internal mechanism to check the quality of teaching and learning.

SECTION 3: OVERALL ANALYSIS
The Peer Team after perusing the self-study report and assessing various academic and infrastructural facilities of Shri Sathya Sai College for Women, Sector 2, Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur affiliated to the University of Rajasthan is very much impressed by the mission, goals and objectives of the institution for promoting value oriented education for the girls of Jaipur City and also girls from other States of the Country.
The College has made a good progress in enlarging its academic activities by offering UG, PG and Certificate Programmes, which are not only value oriented but also job oriented courses. The College has applied for few more PG Courses and also some more job oriented courses. The Department of Home Science, Garment Production & Export Management, Drawing & Painting, Fashion Designing, Music, Travel & Tourism Management, Philosophy, Sociology, Hindi Economic and English are heading towards competency building. The PG Departments are trying their best to maintain the quality education in addition to the Departments of Commerce, Accountancy, Political Science and History. The Research work carried out by the faculty is very appreciable. Some of the faculty members are as members at the National and State Level Bodies in academic activities, social service and extension activities. The research, publication and cultural activities are very much appreciable in this Institution. The cultural activities undertaken by the College have lot of scope for development.
The method of evaluation of the students and teachers in this institution is satisfactory. Extension and Cultural activities carried out by the College are very much appreciable. The organization and management under the local Sathya Sai Trust is very efficient and are taking very keen interest in development of this Institution. The democratic and transparent administration is prevalent in this College. The College has earned a good name in imparting Value Oriented Education to the girls in this area and various parts of the country.
While appreciating the progress of the College, the Peer Team would like to suggest the following for future development of the Institution based on the policy guidelines of the Government, University and the Management.
*The Science labs of UG and PG Departments be strengthened including of Bio-Technology;
*A course on Journalism may be started;
*The Course of Cosmetology may be started;
*Physics as one of the optional subject at the UG Level may be started;
*A certificate course on Traditional Arts and Culture (Rajasthan) may be started - A Department of Fine Arts may be started;
*Faculty may be appointed on full time basis in PG Departments;
*B.Com with additional papers on computer applications and taxation may be started;
*PG Programmes in MBA, MA Economics, MA English and MA Hindi may be started;
*The College may think of some more innovative job oriented courses like Retail Marketing, Financial & Marketing Management;
*Library be computerized;
*The computer centre be strengthened and more access be provided to the faculty and students;
*The Departments of Garment Production & Export Management, Fashion Designing, Drawing & Painting, Travel & Tourism Management be further strengthened;
*Research Programmes like M.Phil may be started in the Department like Hindi, Philosophy, Sociology, English, Economics and Music;
*More numbers of Research Journals may be indented;
*Placement and Grievance Cell may be strengthened;
