The college was established by late Sri. B.S. Narayan, son of Dharma Prakasha Raja Karya Prasaktha Sri. B.M. Ailing 18-yr-old girl commits suicideBangalore: An 18-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her residence in DVB Road on Wednesday evening. Police have identified the deceased as Ranjitha, a first PUC student of BMS College on Bull Temple Road. Ranjitha took the extreme step when her parents were not at home.
Police said that according to preliminary investigation, they found that she allegedly committed suicide as she was disappointed at being ill for quite some time. Ranjitha's parents Prabhu and Sudha told police that they had gone to the market and found her hanging from the roof upon their return.
The police also did not find any suicide note at the spot. Police said that Ranjitha's parents were looking out for a bridegroom to marry her off. Deputy commissioner of police (south division) Sonia Narang said, "The girl allegedly committed suicide because she was suffering from severe stomach ache. Ranjitha was staying in a joint family along with her parents and four uncles and their families.
But none of them were at home at the time of the incident." The police said that the body will be shifted to KIMS hospital and the post-mortem will be carried out on Thursday. Basavanagudi police have registered a case of unnatural death.

'B.M.S College for Women' one of the pioneer institutions in South Bangalore was established in 1964 by 'B.M.S. Educational Trust' formed and registered in 1958. The same Trust also runs a few other higher educational institutions in the disciplines of Engineering and Law. The objectives of the 'B.M.S. College for Women' are to promote higher education among women, to achieve academic excellence, to develop logistic personality of its students, to promote innovative skills in research and development and to inculcate the spirit of patriotism, social service and national integration.
The college is a non-minority Grant-in-Aid institution in urban location covering a land area of 2.025 acres with very good infrastructure. It has a basement, ground and two floors with a total built up area of 9195 Sq. metres and is shared by the Junior College. The college is recognised by the UGC under 2f and 12B in 1974. It is affiliated to Bangalore University. It has student strength of 1693 during the year 2003-04. It offers five undergraduate programmes in the faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. It offers five combinations of subjects in Arts, seven in Science, one in Commerce apart from B.B.M. and B.C.A. under Self-financing mode. It has 39 permanent, 34 temporary and 22 part-time faculty. The number of technical and administrative non- teaching staff is 16. Among the teaching staff fifteen have M.Phil. Degree and ten hold Ph.D. Though Certificate/ Diploma courses are not offered, the college has short-term courses in Flower Arrangement, Photography, Terracotta, Vegetable Carving, Fabric Painting, Artificial flower making and Interior Decoration. The college follows annual scheme of examination in all the courses except BCA in which semester pattern is followed. The introduction of courses like BBM, BCA, elective subjects like Electronics, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Insurance etc is in consonance with the vision and goals of the institution. The unit cost of education is Rs. 11,828/-

The Peer Team visited the college on 27th & 28th February, 2004 and examined in detail the infrastructure facilities available in the college, curricular and co-curricular programmes and the various functioning of the institution. The Peer Team interacted with the Governing Body, the Principal, Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff, Students, Parents and Alumini and elicited their views as to the facilities and functioning of the institution. In addition, the Peer Team examined all the relevant records and paid visits to different departments, laboratories, Central Library, Health Centre, Hostels, Computer Centre, Canteen, NSS, NCC facilities etc. Based in the above exercise and the seven criteria identified by the NAAC, the assessment of the institution is as follows:
Section 2: Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion 1: Curricular Aspects
'BMS College for Women' is a women's college affiliated to Bangalore University. The College Emblem signifies that 'one who has faith attains knowledge'. Since it is an affiliated college all the constraints of the affiliating system are obvious. However, the institution has been able to resolve the problem to a certain extent by sincere attempts. The college offers flexibility in the programme options. Introduction of courses such as BBM, BCA, electives such as Microbiology, Electronics, Biotechnology and Computer Science is an evidence of sincere and serious attempts made by the college to face these constraints of the 'affiliation syndrome'. The college offers seven combinations in B.Sc., five in B.A. in addition to B.Com., BBM and BCA. programmes. Vocational Courses like Biotechnology in Science and Insurance in Arts are being offered after availing UGC's assistance for five years. The College offers language options of English, Kannada, Sanskrit and Hindi. Some of the teachers who have been associated with Boards of Studies of the University have been able to influence changes in curriculum and in the introduction of innovative courses. Classroom teaching is not confined to the four walls, but enhanced by the faculty through field visits to factories and research institutions, educational tours, project work, assignments, surveys, seminars, workshops etc. In teaching methodology, use of new technologies by the faculty such as OHPs, slides, maps, charts need mention. The visiting professional faculty give inputs for better exposure of students to innovative ideas.
