Profile of Badruka College of Commerce and ArtsEstablished in the year 1950, with Intermediate Course with two sections, Badruka college of Commerce and Arts was upgraded to Degree College. The Evening college was opened after a few years. The college introduced B.Com (Computers) in the year 1998-99 and B.Com (Hon) in 2005-06. The college has been rated 8th among the top ten colleges in the Country and first in the State of Andhra Pradesh by India Today survey. The college has been in the forefront of commerce education and has been bagging the top university ranks.

MBA student commits suicideAn MBA student committed suicide by hanging himself at Saroornagar on Wednesday night.
The deceased, P. Govardhan, 24, from Rajahmundry was pursuing his second year MBA from Badruka College at Kacheguda. He was staying with his brother in a rented house at Madhurapuri.
Two days back his brother went to Rajahmundry and on Wednesday night Govardhan killed himself by using the bedsheet.
The suicide was detected when the door of his room was broken open.
The reason for his suicide is yet to be ascertained.
NAAC report of Badruka College of Commerce and ArtsSection 1 : Preface
Badruka College of Commerce and Arts, Kachiguda, Hyderabad 500 027 volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and submitted the self-study report on 9th October, 2001. The Peer Team comprising of Prof R. P. Kaushik (JNU) former member University Grants Commission, as Chairman, Prof. Indhrani Sridharan, Principal and Secretary, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai, as member and the work of the Peer Team was coordinated by Dr M.S. Shyamasundar, Assistant Adviser on behalf of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The Peer Team visited the college on 16th and 17th January 2002.
The Peer Team studied and analysed the Self-Study Report submitted by the college. During the visit the team went through all the relevant documents , visited the Departments and facilities and interacted with the various constituents of the college. The visit enabled the team to have a good overview of the academic, co-curricular, extra curricular, sports and extension facilities of the college. The team interacted with the Hon. Secretary and Correspondent, the Principal, Governing Council Members, faculty, students and alumni of the college. Based on the above exercise and keeping in mind the seven criteria identified by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the Peer Team was able to appreciate the quality of education offered by the college. The assessment of the college under the various NAAC criteria, its strengths as well as suggestions for further improvement are presented in the following sections.
Introduction: Badruka College of Commerce, Kachiguda, Hyderabad was established by late Raja Bankatlal Badrukaji and Shri Pannalal Pitti in the year 1950. The Institution was affiliated to Osmania University as a non-autonomous institution in the same year with a provision of grant-in-aid support from the State Government. The college with an exclusive focus on commerce has been a non-minority institution and has continued to be the first unique institution of its kind to steer courses on Commerce, Economics and Languages viz. English, Telugu, Hindi and Sanskrit. It is run by Seth Ghasiram Gopikishan Badruka Educational Society, which was registered in 1966 replacing the status of a 'Trust Fund' that was managing the college earlier to 1966.
The management of the college has set up other institutions such as Badruka College Postgraduate Centre (1984), Bankatlal Badruka College for Information Technology (1990), Badruka Institute of Professional Studies (1992), Badruka Junior College for Girls (1994), Laxmi Nivas Badruka Vidyarthi Gruh (Hostel) (1996), Ramdayal Ghasiram Badruka Technical Institute (1996), Badruka institute of Research & Consultancy (1994), Badruka Institute of Foreign Education (2000), Badruka institute of Foreign Trade (2001) and Bansilal Badruka institute of Music and Dance (2001).
The constitution of the Society has been broad-based and has within its purview a comprehensive administrative structure in order to have decentralization and academic freedom among its academic components. The land mass of the college is 5761 sq. yds. A 5-storeyed building with provision for parking and a small playground having indoor game facilities is located in the heart of the city of Hyderabad. Total built up area is approximately 90 sq. ft.
The college has celebrated its Golden Jubilee on 2nd August 2000. It has enjoyed the prestige and pride as a single faculty undergraduate college with major programmes in the discipline of Commerce, Economics and languages. The total number of faculty members is 42, out of which there are 20 permanent and 22 full-time faculty members along with 23 non-teaching staff members. The student strength of the college is 1782 out of which 413 are women students and 1369 men. As an affiliated institution to the Osmania University, the college has been following a non-semester annual University Examination System. The total number of working days are 180.
The objectives and mission of the Institution appear 'to foster an intellectual and cultural environment in which the spirit and skill of the creative individual will thrive and research flourish and the artistic, educational and business needs at the national and international community be secured'.

Section 2: Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion I: Curricular Activities
The college has been following the syllabi, courses, designs and other related matters as prescribed by Osmania University which has been the stipulated position followed by all the affiliated institutions of Osmania University. It has been offering a variety of updated new courses at undergraduate level in Commerce with additional academic components of Economics and Languages. In its revised version, the Commerce Department has merged the major Economics programmes within its own ambit. Departmental meetings and Staff Review Committees make periodic reviews of their teaching programmes and adjust them accordingly.
