The National Institute of Ayurveda is located in Jaipur, the capital of the State of Rajasthan in India. Jaipur, a heritage city, is one of the worldâ€™s most picturesque cities and is also perhaps among the worldâ€™s first â€˜planned citiesâ€™. It is also popularly known as the The Pink City of India, a name derived from its many pink sandstones buildings.
The Institute is situated about 8 kilometers from the Railway Station and about 15 kilometers from the Air Port. Two National Highways, No. 8 from New Delhi to Bombay and No. 11 from Agra to Bikaner in Western Rajasthan pass, through Jaipur.
AIMS and OBJECTIVES
The National Institute of Ayurveda was established on 7-2-1976 by the Government of India as an apex Institute.
* To promote the growth and development of Ayurveda;
* To produce graduates and post-graduates in all branches of Ayurveda;
* To conduct, research on various aspects of Ayurveda;
* To provide medical care through Ayurvedic System of Medicine to the suffering humanity;
* To provide and assist in providing services and facilities of the highest order for research, evaluation, training, consultation and guidance to Ayurvedic System of Medicine;
* To conduct experiments and develop patterns of teaching in under-graduate and post-graduate education in all branches of Ayurveda.
The National Institute of Ayurveda was established on 7-2-1976 by the Government of India as an apex Institute. It is under the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and is fully financed by it. The managing body is the Governing Body consisting of 16 Members and presided over by the Hon'ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. There is also a Standing Finance Committee chaired by the Joint Secretary of the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy.
TEACHING AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES
The Institute is affiliated to the Rajasthan Ayurveda University, Jodhpur for teaching, research and examination purposes and follows the syllabus and curriculum prescribed by the Central Council of Indian Medicine, the statutory regulatory body for Indian Systems of Medicine in the country as adopted by the University.
The Institute imparts Under-Graduate (BAMS), Post-Graduate (MD Ayurveda) teaching and training and also provides facilities for regular Ph.D.
Under Graduate Course of BAMS
The Under-graduate Course, Ayurvedacharya (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) is of 5Â½ years duration (4Â½ years of the main course and 1 year internship). The main course is divided into 3 Professional Courses of 1Â½ years duration each. The admission qualification prescribed by the University of Rajasthan is Senior Higher Secondary examination in Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Sanskrit or Uttar Madhyama of Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya with Science and English or any other examination recognized by the University as equivalent thereto. Wherever provision and facilities for teaching Sanskrit as optional subject is not available at the 12th standard, the students admitted from Science-Biology stream are taught Sanskrit in the main course.
The annual admission capacity to BAMS is 60 including 10 seats reserved for girls. Admission Notification is made on all India level and after conducting an Entrance Test, candidates standing in the highest merits are admitted in the Institute.
This Hospital, a 20-bedded one, is situated in the heart of the city at Kishan Pole Bazar about 4 kms. away from the campus and is managed by the Department of Kaya chikitsa. The OPD services are looked after by different Departments.
Patient Care Program for SC and ST Population
NIA also undertakes Medical Aid Camps in SC, ST and Rural areas of Rajasthan. Medical check-up and free distribution of medicines are done in each Camp. For 2005-06, a sum of Rs. 5.08 lakhs was incurred to organize such Camps. 4 Six day and 2 One day Mobile Clincal Camps were organized rendering medical service and dispensing medicines free of cost to 3,514 Patients. The Camps were oranized at Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Jalore and Jaipur Districts.
The Institute is also engaged in research activities to explore various areas in Ayurveda like - Clinical research, Drug research, Literary research. etc..
RASAYAN SHALA (PHARMACY)
The Institute has a Pharmacy manufacturing various types of medicines to meet the requirements of indoor and outdoor hospitals as well as for research purposes. The Pharmacy is attached to the Department of Rasa Shastra and is involved in practical teaching and training to UG students and PG scholars in order to make them aware to the knowledge of preparation of Ayurvedic medicines. Much importance is attached to the maintenance of quality of the ingredients used in various medicinal preparations. GMP is followed in the Pharmacy. The medicines are prepared strictly according to the Ayurvedic methods especially those described in Bhaishjaya Ratnvali, Rasa Yoga Sagar, Siddha Yoga Sangrah, Siddha Bhaishjya Manimala, Yoga Ratnakar, Bhava Prakash, Sarangdhar Samhita, Unani Siddha Yoga Sangrah, etc. In addition, certain highly effective Yogas (types) are also prepared according to the methods laid down in Ayurvedic Scriptures. The Pharmacy is equipped with modern equipments and machineries. Traditionally used equipments are also available and are put to use wherever necessary in the method of preparation. On an average, around 125 varieties of Medicines worth about Rs. 25 lakhs are manufactured every year for dispensing in the Institute Hospitals, Research purposes etc.
In addition to manufacturing medicines used in the treatment of general diseases, the Pharmacy also prepares special medicines required for research purposes of Ph.D. and PG scholars. Such medicines are prepared in the presence of the concerned research scholars so as to make them fully aware of its ingredients, the method and the process of preparation.
The Institute Library presently has about 21,400 Books and 1676 bounded volumes of Journals. A total number of 110 Newspapers and Journals are subscribed for the benefit of students, research scholars and teachers.. There is a provision for Book Bank with collection of 4,613 books for the benefit of poor, meritorious and needy students. The Library has a separate collection of post-graduate theses submitted by post-graduate students of the Institute. Indexing of articles published in various important.
The Institute has an Audio and Video Library with Photo Copier, T.V., V.C.R. and a good collection of Video Medical Cassettes of varied subjects. In all the 14 teaching Departments, departmental libraries have also been established to keep pace with the day-to-day requirements of teaching staff and students. Facilities of reprography, Xerox etc. are also provided to scholars, students and teachers.