Criterion 2: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
Admission to various courses of study are done in accordance with the guidelines of the University and the rules and policies of the State Government. Students are admitted on the basis of their academic record in the qualifying examination. The Admission Committee oversees that there is absolute transparency and credibility in the process. It is commendable that the college has been able to attract students from various countries like Mauritius, Rwanda, Malaysia, Tanzania, Fiji etc. and also received students from other States of the country. Initial guidance to choose the right combinations of courses is given to the students at the time of admission. There is no provision to assess the students' knowledge, aptitude and skills for a particular programme before admission. However, remedial/ bridge classes are conducted to help the academically weaker students. Advanced learners are given additional coaching and project work.
There are twenty teaching departments in the college. The syllabi are unitized and a time frame is set to complete the same. The Staff Councils of the various departments oversee the completion of syllabi and conduct of tests and examinations. Classroom teaching is supplemented by Field Visits, Seminars, Workshops, Assignments, Projects, Quiz, Exhibitions and Visits to research centres and factory. The faculty also make use of audio-visual equipment, T.V, OHP, Charts, Models, Map, Slides etc.
At the beginning of the year the students are informed about the tests/ examinations and evaluation methods. Transparency in the internal examination system is revealed by the fact that after evaluation the papers are given to the students for their review. However, the performance in them is not taken into account for awarding final grades to the students. The results of the final examinations in most of the subjects have been good. Structured Students' Feedback on teaching learning experience has been practiced and remedial measures have been taken.
The college has committed and qualified faculty. There are 39 permanent, 34 temporary and 22 part-time teachers. The number of working days is 289 and teaching days are as per UGC norms. The percentage of classes taught by full time faculty is 76 percent. There is an Attendance Committee to monitor the attendance of students and shortfall in attendance is displayed on the notice board and also communicated to the parents. The Principal and teachers take personal care to see that the students attend classes regularly.
Recruitment of the faculty is done through the Directorate of Collegiate Education as per the guidelines of the State Government and the University. There was no recruitment made to the aided courses during the past years as per the policy of the Government. However, in the past years the College as per the requirements recruited part-time teachers on the basis of performance in demonstration lectures and interview. The teachers are given ample opportunity for learning through participation in seminars. In the past three years the number of teachers who had attended National and International seminars are 32 and nine respectively. Seven teachers also acted as resource persons. In the past three years three faculty members obtained Ph.D. and two were awarded M.Phil. degree.
In order to improve the work efficiency of teachers the college conducted two TQM Programmes. The College also conducted a few Seminars.
Criterion 3: Research, Consultancy and Extension
The College is an undergraduate college without much scope for research activity. Participation of faculty in research is limited to their being deputed to do research under FIP. However, nine members of faculty are pursuing their Ph.D. programme and two are recognized guides of Bangalore University. One faculty member is working on a minor project of the U.G.C. with an outlay of Rs.38,000/-. Faculty of various departments like Chemistry, Mathematics, Kannada, Commerce, Sociology, Economics have published research articles and books. It is commendable that three students of Sociology have been able to write and publish books on current social issues, viz., child labour and women abuse.
The College does not have any formal consultancy mechanism. It is suggested that the College could devise a method of offering consultancy services in some areas of faculty expertise such as in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Electronics, Computer Science, etc.
The College offers various extension activities relating to community development, health & hygiene, environmental awareness, adult education and literacy, AIDS awareness, blood donation etc through its NSS unit. The NSS Unit is very active with 150 volunteers. It has adopted a nearby Nagadevanahalli village for their work. The unit has conducted various innovative campaigns in the adopted village like distribution of Free Medicines, Animal Health Camps, Child Labour Survey, Project of Medicinal Plant Biodiversity, etc. Transport facilities of the Engineering College are availed for extension activities and field visits. One NSS Volunteer attended National Integration Camp during the current year. The College also seeks participation of Governmental and Non-Governmental Organisations in addition to Lions Club, NIMHANS, Indian Red Cross Society, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology etc. in their extension activities.