The Institution furnishes courses in B.Com (Regular) English Medium, B. Com. (Regular) Telugu Medium, B.Com (Vocational) Advertising & Sales Promotion English Medium and B.Com (Computers) English Medium.
Admissions in the institution are done on merit as per guidelines of the State Government and the Osmania University. Admission tests are conducted and followed by interviews of the candidates for final selection to different programmes. The institution possesses its uniqueness in being a Single Faculty College and has attracted the student community from all parts of its state as well as from outside. The popularity of their programme is widely shared in their perception by the academic community.
The faculty is extremely well equipped with their M.Phil, PhD degrees and have had a meritorious background of their academic credentials.
Criterion II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
The admission of students to the college is in accordance with the guidelines of the Osmania University, based on merit and aptitude as stated earlier. The annual academic planning made at the commencement of each academic year by the College which includes student intake, as well as course designs, are done in a systematic manner. The preparation of teaching programmes is rigorously followed by maintaining teaching diaries, departmental meetings and reviews of the work done by the faculty.
Use of teaching aids are applied through OHP, video cassettes and LCD. Conventional teaching methods are also supplemented by emulating new techniques in classroom lectures, The students are instructed to follow a regular attendance schedule of the college The faculty members monitor regularly the work of students and take special care in conducting periodic tests so as to generate a healthy academic atmosphere in the institution. Practice of self-appraisal by teachers and their participation in Seminars as well as Refresher Courses has been a good feature..
The teachers adopt a number of teaching methods apart from 'chalk and talk' method i.e.. Slip Test, Surprise Test, Questioning and Review of the work done earlier. The Co-curricular and extra curricular activities are encouraged by the college. The Academic Coordinator and Admission Coordinator are appointed by the college each year with a view to have a systematic academic planning and participation by the major components of the institution.

Criterion III : Research, Consultancy and Extension
The teaching faculty consists of 43 teachers - 21 permanent and 22 full-time appointees out of which 9 are PhD holders and 14 have done their M. Phil degrees. The extension activities of the college are wide ranging having linkages with governmental and non-governmental organizations. The NCC unit of the college has an authorized strength of 137 with distinction in Republic Day Medal, Inter University Medals and participation in Trekking and Basic Leadership Camp, and have lent themselves to service such as Flood Relief. The NSS with two units of 100 each have to their credit participation in Pulse Polio, Blood Donation, Clean and Green Programme, adoption of rural as well as urban slums. The Janmabhoomi programme is also steered by the NSS of the college.
Since it has been an undergraduate college, research activities have been concentrated only at the Faculty level. There are no research programmes followed in the college at undergraduate level. However, the Faculty has been involved in supervising PhD and M.Phil programmes of students at Osmania University. The MBA projects and other Governmental Projects are also supervised by the Faculty members. The faculty members have, to their credit, publication of 40 books that includes textbooks in English and textbooks in Telugu. They have also published 28 articles in Journals and National Magazines. The members who are holding ad hoc appointments are in an uneasy position for want of concrete schedule for their absorption as permanent teachers in this institution. The difference between the remuneration of permanent and non-permanent members provides a glaring gap which requires attention on the part of the Management of the institution.
Criterion IV : Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The Institution is situated in an urban area, Kachiguda, with 5761 sq. yds. The College has 22 classrooms, 2 staff rooms, one computer lab with 32 Compaq 3 systems, UPS and printer. The College proposes to meet the academic growth with need-based planning and maintains the premises in good condition with an eye for cleanliness and greenery. There is a Central Library with nearly 38,000 books, 38 journals and 13 newspapers. The College has a Central Computer Lab with 32 systems working for 10 hours a day. The College conducts voluntary medical check-up. It has a sports centre for conducting indoor games and the University grounds for outdoor games. Students are encouraged with Medals and Prizes. There is hostel facility for upcountry students with limited bed strength of 45. The Group Insurance Scheme for students is also followed.
However, it has been felt by the Peer Team that there should be Computerization of Library with Internet facilities and interlinking it with other sister institutions. Facilities in the Auditorium should be improved to cater to the requirements of the students. The beginning of a hostel for boys is a welcome feature but the same could be extended to the girl students who appear to be in large number here. Sports ground for regular practice by students may be considered.
