HRD Minister confirms AND College violated norms

The Minister of State for Human Resource Development Dr D Purandeswari while replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Friday confirmed that specimen of endangered animals was found in the Zoology Department lab of Acharya Narendra Dev College of Delhi University.

On February 18 the matter was reported, when a team of animal rights activist from NGO People for Animals (PFA) along with Delhi Police officials had conducted a raid in the college and had recovered eight live frogs and specimens of cobra from the lab.

The college principal Dr Savithri Singh had then criticised the way in which the animal rights group just pushed their way into the college. She had then alleged that the activists from PFA just barged their way into the college without any prior permission. Later on that day an FIR against the college had been filed in the police under Sections 9, 12, 39, 44, 49b, 50 and 51 of Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972 for using endangered species of animals for conducting laboratory experiments.

With the question being raised in the Upper House of the Parliament on Friday, made it crystal clear that the college was in possession of specimens of endangered species. Replying to the question raised by Smriti Irani of the BJP, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development confirmed that Delhi Police along with wildlife officials and activists from PFA had seized specimen of 16 preserved animals and 8 live frogs from the college laboratory. Replying to the notice the minister further stated that the Delhi University has received guidelines from, the Ministry of Environment and Forest and has circulated it to all its colleges prohibiting the use of species listed that the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. In the reply to the question the MoS also confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against the college, which was earlier being denied by the college.