The college has one NCC army wing with a cadet strength of 55. One cadet represented the State of Karnataka and Goa at the Republic Day Parade in 2004. Eight and twelve cadets have passed C and B Certificate examinations, respectively. Two cadets participated in the Mountaineering Expedition. NCC unit of the college was awarded Best Institution Award of Karnataka I Girls Battalion after six years.
Criterion 4: Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The College has a well-maintained Campus of 2.025 acres with 41 class rooms. Separate spacious laboratories exist for all the Science Departments. Well-maintained gardens and a Medicinal Plants garden are available on the campus. There are two separate laboratories for Computer Science with 30 computers with ISDN connectivity. This facility also acts as a central facility for students and staff. However, the laboratories and some of the classrooms are shared with the Junior College. On the ground floor apart from the Principal's office the Medical Counselling Centre, and a spacious office with Computer Room are situated. A lift is available in the building. Independent well-furnished staff rooms have been provided for all the Departments. The Departments of Botany and Zoology also have well-maintained Museums. The Laboratories have separate preparatory and storerooms. The College has a well-maintained Library along with a reading room and a spacious reference hall. The Library has an open access system and has a collection of 34,148 books that includes the collection for Junior College. Many departments are maintaining Departmental Libraries. A spacious hall is available for conducting Seminars/ Symposia and Meetings. In addition the college has an open-air theatre for conducting cultural and other programmes. A parking space is provided in the campus.
The Trustees are maintaining a separate Women's Hostel for Engineering College students, in which rooms are allotted to the students of this college. The hostel rooms are spacious and well maintained. The foreign students are accommodated in the International Hostel maintained by the Trust for its institutions. The hostel facilities are of international standard.
A separate Canteen, Consumer store, Telephone booth and a Book Shop are available inside the campus for the benefit of students. The canteen provides food at reasonable price and the Bookshop offers discounts on books and other stationery items. Separate rooms are available for NSS, NCC, Sports, Students' Union, Placement Cell, Students' Welfare Officer, Counselling Centre etc. in the college.
All the infrastructure is maintained by the Management and with Government funds. Maintenance of the computers is through Annual Maintenance Contract. The College has a playground of size 100 ft x 80 ft. Facilities to play Volley Ball, Throw Ball, Hand Ball, Ball-badminton are available in this ground. The Indoor Games like Chess, Carom, and Table Tennis are being played in the Physical Education Room. The students of the college use gymnasium and Sports ground of the nearby Engineering College, maintained by the same Trust.
Criterion 5: Student Support and Progression
The College publishes its updated prospectus every year that contains the rules of admission, courses offered, fee structure, details of scholarship, rules of discipline, attendance and examination. It also contains academic calendar.
The College provides necessary assistance to students for their progression. A commendable feature of this college is establishment of a formal Career Guidance and Placement Cell, which is helping the students in providing necessary information and guidance. The Placement Cell invites various Employers to the college and conducts campus interviews. In the past several students have got benefited of this service.
The College offers all the Central & State Government Scholarships, which include foreign students scholarships from ICCR and other agencies. In the last academic year 144 students of the college received financial aid from different agencies. As many as 450 students cleared GRE, TOFFEL & GMAT examinations during last three years. Many of the students have gone for higher studies in India and abroad. Many of its alumni occupy good positions in the society, which includes Scientists, Teachers, Fashion Designers, Musicians, Dancers, Cricketers and Athletes. Many of the alumni have also set up their own enterprises.
During the course of studies all the students get all kind of support from the Principal and teachers. The system is very congenial and conducive for bringing out of the hidden talents of the students. The college provides enough opportunities to the students in developing leadership qualities. The Counselling Cell is actively involved in helping the students to overcome academic and personal problems. The foreign students are being admitted as per the guidelines of Bangalore University and in collaboration with the International Cooperation Division of the Trust. Every assistance is provided to the foreign students.