Criterion V: Student Support and Progression
The academic performance of the College is good. With 50% taking to Employment and the other half moving for Post Graduation. The College has its alumni placed in prominent positions. A small percentage also take to other professional and entrance examination like GATE, GRE, TOEFL, GMAT, NET, etc. The College Prospectus is updated annually which provides the historical background of the College with Rank List, availability of scholarships and other auxiliary facilities. The Placement Cell has a Placement Officer and provides career counselling to the students. The College Alumni Association with distinguished members from all walks of life like Central and State Ministers, Auditors, Advocates, etc. have been meeting regularly Their interaction with their Alma Mater is fairly good.
The Biodata System wherein the class teacher is in close contact with his students is an encouraging feature of the academic programme. The presence of Student Welfare Officer for both boys and girls is another important aspect in sustaining the wellbeing of the student community in the college.
Criterion VI : Organization & Management
The organizational structure of the management is quite good and works in a committed manner. There is an efficient internal coordinating mechanism monitored through the Principal and Management. The office with the secretarial assistance with the Secretary & Correspondent representing the Society helps in the day-to-day work. All decisions are made through governing body and its various committees. The main source of income is fees and Grants-in-Aid from the Government.
Besides these two sources the Institution and the Management have not evolved a network of self-financing and resource generating courses and programmes. While they have set up several separate entities, independent of this institution, which caters to their remunerative needs, this college has remained denuded of such resources. The usual argument of the Management is that there are built-in constraints due to overall limitations imposed by State Government and University in starting new courses and designing new programmes.
Criterion VII: Healthy Practices
The college has a very good reputation for its academic commitment and devotes special attention towards moulding its students as responsible citizens.
The College has an eye for latest managerial concepts and computerization programmes.
It also carries out extra curricular activities, viz. inter collegiate debates, dance and music competitions, and essay writing. This institution offers ample opportunities for the development of talents among the student community.
The calendar of activities for the academic year is prepared in advance and meticulously carried out.
The College also inculcates the community orientation and civic sense through extension activities such as Adult Education, AIDS, Health & Environment Awareness and Blood Donation.
There is a faculty member for Indian heritage and culture to impart value education and is built into the regular curriculum (2 hours/week).
The Institution also provides for co-curricular activities such as Workshops, Seminars, Conferences and Refresher Courses. Extension services such as Community Development, Blood Donation Camps, AIDS Awareness, Adult Education and Literacy, Medical Camps, etc. are also available from time to time.
In the area of Support Services the following infrastructural facilities are available namely, Auditorium, Central Library, Audio Visual Centre and Computer Lab.
The College offers a variety of scholarships to its students, which are provided by the Society as well as the State Government.
The NSS and NCC activities of the college have been encouraging.
In sports and games the students of the college have made significant awards and prizes.
Section 3. Overall Analysis
The Peer Team at the conclusion of its visit of the College expresses its appreciation of the academic work carried out by the Institution as well as the various facilities provided by the Management towards its functioning. The College has made significant mark on the society of Andhra Pradesh through its educational services with accent on quality and value for the past 50 years.

The dedication and togetherness of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college amply encouraged by the authorities, have contributed towards the success of this institution.
The college has steered several academic programmes in the field of commerce which has left a significant mark on the ex-student as well as the public at large
Gains of this institution comprehend in several areas namely, Auditing Services, CA programmes, Banking sector, expertise in Commercial Corporate world, Transnational Organizations and even Middle Ranging Service Sector of Andhra State.
The students of this institution show a significant sense of sincerity and dynamism which is a very healthy sign for the growth of an institution. College has remained by and large a solid base in traditional and non-traditional commerce courses as have been pursued in the country till now.
It is a pity that its expansion is not taking place in terms of other related areas, such as, information technology, business management and comprehensive postgraduate course components having new techniques and designs. However, they have brought out these course designs in other sister institutions.
The management could pay more attention in expanding these programmes related to the base institution i.e. the Badruka College of Commerce rather than diversifying its new postgraduate programmes as exclusively separate entities.
Hostel facilities as well as playgrounds which are an essential part of an educational institution need to be attended to at the earliest.
The space area for an institution wherein infrastructural facilities could grow more dramatically is possible if the institution acquires more land available to it in the vicinity of the city.
The college needs to develop its library facilities - computerization, internet access and collaboration with other libraries within the city.
There could also be a consortium of this institution with other corporate sectors providing a meaningful network and linkages for employment purposes.
The Peers Team strongly recommends to the Statement Government as well as the Osmania University along with other authorities that be to rectify the widely prevalent phenomenon of temporary/ad hoc/part-time teachers as this has created a sense of dismay among the teachers. Appropriate measures in this direction should be taken at the earliest..
The discussions with the Management and the Governing Council of the institution makes the Peer Team believe to suggest that a concrete illustrative vision could evolve in the near future.
While the institution has been enjoying a good deal of trust amongst its alumni and different sectors of business world, it needs to show new directions towards its future growth.