The students of the college are encouraged to participate in various co curricular and cultural activities. The NSS and NCC units are very active and the students participate in various competitions and win prizes. The college provides all the sports and games facilities to the students. Some of the students have excelled in sports. In the last year nine students participated in national teams of ball badminton, volley ball, hand ball, Tackwonda, Football and Rock Climbing. The college Volley Ball team was declared Runners up in the All-India Inter Collegiate Volley Ball Tournament. One student won Silver Medal in the National Cross Country Championship in 2004 and is selected for the World event. One of the students was awarded Gold Medal for being adjudged as Best Sportswoman of Bangalore University for the year 2003. A commendable feature of the college is that it has eight NIS qualified coaches to train the students in various games and sports. The college also provides academic help to the students participating in various games by way of providing extra academic coaching.
The Health Centre, with two visiting lady doctors, is open during the lunch hours and provides treatment and counselling facilities. There is an annual health check up of all the students.
Criterion 6: Organization and Management
'B.M.S. Educational Trust' is the apex body headed by a retired judge of the Karnataka High Court in compliance with a decree of the High Court. The Management of the college is chaired by a former Vice-Chancellor. The Management is financially sound and responsive to the needs of the college. The Management maintains the infrastructure very well. Besides the regular audit of the Government of Karnataka there is an internal audit mechanism. There exists internal check and control in the college administration. There is a deficit in the budget, which is met by the Management. The college has formed various committees for smooth functioning of the college. There is a special committee responsible for preparation of academic calendar. The fee structure is very reasonable which helps the students from average and middle-income group families to get education in the college.
The non-teaching staff is given opportunities to participate in training programmes conducted by various government agencies. The college provides support in the form of Festival Advance and Children Education Loan to non-teaching staff and helps procuring various kinds of loans to all the staff members through commercial banks.

Section 3: Overall Analysis
'B.M.S. College for Women' is an urban college located in a Basavanagudi, South Bangalore, Karnataka. It offers five Undergraduate Programmes in Arts Science & Commerce. It offers five combinations of subjects in Arts seven in Science apart from B.B.M. and B.C.A.
The College functions in a very democratic and transparent set-up with a faculty strength of 95. It has student strength of 1693. The classroom, laboratory and central library are shared by the Junior College also. However, there are a few Laboratory and classrooms exclusively meant for Junior College.
The College has a uniform record of high percentage of pass and many departments have produced university rank holders. The students have focussed plans for their future and of their academic pursuit.
They are engaged in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as NSS, NCC, Sports and have brought many laurels for the College. Financial assistance and scholarships are available to the students not only from Central and State Governments but also from other agencies.

Existing Computer facilities may be improved by adding more PCs & Printers.
High speed internet connectivity may be made available to the staff and students.
In view of the huge infrastructure intercom facility may be provided.
Specific modules of computer courses may be administered for supporting staff, teaching staff and students.
Short-term Certificate Courses in computer applications in self-financing mode may be offered to benefit all students who do not have Computer Application as part of their curriculum.
A centralised 'Media' facility may be provided to the faculty to prepare audio-visual and other teaching aids.
Computerisation of the Library and total automation of the office may be taken up.
Students' attendance and progress can be computerised and made available to the Principal, Heads of Departments and Parents.
A Research Committee may be set up and research culture may be encouraged among the entire faculty.
Alumni Association may be registered. The Alumni Association and the Parent-Teacher Association may be involved in all developmental activities of the college.
Gymnasium may be added to the existing sports facilities. Funds available with MHRD and Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India may be tapped.
English language laboratory may be set up to train students in language and communication skills.
Exclusive coaching centre may be started to train students to appear for various State, Multi-national and Union competitive examinations.
P.G. Courses in Commerce, Management, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemistry and Applied Psychology may be started.
All Departments may utilise the financial assistance available with UGC for FIP and Minor/ Major Research Projects.
More linkages may be established with Industries and Corporate Bodies to facilitate the students to have practical exposure and training.
Group Insurance Scheme for students may be implemented.
The college may start more Certificate/Diploma Courses as value addition to run concurrently. The suggested courses are Journalism & Mass Communication, International Air Ticketing and Reservation, Bio-informatics, Event Management, Front Office Management, Laboratory Technology, Banking Technology, Health Care Management, Cosmetology, Life Skills, Web Media, Web Designing, Repair of Home Appliances, Investment Banking & Finance Services, Textile Designing, Fashion Technology, Home Budgeting etc.
